In our tenth special episode, we defend our honor as movie remakers. Okay, so that might be a little strong, but we do talk about the fact that while movie remakes often get a bum rap (and often said bum rap is entirely deserved), that doesn’t mean that the entire genre should be disregarded. Here, in Part 1 of this discussion, we each give an example of a movie remake that worked, and an example of a movie remake that didn’t work. Best of all, for only the second time, we were all in the same room at the same time when this was recorded, including special guest contributor and good friend Kyle Hoff.

Goldfinger

In part two of our discussion of Goldfinger, we begin by sharing some truly excellent listener submitted re-casting suggestions, as well as which of our choices from part one were the big winners. Then we move on to discussing lots of elements of both the original movie, and how we think it could be remade today, including spy movie cliches (many of which come from the original movie), misogyny and sexism, playful vs. deadly serious tone, and what type of villain our remake should have. This is easily one of my favorite second half discussions yet!

Note: We recorded this episode before the amazing actor Christopher Lee passed away, so our referring to him as still being alive were right at the time, but sadly are not now. We would absolutely still want to see him as a Bond villain, or any role, really. You’ll be missed, Sir Lee.

GOOOOOOLDFINGER…WAHWAAAAAHWAAHHH. An iconic (if not a bit cliched) movie featuring an iconic actor in maybe the most iconic of roles – absolutely ripe for remaking, right? Well, we decided to go for it, at least, and had a blast doing so. Here we tackle recasting three major and five minor roles. Along the way we reveal our martini of choice, try (very poorly) to pronounce Gert Frobe’s name, muppets, and the Bond of Connery’s era vs the Bond of today (leaving plenty of room for discussion of that in part two, don’t you worry).
