Resting On Pretty

Hi folks! Writing to you on February 29th, 2020, the day we recorded this! Leap years are so exciting. So much to look forward to, aside from, of course, something actively reshaping the global order, the wheels of history finally unstuck from the rut of technocracy by something like, dunno, just spitballing here, a massive worldwide pandemic. (EDIT: doing a final revision of these notes the week this episode is about to go up. Might just check the news and see that I’m right. But first, a big sip of my coffee...)

Anyway, this week, we had the help of the episode “The Runway Ahead” to see what all the models we met this cycle are up to. Over cocktails inspired by the cycle’s winner, we’ll get to see show favourite Jenascia work a shift at Hooter’s, Cassie teaches us all about Tik Tok, and later, Erin and Cassie make a firm pledge to draw a horse and a bicycle. It’s been a heck of a season, and we’re hard pressed to find a better way of capping it off than with the help of the extremely funny comedian and host of Cavern Of Secrets, Lauren Mitchell! Lauren joins us to watch “The Girl Who Is America’s Next Top Model” and wax quasi-philosophical on being sexy and also sad, body image, bad self-administered haircuts and asserting the inalienable right to determine one’s own underpants. We find out who wins Cycle 2 and also settle once and for all if men deserve flowers. I can’t remember where we landed on the issue but I will say that flowers would be a terrific way to thank a beleaguered producer after a day of editing and writing episode descriptions. Food for thought!

Folks, show of hands, who’s ready for this show to get real messy? This week, we watched “The Girl Who Cheated” and let me tell you, it sure wasn’t at Settlers Of Catan! We do have a good friend who would literally just steal resources while we were haggling over sheep, so it’s very much possible to do so. I digress. The models stay in a fancy villa, kiss some boys and do a nude shoot with each other that almost definitely awakened our latent bisexuality when this episode originally aired. Then, we pour a belated one out for fallen Canadian retail giant, Zellers. You had a good run. It’s time to rest.

You know, I can’t quite put my finger on why, but for some reason I feel like ripping open a bag of satisfying and crunchy Rolitos to go with this episode. This week, we watch “The Girl Whose Lips Puffed Up” and get to see the models shoot a high concept snack food commercial. Tyra moves ever closer to coining the term “smize” and Producer Spouse has some helpful tips on how to be “flawsome” so this is a portmanteau heavy episode. Also, Cassie gets to share all the books she read this year so far and feels an unnerving sense of affinity with an evil swirling torrent of rags.

Avast! This week, we watched “The Girl Who Is A Visual Orgasm” (blech) and the lovely ladies of Cycle 2 are headed underwater for a submerged shoot, and I get “Fathoms Below” from The Little Mermaid stuck in my head. That’s not recorded or at all evident in this episode, but take my word for it. Camille tries to manifest her presumed victory to the distaste of basically everyone, Janice Dickinson says maybe the funniest thing ever, and Erin tries to record the podcast while working on a stew in the new dutch oven we got for Christmas.

Do you want to be on top? How do you cultivate a personal style? What on god’s green earth is a jellicle cat? All these questions, and more, will be half answered on this week’s episode, as we watch “The Girl Who Needs Six Months Of Modelling School.” The girls learn about expressing themselves through fashion with the help of a cranky British misogynist, one of the models conceals her autoimmune disease, nobody is helpful to Jenascia and Cassie has a lot of thoughts about the rather confused worldbuilding of Andrew Lloyd Webber (and by extension, T.S. Eliot)’s Cats that ultimately causes more confusion. Later, Erin and Cassie solve racism.
