  • 122: Military Veterans on So-Called "Militias"

Armed extremists in so-called “militia” groups (from the organized Three Percenters to the more decentralized Boogaloo Bois movement) have gained increasing media attention in 2021, as they used firearms as tools of intimidation and violence in events across the US. And who better to comment on those who participate in these militias than those who served in the US military? As such, Brady is joined by a panel of veterans to comment on: what it’s like to see weapons of war in US streets and government buildings; the militarization of civilians; how they feel about the rise of veterans in these so-called “militias”; and what those concerned about the rise of “militia” groups can do to push back. To cover all this and more, hosts Kelly and JJ are joined by veterans Timothy "TJ" Ryan, Dr. Kyleanne Hunter, and Congressman Jason Crow.

    Mentioned in this podcast:
Letter from Jason Crow and Robin Kelly on weapons of war (Jason Crow)
We Are Not Done Yet (HBO)
Addressing the threats of armed militias and white vigilantism in America (Brady)
The 2nd amendment and public safety after Heller (Brady)

  • 120: Fighting for Expanded Brady Background Checks

On March 11th, the US House of Representatives passed H.R. 8 and H.R. 1446, two bills designed to expand and strengthen Brady Background Checks. H.R. 8 specifically addresses the selling and transferring of firearms and private sales, whereas H.R. 1446 provides the background check system with additional time to make a final determination on a potential firearms purchaser before a licensed dealer can transfer a gun, addressing the often-called “Charleston loophole.” To discuss how these bills came to be, and where they'll go from here, hosts Kelly and JJ are joined by: Brady President, Kris Brown; survivor and activist, Colin Goddard; Vice President of Policy at Brady,  Christian Heyne; and Team Enough Executive Council member and national chapter coordinator, Stephan Abrams.

    Mentioned in this podcast:

  • 119: The Importance of Art-tism in the Fight for Gun Violence Prevention

As gun violence has risen across the US, so too has art dedicated to ending gun violence. In this space are art-activists, who combine the creative power of artistic expression (be it dance, music, theater, painting, etc.) with the strategic planning of activism that is necessary to spark, and then shepherd, social change. Today, hosts Kelly and JJ are joined by two art-activists that detail just how important that intersection of art and activism is:  Farooq Al- Said and Jason Sole. Farooq is the Director of Operations and an emcee at 1HOOD; Jason is an abolitionist and the co-founder of the Humanize My Hoodie Movement.  And more than that, both men are tireless advocates nationally and in their communities for racial justice, the rights of marginalized communities, and to end violence.

Together, all four of us discuss everything from performative allyship to code switching, to police violence being gun violence to restorative justice, to the role of art in revolutionary spaces and the risk of white supremacy.

    Mentioned in this podcast:
Why the NRA Stands Up for Some Black Gun Owners, But Not Others (the Trace)
This Week In White Supremacy: the  Clear and Present Danger of The Capitol Riots (1Hood)

  • 118: Why Survivors Must Lead in Gun Violence Prevention

What roles should survivors play in gun violence prevention? What is it like to fight for justice, when justice has been denied to you? To find out, hosts Kelly and JJ are joined by Mattie Scott and Suzanne Kelley. Mattie and Suzanne both lost multiple family members to firearm homicide, and the murders that got them involved remain unsolved years later. Nevertheless, both of these women have worked tirelessly for gun violence prevention for years. No person should have to experience what Mattie and Suzanne have, and both of them continue to work to make sure that in the future, no one will.

  • 117: 3 Years After Parkland -- "Once You Hear a Witness, You Become a Witness"

Three years ago, on February 14th 2018,  a gunman armed with an AR-15 attacked Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 14 children and three staff members. In the aftermath, survivors of that shooting have stood up for gun violence prevention, fighting daily for common-sense gun violence prevention laws. But what is it like for those survivors? What do they wish all people knew about the daily struggles of these survivors-turned-activists? And, what can we all be doing better to support them?

