We talk a lot about blessing Fort Worth and making Fort Worth more like heaven. That by being good neighbors and working hard at our jobs and blessing schools and reaching into the community, Fort Worth becomes more like Jesus. And today, we’ll look at God’s heart for the nations. 

• God’s kingdom multiplies through local churches sending missionaries to the nations.
• Mission is far more about God and who He is than us or what we do.

In this text, Paul’s encouraging believers to live joyfully in such a way it makes a difference in the world. He wants us to shine like stars. Shine like stars by living with a surrendered heart & practicing self-discipline.

• Salvation is available not based on what we’ve done, but only based on what Jesus has already done for us.
• Work out what God has already worked in you.
• Focus on growing & developing your faith as you put it into practice.
• Complaining about the problems of the world doesn’t change anything, but living in contrast to it for the glory of Jesus can.

Paul wanted to preach the gospel in Rome & you would think being in prison would hinder it, but God’s plan continues to press ahead. God was blazing a trail for the gospel through the imperial guard. Not only was God converting soldiers to faith in Jesus, He was strengthening the faith of current believers to share the gospel.

• We might be surprised how God can use us to advance the gospel, even in the most unlikely of circumstances. 
• True joy is found in focusing on Jesus.
• Joy isn’t the satisfaction of getting our way, but instead joy is satisfaction that Jesus is enough & He is in control.
• Adversity is an avenue for the advancement of the gospel.

The Apostle Paul loved this church. We know that a church isn’t a building or meeting. A church is a people. He thanks them for a gift they sent, but this is way more than a thank-you letter. The Philippian Church is facing some brutal opponents, so he challenges them to advance the gospel bravely. For them to work together through hardship and to advance the gospel in a tough context, with joy.

Tabitha was an ordinary person who had an extraordinary impact, because she patterned her life after Jesus’ life.

 Two questions to think about and apply from Tabitha’s story:

• What would my one-sentence testimony be?
• Who would cry at my funeral?

Who are you serving today—like Tabitha served these widows? Look for opportunities to open your home, to step into someone’s life, to serve people!

Imagine a church that so lived out Jesus’ way that the city around them couldn’t help but want in on the action.  That’s who we want to be… A church for Fort Worth. A people so sure of what Jesus accomplished on the cross and by His resurrection that we have to tell our neighbors. A family, ready to be sent out as ambassadors on behalf of our good King.
Take the initiative. Take the risk. Move toward people. Bless people. Let’s be for the city.

Jesus is the reason for the season. Consider enjoying being a Christian this Christmas. Enjoying extra time off that God gives you. Enjoying the life and peace He’s offering you. Christmas is about giving...It’s about God the Father giving His Son to us and for us.

To have a Christian Christmas:

• Enjoy the Gift of Christmas… Jesus!
• Enjoy instead of impress.
• Be still and remember God.
• Share burdens instead of bearing them all by yourself.
