Is it better to be Single or Married?  What are the benefits of each?

“My wife and I were happy for 20 years. Then we met.”

That’s just one of many Rodney Dangerfield jokes that don’t exactly paint a rosy picture of marriage. But, according to a new study, being married might just save your life.

Okay, that might be an overstatement. But there is fascinating — and compelling — research suggesting that married people enjoy better health than single people. For example, as compared with those who are single, those who are married tend to

    • live longer
    • have fewer strokes and heart attacks
    • have a lower chance of becoming depressed
    • be less likely to have advanced cancer at the time of diagnosis and more likely to survive cancer for a longer period of time
    • survive a major operation more often.

This doesn’t mean that just being married automatically provides these health benefits. People in stressful, unhappy marriages may be worse off than a single person who is surrounded by supportive and caring friends, family, and loved ones. Interestingly, many of these health benefits are more pronounced for married men than for married women.

A newly recognized “marriage benefit” for the heart?

A recent study of 25,000 people in England found that among people having a heart attack, those who were married were 14% more likely to survive and they were able to leave the hospital two days sooner than single people having a heart attack.

This study was presented at a medical conference, so the results should be considered preliminary. But it does raise some questions. For example, were the heart attacks of single people more severe than those in people who were married? And was the health of the single heart attack victims worse before the heart attack than that of the married group?

The headlines describing this study might have single people feeling even more pressured than before to find a marriage partner. I think that would be unfortunate, as a study of this type can only conclude there is an “association” or link between marriage and better health outcomes after a heart attack — but it cannot say with confidence that marriage is the reason for that benefit.

Best US Cities for Tiny House Living

The ongoing fascination with tiny homes hasn't lost momentum, and more people might decide to build tiny in the not-too-distant future. Ordinances that prevent accessory dwelling, and a lack of builders focusing on small living spaces are two significant barriers to growing our tiny house nation, but more and more places are starting to welcome home owners who want to build under 600 square-feet.

Where are the best places to go tiny? To identify states that don't micro-manage miniature home building, we studied resources, ordinances, and builders in all 50 states. Based on an unweighted system awarding points for opportunities to easily live tiny, the top five states where going tiny is a bit easier than the rest are California, Oregon, Texas, North Carolina and Florida.

A tiny house community is a village where tiny house dwellers live alongside each other in areas designed for small-living. If you want to bypass the often challenging process of financing a tiny house, finding raw or undeveloped land for sale where you can legally put your tiny house, or searching for a tiny house for sale with land, living in a tiny house community is often a great and more affordable option.

Sometimes these communities function like RV parks. You basically pay to park your tiny home on wheels on a lot with hookup utilities. Other tiny house communities offer tiny homes for sale or rent, as well as plots of land where you can build your own tiny home.

In fact, renting a tiny home in one of these communities short-term is a good idea for those who aren’t sure about buying or building their own tiny home yet. Why not try it out before you commit?

Below we outline some of the best tiny house communities around the US, with particular focus on Colorado, Florida, and California — states that are particularly tiny-house-friendly.

Can I Build Muscle on a Plant-Based Diet?

    Youtube Video: https://youtu.be/PFNdIup9kS0

When a 315-pound NFL player tells you he's vegan, your jaw is likely to drop. But as more and more athletes experience better results without the inflammation foods of meat and dairy,  this will one day be the norm.

Adding to the long roster of plant-based athletes is Patriot's lineman Lawerence Guy, who stands at 6'4", weighs 315 pounds, and fully blocks out meat and dairy along with trying to swat the ball away from offensive players. Guy has already proven that plant-based is winning: He's already contributed to earning 2 Superbowl rings for the Pats and fans have high hopes for a third this season (despite the drama that led to Vegan Cam Newton getting released). One thing we know for sure is that Guy's diet has set him up to be a key player for New England.

Americans have long been obsessed with building bigger muscles, and ever since Charles Atlas won back-to-back bodybuilding competitions in the early 1920s in New York City, the goal has been to build mountains of muscles to appear stronger, leaner, and present a masculine ideal that resembles early Arnold Schwarzenegger, before the acting career.

Perhaps it's no surprise that steroid use has been on the uptick in recent years among younger and younger athletes, especially high school competitors. The dangers of steroids are well known and anabolic steroids have been banned from international competition to protect athletes from a plethora of potentially harmful side effects that range from the mental, such as irritability and paranoia, to the physical, including kidney and liver damage, the risk of an enlarged heart, incidents of heart attack, stroke, plus hair loss, impotence and more.

