  • iPhone 12 — Mega Anamorphic Zoom?!
Rumors are making the rounds that the iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 — one of the upcoming iPhones — will finally increase the megapixel count on the camera system to a number greater than 12. With 64 being the flavor of the week. Now, megapixels are all about quantity. They don’t always help, and can even hurt, image quality. There are also rumors of other improvements, even entirely new cameras. Here’s what they all are, how they’d all work, and why Apple may just be considering them. This… is #iPhone12 camera rumors explained! SPONSOR: New Store! New Merch! Order now and get a month of Nebula — FREE! • iPad mini 6 — Not Going Pro?
It may seem like the gap the original iPad mini filled so well has narrowed considerably over the years. I mean, when the mini first launched, the iPhone had just gone 4-inches. But, in short order, Apple went to 4.7 and 5.5-inch Plus displays. Now, 6.5 inches is the Max and, rumor has it, the iPhone 12 might just Max out at 6.7-inches. So, for iPad mini 6, Apple could do what the did with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and Thanos-snap off half the bezels, keeping the same screen size but making the overall casing size smaller and more portable. That matches up with Kuo’s March rumors, but it also seems to hit up against the ever-growing iPhones even harder. Sure, the iPad mini is different. The aspect ratio is different. Where modern iPhones are slightly wider than 2 by 1, the iPad is still 4 by 3. So, the pages of books and comics better fit the screen, side-by-side apps are useful in portrait, and the keyboard doesn’t blot out the screen in landscape. But, still, the market for that might be shrinking even faster than the bezels. Instead, Apple could do with the iPad mini 6 what they did with the 11-inch iPad Pro: Still Thanos-snap half the bezels, but do it by keeping the same casing size and increasing the screen size. That matches up with Kuo’s May rumors, even if it effectively makes the iPad mini not quite so mini any more. Now, there’s no word on whether or not the iPad mini will actually get the new iPad Pro design language. Apple can reduce the bezels either way, though obviously keeping Touch ID instead of moving to Face ID limits the amount of vertical bezel that can be removed. Unless Apple goes with a side button mounted or under-display Touch ID, but there’s no indication of that yet either. So, what options are there for iPad mini 6? SPONSOR: New Store! New Merch! • Apple Glasses — No Apps?!
Over the last couple of videos I’ve talked about why Apple would make Glasses, basically a face-mounted computational display — and what could actually get people like you and me to buy a pair. One thing I haven’t talked about yet, though, is the developer story… apps. When the original iPhone launched, it came with only the apps Apple had given it. Including the last-minute addition of YouTube. Henri Lamiraux’s software team had just finished a forced march, a marathon of sprints, to get version 1 ready to ship, only to have to turn around and start another for version 2, this time to get the frameworks ready for the SDK event and the App Store ready to launch. Umpteen millions of apps and billions of dollars later, it literally made apps as mainstream, as popular, as music and TV. So, it should have come as no surprise that when the original Apple Watch launched, it had not only the apps Apple had given it, but kinda… sorta… an App Store as well. Back then, on that first version, the App Store lived on the iPhone and so did the app logic. Only the interface and interaction layers were… projected… onto the Watch. All based on Apple’s pre-existing Extensibility frameworks. Now, thanks to Kevin Lynch and the Watch team's own forced marches, Apple got app logic onto the Watch in version 2 and brought the store on-device in version 5. Sure, it’s fair to say that, while there are some legit terrific Apple Watch apps, wrist-based apps in general just haven’t proven as popular or as critical to the Watch’s success as they were the phone’s. Subject for another video. Let me know in the comments if you want to see it. But, that same process, the process of projectables, could prove even more critical and more valuable for Apple’s next small thing. This… is the potential for Apple Glasses apps. • Apple Glasses — CONTROVERSY!
Get access to my first Nebula Original on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, for FREE, when you sign up at CuriosityStream.com/reneritchie After a few years and a steady stream of reports, noted supply-chain exfiltrator extraordinaire, Kuo Ming-Chi, updated his, saying he now expected Apple Glasses to launch sometime in 2022. At that point, the always ascending Jon Prosser of Front Page Tech retorted, saying he’d heard an announcement was planned for as early as this fall’s iPhone event, but may be postponed to next year. Also, that they’d be called Apple Glass and cost $500. Then he went on a plethora of live-streams and podcasts, from the GadgetCast to VypDrive to the CultCast, and added details like they’d have no built-in speakers, but would rely on AirPods, and that there may even be a limited edition version in the shape of Steve Jobs’ famously rounded frames. Think Harry Potter, kids. Which, of course, set an internet already primed by gold-watch, XDR stand, and Mac Pro outrage once again on fire. Bloomberg’s biz-prophet, Mark Gurman, who’s also been reporting on the Glasses for years, called the Steve Jobs frames in specific, and the rest of the stories in general, fiction. Noted code extractor, Steve Troughton-Smith, said he’d laugh at these rumors floating around if not for people taking them seriously. Max Weinbach of XDA Developers, who’s contributed some of his own reporting on live streams and the EverythingApplePro channel, seemed to be on the same page as Prosser. And Prosser, for his part, basically said wait, watch, and see what happens. Now, I personally try to never fall victim to any of the classic blunders. The most famous, of course, is never bet against a dread pirate when death is on the line. But, only slightly less well known, is never get involved in a rumor war on the internet. But none of these people are your dad, so no hashtag Jern or hashtag Gurm in the comments, people. Personally, as you know, the when of the release date and the what of the hardware aren’t even the parts that fascinate me most. Though the rumors and the reporters being so conflicted right now is, in and of itself, fascinating in terms of seeing how the small, loud, but important social part of the market responds to the idea of the product itself. Because, while I covered why Apple I think Apple is making glasses last week — make sure you hit subscribe so you don’t miss any of these videos — the bigger question I have right now isn’t why Apple would make them but… why would any of us buy them? • iPhone 12 — Why No USB-C?
