This week we sit down with the force of nature that is Athena Pelton–photographer, artist, writer, whiskeyer, motorcycle rider, and badass do-it-aller. When Kate opened her mailbox a year ago to find that Athena had sent her a hand-lettered rendering of her Twitter bio (“Kindness or GTFO”), grateful sobbing ensued and a beautiful internet friendship was born. This is the first time Jenn and Kate get to meet Athena IRL, and it’s everything we always knew it would be. In this episode, we dive into all the ways life changes after you’re 30: you give fewer fucks, you figure out who you are, and you suddenly care way more about free parking. So many preach-hand-emoji moments here, y’all. Get ready to love Athena as much as we do.

HEY PARTY PEOPLE! This week we welcome the all-around amazing, fantastic Amanda Costello –  a content strategist, speaker, and tabletop gamer who loves higher-ed. One of our favorite things about Amanda is that she loves filling out forms because it’s like taking a test where she knows all the answers. Brillz. AND, Amanda also happens to be a new Mom to the little nugget, Wes. Hey hey, Team XOXOJK. We’re back and both went to see Beyoncé and are without proper words but we manage to round up a few for you. Kate took a much needed mini break to NYC for her birthday. She visited Blue Hill, Upright Citizens Brigade, Barney’s, Mario Badescu, and lots of amazing neighborhood brunch spots, which you can eat until 5PM in New York. So civilized! We round out the episode discussing how to welcome in positive energy and practicing empathy. Learning to do so makes all of the difference! Enjoy. You’re the best.

It’s been a big few weeks for music lovers. Minneapolis had to say goodbye to arguably its biggest cultural icon with Prince’s passing, and the regional grief is still thick and raw. But then there’s Queen Bey in that yellow dress, smashing up car windows, easing our pain and making us feel invincible. (We pretty much haven’t stopped listening to Lemonade since it dropped.) Jenn has thoughts on what it means to recognize when something isn’t “for you,” culturally speaking, and how you can go ahead and love it anyway, and Kate waxes rhapsodic on how Bey has harnessed her power, vulnerability and gusto to empower a whole generation of women. So, RIP Prince, and long live Lemonade. These are the chapters and cycles of grief and redemption. Middle fingers up.