The 20 Fastest Growing Jobs in the Next Decade

    Youtube Video: https://youtu.be/PFNdIup9kS0

The employment landscape is constantly shifting. While agricultural jobs played a big role in the 19th century, a large portion of U.S. jobs today are in administration, sales, or transportation. So how can job seekers identify the fastest growing jobs of the future?

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects there will be 11.9 million new jobs created from 2020 to 2030, an overall growth rate of 7.7%. However, some jobs have a growth rate that far exceeds this level. In this graphic, we use BLS data to show the fastest growing jobs—and fastest declining jobs—and how much they each pay.

We used the dataset that excludes occupations with above average cyclical recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, jobs such as motion picture projectionists, ticket takers, and restaurant cooks were removed. Once these exclusions were made, the resulting list reflects long-term structural growth.

Here are the fastest growing jobs from 2020 to 2030, along with the number of jobs that will be created and the median pay for the position.

    Advantages of Tiny Houses

People who have live in tiny houses speak glowingly about their many benefits. They say living tiny has made their lives better in numerous ways, such as:

    1. Lower Expenses. A tiny house costs a lot less to build than a full-sized one. According to The Tiny Life, it’s possible to build a tiny house for $23,000 on average. The average price for a full-sized house, by contrast, is $272,000 – more than 10 times as much. Cutting back on housing expenses enables tiny house owners to put more money toward luxuries (such as travel), save for retirement by using what you might have been spending on a house payment to put into an IRA with TD Ameritrade, or simply work less.
    2. No Mortgage. Most people can’t afford to buy a house without taking out a mortgage, which only adds to the long-term cost. A 30-year mortgage at 4.5% interest raises the overall cost of the average house to $482,000. The Tiny Life reports that 68% of tiny house owners own their homes free and clear, as compared to just 29% of all homeowners.
    3. Lower Energy Use. Tiny houses don’t just cost less upfront – they’re also much cheaper to maintain. Bills for electricity, fuel, water, and waste disposal are all much lower. In addition, it’s much easier to live off the grid in a tiny house, since you can heat the entire space with a small wood stove and power it with a small solar array. Many tiny houses even have composting toilets, which break down waste without needing to be hooked up to a sewage system.
    4. Freedom of Movement. A tiny house has a small footprint, so it doesn’t require a large plot of land. In addition, many small houses are built on trailers, so their owners can take them along whenever they move to a new city. For many people, this is a way to enjoy a life on the road without giving up all the comforts of home.
    5. Easier Maintenance. A tiny house is easy to take care of. With less space to clean and fewer appliances to repair, tiny house owners can spend less time on chores and more on their work, hobbies, and relationships.
    6. Harmony With Nature. The tiny house movement goes hand in hand with the environmental movement. Tiny houses require less material to build and less energy to power. Also, their small size makes them easier to site in a place that’s close to nature.
    7. A Simpler Life. A tiny house doesn’t have room for any kind of excess stuff: bulging wardrobes, elaborate electronics, and huge libraries of books and videos. Tiny homeowners pare their belongings down to the essentials, keeping only the items that truly enrich their lives.

Ready to travel? There are plenty of great options for plant-based or vegan diners who want all the luxury and none of the stress of where to find a delicious, healthy plant-based meal.

With food being a central part of travel, making sure your hotel or resort can accommodate a desire for plant-based eating can sometimes be tricky. Yes, there are some vegan-only hotels and resorts across the US, however, those are few and far between.

The good news is, you don't have to go to an exclusively vegan resort to find what your heart, soul, and taste buds desire; if you know where to look, there are exquisite luxury hotels and resorts in travel-bound locales that have overwhelming and often surprising vegan options.

    1. Wynn Las Vegas, Nevada

You might be surprised to learn that Las Vegas is an extremely vegan-conscious city. And many of the mainstay hotels on The Strip have veg-eating top of mind. The Wynn Las Vegas is one of those properties with dedicated vegan options across all of its restaurants. For breakfast or brunch, Terrace Point for example has an assortment of vegan items like the Vegan Chick’n & Waffles, Vegan French Toast, Vegan Spanish Omelette to name a few, set against views of the Wynn’s fairytale-like garden and pool. They even have the SoCal-based Urth Cafe on the property which has fresh baked vegan pastries and a massive menu with plentiful vegan items. Even at the Wynn’s upscale dining establishments like Jardin, you’ll find at least one dedicated vegan item for each course.

A few other vegan goodies outside the Wynn of note to mention: the Michelin-rated Din Tai Fung, inside the ARIA Resorts & Casino, recently launched an all-vegan menu that is absolutely worth a visit. If you are looking for a truly unique foodie experience, try Blackout, Dining in the Dark, which yes is as it sounds: You have a multicourse meal in pitch black. And although not advertised on its website, the food is completely vegan.