Will the upcoming iPhone 12 finally, finally see Apple ditch the Lightning connector like it’s a headphone jack and go all-in on USB-C? Apple started switching the Mac over with the 12-inch MacBook in 2015. They only gave it one port but… but… that one port was glorious USB-C, the way nature and nerds intended. Then, the very next year, in 2016, Apple switched the entire MacBook Pro lineup to USB-C as well. The entire lineup. But left the iPhone on Lightning. And… how could they? How could they have the Mac and iPhone on different connectors? Who cares if it’d had been that way since the 30-pin Dock connector killed Firewire on the iPod in ought 3. We needed, nay… we demanded a better, brighter future. In 2017, the iPhone X came with an all new, all modern design, the perfect opportunity for an even more modern connector to go with it. But… no. In 2018, the iPad Pro switched to USB-C. So what if it was meant to be a laptop alternative, we wanted that same alternative for the iPhone as well. But… still no. Then, in 2019, the iPhone itself went Pro, blessED Pro, which, like the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro just had to mean USB-C Pro, no? Well, turns out, No. Still No… Biggest troll of the decade — no. So, now… now… on the eve of the iPhone 12 and potentially the next big redesign, dare we nerds hope, dare we nerds dream, that Apple will finally, finally ditch Lightning for USB-C? Well, it's complicated... This is #iPhone12 and USB-C! SPONSOR: Brilliant Go to brilliant.org/reneritchie and sign up for free. • iPhone 12 and Apple Glass — But Why?!
In 2014, Tim Cook introduced the big and bigger iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and followed them up with one more thing… the Apple Watch. In 2019, could Tim Cook announce a smaller and bigger iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro Max, and follow them up with one more thing… the Apple Glasses? Now, I’m not as interested in the what or when as I am the how and why. So, this is #iPhone12 and #AppleGlass — The Breakdown. SPONSOR: Brilliant Go to brilliant.org/reneritchie and sign up for free. • iPhone 12 Isn't Good Enough
I’ve seen a lot of discussion lately about the iPhone — or just phones in general — being quote-unquote “good enough”. That most of them already do most of the things most of the people need most of the time, and Apple, Samsung, Google, and everyone else should just chill out and stop updating them every year. iPhone 12? Who needs it. It’s exhausting. Enough already. But… is it? I mean really? Now, hear me out… Maybe the iPhone, even the hotly rumored upcoming iPhone 12, maybe all current and expected phones this year, are just scratching the surface of their potential. Of what they can be and what they should be doing for us. So, this… is why the iPhone 12 isn’t good enough yet. Nowhere nearly. • iPhone 12 'ProMotion XDR' Display — Explained!
There’s been a ton of chatter about the iPhone 12 lately. That’s thanks to the deluge rumors from the likes of Jon Prosser, Kuo Ming-Chi, Mark Gurman, Max Weinbach, and others. I’ve covered some of it before, so hit subscribe and check it out. But, this time, I want to focus on the iPhone 12 display. See, reports are saying that Apple is going all-in on OLED across the full range of iPhone 12 devices. No more LCD on the base model, OLED only the Pro. Also, that Apple is going 120Hz, or ProMotion, on the high end, which means that will become the exclusive, Pro-only feature. But, there’s also been a lot confusion about what those things are, what it all means, and how, precisely, it’s all going to work. So, let’s dive into it. This… is the #iPhone12 display. • The TRUTH About Switching from Android to iPhone in 2020
The era of switching from Android to iPhone is over… But is it though? Apple recently released a new iPhone SE that has all the power of an iPhone 11, a camera that can beat out the iPhone XR, Touch ID, and, yeah, a forehead and chin straight out of 2017, but at a price tag of just $399 in the U.S. And it prompted a lot of reaction. Even my pal, Jerry Hildenbrand of Android Central, in an article still making the industry rounds, wrote that the cheapest iPhone has a more powerful processor than the most expensive Android phone So, are people really happy with their choices and their ecosystems? Are they set in their ways and their current phones? Have they decided the grass never really gets any more green? Or, are there frustrations that come up, new features that get added, security scandals that blow up, and new phones at new, lower, price points that… change everything again? This… is switching from Android to iPhone in 2020.
