There’ve been rumors about Apple prototyping folding iPhones for almost a decade. I first heard about them around the time of the iPhone 4 or 4s. This week the idea of a folding iPhone is back in the news — and with more than a little controversy. So, what does a folding iPhone mean? How would it work? And why would Apple even make one? If not for #iPhone12, then any time thereafter? Three months ago, alongside the 2020 iPad Pro and cursor support for iPadOS, Apple announced the Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro. Two months ago, Apple began shipping it and early reviews were mostly positive. Mostly. For some it was… transformative, bringing them closer to the traditional computer and laptop experience they’ve always wanted from the iPad. For others, it just re-ignited the whole existential crises over what even is a laptop or computer. For me… well… SPONSOR: CuriosityStream Get a free month of both CuriosityStream and Nebula (my streaming platform) by going to https://curiositystream.com/reneritchie and using the code "reneritchie" when you sign up! I’m… really conflicted when it comes to the future of the iPad. See, part of me wants what everyone on Tech Twitter and Tech YouTube wants: For the iPad, especially the iPad Pro, to gain every feature still missing when compared to the Mac, so that real nerds can do their real work. But, the other part of me wants what Steve Jobs wanted: To keep the iPad as the iPad, the computer for the vast majority of people who, for decades, were underserved by traditional computers. I know it’s really easy to say what Apple or any company should do when you’re not the one in charge of shipping any of it, but that’s sort of the constraints I placed on myself for this video — Not just the rumors of what’s coming next for #iPadOS14 and #iPadPro, but where I think Apple should go next, for everyone, and in ways I think can be implemented in the near future. We just got hit by a rumor saying there’ll be a new iMac at WWDC 2020, Apple’s annual world wide developers conference, set to kick off online in just under 2 weeks. Now, while #WWDC is always software focused, there have also been some pretty big hardware announcements there as well, including the Mac Pro in 2019 and the iMac Pro in 2017. So, given all that, what is this next gen #iMac rumor and, more importantly, what does it all mean? SPONSOR: Brilliant Go to brilliant.org/reneritchie and sign up for free. WWDC 2020, Apple’s annual World Wide Developers Conference, is less than two weeks away. And that means our first look at iOS 14, Apple’s next-generation operating system for the iPhone, is also less than two weeks away. There have already been some reports about just what exactly we might see this year but I think, after the pain of iOS 13 last year, there are also a few things we need to see in #iOS14 year (and, yeah, iPadOS 14 for the iPad as well). And, I’m going to go through all of it. SPONSOR: Brilliant Go to brilliant.org/reneritchie and sign up for free. Back in 2017, Apple deleted Touch ID and replaced it with Face ID. They didn’t keep both. They didn’t add Face ID to Touch ID. They went to the brave new world of biometrics and burned the old one down behind them. But, the ashes had barely even settled before we started getting rumors of Touch ID’s return. It’s resurrection. Not just in the new iPhone SE, which some people loved precisely because it had Touch ID, but in the flagship iPhones as well. But, why would Apple kill it just to bring it back to life? And could they do it as soon as the #iPhone12? SPONSOR: Brilliant Go to brilliant.org/reneritchie and sign up for free. Roll-of-the-dice accurate Mac Otakara dropped some rumor bombs this week about a new 4th generation iPad Air. When you combine them with previous rumors from supply chain exfiltrator extraordinaire, Kuo Ming-Chi, and the sometimes lucid LOvetodream Twitter account over the last couple of months, it provides a compelling vision for what might that next gen iPad Air might be. That… or a tantalizing fantasy. SPONSOR: Skillshare The first 1000 of you who go to http://skl.sh/reneritchie will get 2 months of Skillshare Premium for free! It’s been three generations and almost as many years, and not only hasn’t the notch gone away, it hasn’t gotten any narrower or shallower. Not one bit. And some people, well, they still hate its breathing guts. If you’re one of them, throw a like down below and be counted. But, could the #iPhone12, the iPhone 13, any future iPhone really, do anything at all to lessen that pain? Out of the box, your iPhone tries to strike a balance between security and safety, privacy and convenience. If you have location on, especially for social apps and photos, they can be used to find you and others in case of emergency. But they can also be used to place you and others in situations of tyranny. Videos can help document and prosecute abusers but can also be used to identify and target people standing up to abuse. Online backup can save your data even if your iPhone is taken on damaged, but can also expose your data to extralegal seizure from servers. Notifications and biometrics can help you get things done faster but can also let others get to your things faster. If you’re at home, you probably want to to keep your iPhone set to maximum convenience. Also, if you’re a bad actor of any kind, leave it like that as well. Please and thank you. But, if you’re putting yourself in harms way, if you’re on the front lines as press or health care or to protect the rights, civil liberties, and simple dignity of your family, community, and country, then you should absolutely lock your iPhone down. Hard. In situations where you fear for your security, the best thing to do is get a second, burner phone and lock that down. An older iPhone or iPhone SE works great. If you have the time or money. Either way, here’s how to protect your data. In the extreme. Some of the rumors swirling around the next version of #watchOS7 this June or the next #AppleWatch6 this fall — or both! — concern mental health. So, I asked one of the smartest people I know, who also happens to be a licensed psychotherapist, Georgia Dow, to come on the channel and discuss them with us.