The researchers speculated that the music put students in a heightened emotional state, making them more receptive to information.

“It is possible that music, provoking a change in the learning environment, influenced the students’ motivation to remain focused during the lecture, which led to better performance on the multiple-choice quiz,” they wrote.

According to research from the Duke Cancer Institute, classical music can also lessen anxiety.

Researchers gave headphones playing Bach concertos to men undergoing a stressful biopsy and discovered they had no spike in diastolic blood pressure during the procedure and reported significantly less pain.

But make sure you are listening to classical music, because not all music aids blood pressure, a University of San Diego study found.

Scientists at the university compared changes in blood pressure among individuals listening to classical, jazz or pop music. Those listening to classical had significantly lower systolic blood pressure when compared to those listening to other musical genres or no music at all.

Next time you fly, take a closer look at the window and you’ll notice it has a small hole in it. Don’t worry – it is designed that way. It’s called the bleed hole and it’s there because the air pressure at high altitudes is much lower. Inside the airplane, the pressure is kept at a higher level for passenger safety and comfort.

If there was just a single pane, the stress on the window would be too much, so in fact, it consists of three-layered pieces of acrylic, the middle of which has that hole. The bleed hole ensures the pressure can balance out within such a confined space. It also helps prevent the windows from misting up so you can see the view.

Dimming the lights for a night flight takeoff or landing is actually pretty important. By matching the dark cabin with conditions outside, passengers wouldn’t have to wait for their eyes to adjust in the event of an emergency evacuation. Keeping the window blinds up also helps cabin crew to keep tabs on what’s happening outside the plane should that become important.

Mood lighting is also increasingly popular. Old-fashioned fluorescent lighting wasn’t good for beating the effects of jetlag. However now, flight attendants can adjust LED lighting on newer planes such as the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to mimic sunset and sunrise, helping our bodies to cope better with the changing time zones on long haul flights. Icelandair went one better with thisNorthern Lights display inside the cabin.

First, why is your blood pressure high?

It’s natural to experience short-term spikes in blood pressure, like during exercise or after a cup of coffee. But over time, if your heart consistently pumps out more blood than usual or your blood vessels become stiffer, your blood pressure can stay high, which may lead to hypertension. Many things can cause this to happen, including eating too much salt, being overweight, or even taking certain medications that can cause high blood pressure as a side effect.

You might know that a blood pressure reading has two numbers (for example, 120/80). The American Heart Association describes normal blood pressure as a first number of 120 or less and a second number of 80 or less.

Why is it dangerous to lower my blood pressure too quickly?
Before we talk about specific examples, let’s learn why it’s dangerous to lower your blood pressure too quickly. Your heart and blood vessels carry blood to all your body parts, including large, important organs that keep you alive, like your lungs and especially your brain. Large drops in blood pressure can suddenly stop your brain from getting the continuous blood flow and oxygen it needs. This can lead to a stroke and permanent brain damage.

What can I do if my blood pressure goes up right before doctors’ visits?
Have you ever heard of “white coat syndrome?” It’s what happens when you typically have normal-ranged blood pressure but significantly higher blood pressure in medical settings like hospitals or doctors’ offices. This is often caused by feeling nervousness or anxiety around medical settings. Unfortunately, this means your health provider might think your blood pressure is higher than it really is. White coat syndrome isn’t uncommon. In fact, one study suggests that 15% to 30% of people who have high blood pressure readings might suffer from white coat syndrome. In cases like these, some patients wonder whether it’s possible to quickly lower their blood pressure before a reading. If you’re in this situation, the safest and most effective thing you can do is try your best to relax.

Here are a few relaxation methods you can try:

    • Bring a friend or family member who can help you stay calm. If you can bring a trusted friend or relative with you to your doctor’s visit, their presence might help you feel more at ease. Even having a conversation to distract you from the clinical atmosphere around you can keep you from dwelling on or stressing about your visit.
    • Meditate. Meditation and deep breathing are excellent ways to put your body into a state of relaxation. Pop in some earphones and turn on one of your favorite meditation apps to calm your mind before your visit. If you don’t have any apps, close your eyes and take slow breaths in and out while you try to clear your mind.
    • Find a quiet room where you can wait. Sometimes receptionists and fellow patients in the waiting room can add to your anxiety. Finding a quiet space where you can wait to be called back and focus on taking deep breaths can help prepare you for your blood pressure reading.

If you or your doctor suspect white coat syndrome, your doctor may send you home with a blood pressure monitor that will check your blood pressure periodically throughout a normal day. This gives a more accurate reading of what your blood pressure really is and helps the doctor figure out whether the stress of a physical trip to a medical facility is affecting you.