To find out, hosts Kelly and JJ are joined by Ivy Schamis and Aalayah Eastmond, survivors from class 1214. Ivy was an almost 20-year veteran social studies teacher, and Aalayah was her junior student. Today, Ivy has relocated to DC where she works in school administration, and Aalayah is an executive council member of Team Enough, co-founder of Concerned Citizens D.C., an intern with PayOurInterns, and a full time college student at Trinity Washington University.  Join them, and learn about the person behind that title of "survivor."

  • 116: Everything You Wanted to Know About Guns at a Pawn Shop, But Were Afraid to Ask

Wholesalers, big box retail chains, and local gun shops conduct the overwhelming majority of firearm sales in the U.S. each year, but collectors and enthusiasts know that wandering from this beaten path has its rewards. In cities and towns across the country, merchants of a more eclectic bent work the fringes of the firearms business, buying and selling everything from today's most modern handguns and rifles to the breech-loading Civil War rifles and Wild West six shooters of American myth and history. But how does the buying, selling, and pawning of guns actually work?

In today's episode, hosts Kelly and JJ  talk with Davron Harris of Max Pawn Las Vegas, a firearms expert and aficionado from Las Vegas, Nevada who also, it just so happens, is a seasoned vet of the pawn shop trade. Just how do dealers, collectors, and enthusiasts buy, sell, and trade firearms when pawning is involved? How do pawnbrokers handle first-time gun owners who might know nothing of safe storage? What other roles do these hands-on historians and purveyors of the world's arcana play every time they come into work?

    Mentioned in this podcast:
Tips on Firearm Safety During Self-Isolation (Max Pawn)
Tools to Help End Family Fire in Your Community (Brady)
Ending Family Fire During Coronavirus (Brady)

  • 115: The Danger of Hoaxers and "Alternate Truths": Rep. Greene, Alex Jones, and More

So-called "gun truthers" — hoaxers — believe that mass killings such as the one at Sandy Hook are government-run plots designed to gin up support for restrictive gun laws, among other things. Some of these individuals even believe such massacres to be entirely fictitious productions in which no one involved is hurt, let alone killed; actors, they will tell you, masquerade as the victims, friends, and grieving kin the country sees in the news.

This behavior is not only reprehensible, but somehow — in defiance of all reason — increasingly common as well. More and more, the families of gun violence victims, already reeling from a loss no one should ever know, are subjected to the rants and tirades of the far right's cynical fringe in both the media and the streets of their home towns. Today, Fred Guttenberg and Andy Parker, two fathers who, after losing their beloved daughters Jaime and Alison to gun violence, have been repeatedly attacked by these so-called “truthers,” join hosts Kelly and JJ , and Brady President Kris Brown to discuss what the normalization of such misconduct means to them — and to our troubled country.

  • 114: How To Be (Safely) Raised Hunting

How do you teach a child about gun safety? About hunting? And how young is too young? In today's episode, you'll find out. Hosts Kelly and JJ are joined by David and Karin Holder of Raised Hunting, Raised At Full Draw, and Raised Outdoors. Together, they run Raised Hunting, a television show all about how American families can use hunting as a platform to teach ethics and values to their family. They also are devoted to teaching adults and children about archery, hunting, and outdoor education in a way that is safe and sustainable. With Kelly and JJ, the Holders discuss how adults can safely introduce children to storing, handling, and hunting with firearms -- and the quiet but tremendous role that hunters and hunting traditions can play both in reducing gun violence and bolstering the ethical foundations of people young and old.

  • 113: Do Guns Make Us Free?

Gun rights groups, headed by the National Rifle Association, have argued since the early 1990s that the spread of firearms is essential to maintaining freedom in America, making  a very wide interpretation of the Second Amendment necessary to protect all other rights . But is this argument true?  Do guns indeed make us free? To find out,  hosts Kelly and JJ are joined by Brady President Kris Brown and political philosopher Dr. Firmin DeBrabander. Together, they discuss the myth that guns equal freedom from tyranny,  the role the NRA has (and continues to play) in sharing that rhetoric, and how myth is being played out in current legislation, like Stand Your Ground laws.
