Reflections on Scripture • 07-10-23 - Monday of the 14th Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel
Matthew 9:18-26
While Jesus was speaking, an official came forward, knelt down before him, and said, ""My daughter has just died. But come, lay your hand on her, and she will live."" Jesus rose and followed him, and so did his disciples. A woman suffering hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the tassel on his cloak. She said to herself, ""If only I can touch his cloak, I shall be cured."" Jesus turned around and saw her, and said, ""Courage, daughter! Your faith has saved you."" And from that hour the woman was cured.
When Jesus arrived at the official's house and saw the flute players and the crowd who were making a commotion, he said, ""Go away! The girl is not dead but sleeping."" And they ridiculed him. When the crowd was put out, he came and took her by the hand, and the little girl arose. And news of this spread throughout all that land.
Reflection
he work of Jesus is to manifest the heart of the Father. And the heart of the Ministry of Jesus is so connected to healing, bringing life into the brokenness of humanity. What I love about this story is we see human beings asking and just longing, just hoping for something from God. And it's so clear in this passage that we can and will receive what we need.
It's not always what we think we need, but we will receive something that transforms us. I love the people in this story that were the ones that said, This is stupid. This is a this doesn't really happen. They ridiculed Him. They ridiculed the whole idea of God. Interested in all of our needs and being able to change something into life that was looking like death.
That's the good news that Jesus has spread throughout the world, that there is this life giving force that is always there to bring healing and strength.
Closing Prayer
Father, as we endure the things that are difficult for us. Give us the courage and the faith and the enthusiasm we need to have that we know that when we turn to you, always you will bring to us that which we need. And we ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
