April is Community College Appreciation Month. It's also the month that signifies 75 years of Black Hawk College. With that, Black Hawk College has announced a full month's worth of events to call attention to Community College education and to the 75th Anniversary of Black Hawk College. Dr Jeff Hawes joined WKEI on People to People on Wednesday to talk about how Black Hawk will be celebrating in April and plans for Black Hawk students to return to in-person classes this fall.

The City of Kewanee held its final budget meeting on Monday evening. Highlights coming out of the meeting were a discussion regarding what to do about Francis Park, the possibility of privatizing the City of Kewanee Sanitation and more talk of a potential sewer rate increase to tackle growing issues with the Waste Water treatment plant in Kewanee. That said, despite several discussion items that will be discussed at Council meetings, it appears that the new budget for the City of Kewanee is set and that Finance Director Randi Haley is being hailed on her organization for helping to get this done in a timely fashion.

There is a growing worry about a COVID-19 resurgence. With people getting vaccinated some are becoming complacent and that complacency is even bleeding into getting a vaccination. The more people who get vaccinated, the less chance that a resurgence could cause us to have to take steps back in our re-opening. Dr Robert Ayers from OSF Saint Luke Medical Center was our guest on WKEI's Tuned In program on Monday. Dr Ayers joined WKEI with the latest news regarding COVID-19. Dr Ayers talked about the latest COVID-19 vaccine numbers. Henry and Stark County residents 18 years and older can now register for the vaccine and the number of people getting their first dose is on the rise. This is good news but there is also concern about a COVID resurgence in many parts of the state as well. Bottom line, get vaccinated so we can get back to normal. Eddie Tolliver from the Kewanee Salvation army joined WKEI on People to People for a conversation about the return of the Salvation Army Summer Camp. Eddie tells WKEI that Summer Camp is back and kids 6 to 17 are eligible to attend. You can get an application at the Kewanee Salvation Army Store during regular business hours. The Kewanee Police are actively recruiting new Police Officers. Kewanee Police Chief Nick Welgat joined WKEI to discuss some of the innovations that have come to Police recruitment in 2021. The Kewanee Police Department is seeking officers with some background in in lawn enforcement and those interested in starting a brand new career. One of the newest innovations in Police recruiting is the signing bonus. Anyone who comes aboard as a Police Officer will receive a signing bonus.
