Real Hope
1 Peter 1:1-12

1 Peter is a letter to the believers who had been dispersed, sent throughout the ancient world and who were under intense persecution. Peter knew what it took to endure without bitterness, without losing hope. He understood first hand what it looked like to have big faith in a big God.

• For it to be hope, it has to come from Jesus.
  • There are two components to this living hope: right-now hope and future/forever hope.
• We all want gold, but trials are more valuable.
  • Learning that lesson, to depend more on God or whatever the result of the trial is… that genuineness is more precious than gold.

Praise through the trial and through the pain, knowing that Jesus is your Living Hope!

Celebration brings joy into life, and joy makes us strong. With that strength we endure certain trials, knowing that better days are ahead. As Christians, we always have hope in Christ!
Every discipline should bring joy, excitement, and a sense of thanksgiving. And making celebration a regular occurrence, we systematize remembrance. We set up times where we stop, look up, and celebrate/enjoy

There’s something we can only know about God in stillness. Sitting still before God reminds us that He’s God, and that He’s with us. There is a perspective on life that we can only get as we sit still before God to remember and receive.
Being still and knowing He’s God has a life-changing effect. We reject the world’s message of a sovereign self and give our lives anew to our Sovereign God.

How to practice stillness in God: 5-10 minutes per day of patient, open-ended yieldedness, centering yourself on God

What is the Bible?

• It is God’s Word. Its purpose is to reveal God to us. It is God’s self-revelation to humanity. The Bible also tells us who we are.

4 reasons why committed Christians don’t read the Bible:

1. Is the Bible actually perfect?
2. Does the Bible have authority in my life?
3. It’s complicated, and we give up. 
4. “I don’t have time.”

How to Enjoy God through reading the Bible every day:

• Make a habit reading the Bible 20 minutes a day for the rest of my life
• Increase your Bible intake throughout the week:
  • Listen to the Bible
  • Memorize Bible verses
  • Find a Bible Buddy.

The Gospel
Galatians 4:1-7

In this message, we see that our relationship with Jesus is not about standing attention and reciting the right words, but that this is a relationship with a loving Dad who wants us to know Him and wants to be known by us.
The modern view of freedom is that you’re free from everyone and everything and can do what you want. But Jesus wants to set you free for something, to live according to the purpose that God created for you. True freedom isn’t independence of self, but dependence on God.

• We were slaves to sin.
• The Father sent the Son to redeem and adopt us.
• Our relationship with God is close and personal.

Jesus shattered the social structures of His day by dining with those who had no business dining with Him. Kindness and goodness expressed in the form of hospitality, surrounding our family table with strangers and the unlikeliest of guests, has the power to redefine belonging in a divisive world.
Jesus challenges you to take His mission home… He sets up your house, your apartment, your dorm room as an embassy of the kingdom.

• Christian hospitality is about those who have no business being there, being there.
• Zacchaeus started the day with a full bank account and an empty life, but he ended the day with a full life and an empty bank account.

Jesus was calling this young man toward a kind of faith that relinquishes this life in exchange for eternal life. Jesus displaces the treasures of this world so that He alone will be adored, trusted, and obeyed. He does this because He loves us. Because what He’s offering and life with Him is infinitely better and freer!

To inherit eternal life:

• I must be clear on who Jesus is.
• I must lay down the things of this world so that I can have Jesus.
• I must submit to Jesus.

Pharisee and Tax Collector
Luke 18:9-14

In this parable, Jesus is getting to this implicit question: who is really righteous in God’s sight? Who is truly part of His kingdom?
Meaning and purpose come only when God is in the center of our lives, not ourselves.

• The Pharisee had an inflated sense of self and a deflated sense of God.
• The tax collector was justified because he humbled himself before God and had faith in God.

How to grow in spiritual humility:

• When you catch yourself judging someone, pray the tax collector’s prayer:  "God, be merciful to me, a sinner!"
• Preach the gospel to yourself every day.

The Parable of the Prodigal Son
Luke 15:11-32

In this passage there are two sons: one good, staying and obeying and one bad, leaving and disobeying. But they both disrespected the father. They both wanted the father things, and not the father's love.  
What the world offers is not greater than the Father’s heart and love.

• Choose the Father’s LOVE over THINGS.⁠
• The kiss came before the son’s confession.
  • No matter who you are, no matter what you did, if you come home God will accept you and love you. You do not have to earn it.
• Jesus is the true elder brother.
  • This younger son in the story gets a pharisee for an elder brother, as believers we do not!
