The Greatest Comeback is underway for area businesses as the gradual reopening of the state economy continues. Gary Bruce of Bruce Jewelers in downtown Princeton spoke with WZOE about how his store has been doing. He says business has been good. They followed state requirements and closed the store on March 21. They reopened for curbside pick up on May 1 and people were allowed back in the store on May 29. June 19th is a landmark day in American history. On this date, a northern General made his way to Texas, the final outpost of the Civil War and enforced the law set forth by the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the slaves. Since that day, June 19th has taken on the historic moniker of Juneteenth. But there is so much more meaning and history to this day. Henry County Board Chairman Marshall Jones joined our People to People program on Friday to talk about a federal grant that will provide support for Henry County businesses. This new revolving loan fund will be fully administered by Henry County and will offer low interest loans to Henry County businesses. Unlike the current revolving loan fund, Henry County will be the direct lender on this loan and not just the gap lender. The Henry County Board will issue a press release when applications for the new Federal revolving loan funds are being accepted.

While there are calls to 'Defund the Police' others are looking for a more tangible type of police reform. Former Police Officer Darron Spencer has been on the front line of this reform process for several years. Darron's initiative, called Humane Policing, is training approach that would replace what Darron calls the Warrior Mentality training that is currently popular among police departments nationwide, with a training platform that attempts to change the mindset of officers and the overall approach to serving and protecting.

Kewanee City Council Member Mike Komnick was our guest on Tuned In on Thursday on WKEI. The Kewanee City Council tabled the 2020-21 fiscal year budget until the next Kewanee City Council Meeting on Monday, June 29th, just prior to the start of the new fiscal year on July 1st. The reasons were some discrepancies in numbers from the Illinois Municipal League which revised their numbers after the Council had essentially agreed on a budget deal during a budget meeting. Those changes in the IML numbers meant changes to the Kewanee Budget and the Council wanted more time to process the changes. Mike Komnick explained the situation in our interview.
