Researchers project the number of people living with dementia, a neurodegenerative syndrome which currently afflicts 50 million people worldwide, will more than triple by 2050, soaring to 152 million cases globally. But experts in a recent report say two in five dementia cases could potentially be delayed or prevented by certain lifestyle choices and government policies.
The report builds on the previous nine risk factors identified by the Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, intervention and care, and adds three additional risk factors — air pollution, traumatic brain injury and excessive consumption of alcohol.

Eric Larson, an author of the study and senior investigator at Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle, said just as people can’t control their genetics, people in their 40s can’t retroactively change their socioeconomic circumstances in early life — but people of all ages can, to varying extents, make lifestyle choices like habitual exercising to improve their health.
“In my own [clinical] practice, I’ve been telling patients it would be a good idea to exercise regularly,” Larson said. “When they found out that you could preserve your brain and reduce your risk of dementia, it was actually a powerful motivator for many people to become a regular exerciser.”

Various risk factors from early life to midlife and old age are linked to people’s risk of dementia. Less education before the age of 45 is associated with seven percent of dementia cases. The leading risk factor from the age of 45 to 65 is hearing loss, which is linked to eight percent of dementia cases followed by traumatic brain injury, hypertension, alcohol and obesity. Smoking at ages older than 65 is linked to five percent of dementia cases, followed by depression, social isolation, physical inactivity, air pollution and diabetes.

In recent years, Santa Fe has emerged from the desert as an oasis for incredible food, art, culture, and natural beauty in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Nicknamed “The City Different,” New Mexico’s capital city serves as a thriving creative hub; for proof, look to the trippy installations at Meow Wolf, the Museum of International Folk Art, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, and the classic Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. (One might argue that a day trip to Bandelier National Monument or a turquoise-filled retail therapy session at Wind River could be equally inspiring.)

Santa Fe is also home to many a tasty snack. We’re not just talking Hatch chiles—though those should be enjoyed, too, specifically in a cheeseburger at Shake Foundation and atop world-class Tex-Mex fare at classic joints like Tia Sophia’s, Palacio Café, and the Pink Adobe. And don't skimp on the booze–this is allegedly the birthplace of the margarita, after all. Hit up Maria's New Mexican Kitchen, which boasts a 60-year legacy and more than 200 varieties on its binder-like menu. —Matt Kirouac

What to Say When Negotiating Salary in a Job Offer

Get Out of Your Own Way

In job and salary negotiations, we sometimes “get in our own way,” write Deborah M. Kolb and Jessica L. Porter in their book Negotiating at Work: Turn Small Wins Into Big Gains (Jossey-Bass, 2015). We may fail to recognize opportunities to negotiate, focus only on our weaknesses, and make the first concessions in our own heads before the negotiation even begins. These internal dialogues are where the first concessions in the negotiation are made, write Kolb and Porter.

Kolb and Porter suggest ways to address the question of how to negotiate salary. Begin by gathering information so that you will feel that what you are asking for is defensible. Prepare to explain the value you would bring to the organization. Develop alternatives to the current negotiation to increase your flexibility at the table, and remember that the other party’s alternatives may be less attractive than yours.

In addition, examine your vulnerabilities and plan ahead to compensate for them. For example, if you are insecure about a gap in your work history, think about the important things you were doing during that time and prepare to share them with enthusiasm.

With the Annual Global Retirement Index, International Living’s editors systematically gather and sift through the wealth of opportunity the world offers, comparing, contrasting, ranking and rating their findings to help potential expats pinpoint the best-value destinations around the world. “We strive to create an index that provides the most accurate—and useful—insights for readers," says International Living's executive editor Jennifer Stevens. “There’s no one-size-fits-all destination, but by gathering insights and specific data from our correspondents around the world, we’re able to compare apples-to-apples and create a snapshot of what each of the 24 countries we rank has to offer across categories like Cost of Living, Healthcare, Visas and Residence and more.”

Annually, the International Living editors refine their methodology. “We tweak the index each year to make our comparisons more helpful to potential expats,” says Stevens. The Climate category, for instance, now favors places that offer a variety of options. “The sun may shine year-round in a beach locale, but not everybody likes hot and humid and so this 2020 index gives favor to those places that might, for instance, offer both beach and a cooler highland option,” says Stevens.

Another change is in the Cost of Living category. “We took the cost of housing out entirely and created a new category, which combines buying and renting, which now makes it easier to compare day-to-day living costs,” says Stevens.

Social Security is an essential safety net for many Americans. Even if you haven't saved enough for retirement, you can still count on Social Security benefits in retirement.

However, with an average monthly benefit of just over $1,400, America's most expensive cities are far out of reach without another source of income. If you do have to rely on your Social Security benefits alone — and still want to make the most of your golden years — you'll need to live somewhere affordable that won't compromise your quality of life.

That's why GOBankingRates compiled a list of the 20 best cities to live off of just Social Security. The study factored in the cost of living, livability and median rent and — after comparing the 143 largest cities in the U.S. — combined the scores to determine where you really can get by on just your Social Security benefit.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Eat too Much over the Holidays?  Here's a Detox for you.

The holiday season is upon us and the first stop was Thanksgiving. If your experience was anything like mine, you were around lots of family and lots of food. Not to mention the beer, wine, and pie, ice cream, cookies, and more cocktails and snacks over football (in my family, we need the energy to root for the Detroit Lions year after hapless year and to distract us from the fact that they are the only winless team in the NFL).

In these moments, it can be easy to find ourselves overeating and overdrinking. There’s nothing to be ashamed of, and you shouldn’t restrict what you eat on the days following. Here are some tips I share as a dietitian after a holiday full of eating and drinking.

    Take a walk

You’re feeling insanely full and all you want to do is lay down, but taking a walk is much more beneficial. A 2018 randomized controlled trial found that doing some sort of physical activity around 30 minutes after eating can help blood glucose response. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy either. Even a 10 minute, low-intensity walk or activity can help get post-meal blood glucose balanced.

    Stay hydrated

If you had one too many alcoholic beverages, make sure to follow that up with plenty of water. Alcohol is considered a diuretic, which means it makes your body remove fluids at a quicker rate. If you’re not staying well hydrated, dehydration could be a culprit behind those dreaded hangover symptoms such as headache, dry mouth, and fatigue.

Not to mention, drinking water can help with our metabolism and energy expenditure. One small study on 50 girls found that when they drink 2.5 cups of water 30 minutes before each meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) they had reductions in BMI and body composition after 8 weeks without making any dietary changes.

All of these solutions will help your body start to flush out the toxins from overdoing it yesterday and that is a good thing. Because ginger has been shown to help your body flush out toxins make sure to add it to your detox shot. Lemon adds vitamin C which is helpful to your immune system. We add apple (juiced) and add a few slices of the apple since that adds natural fiber to the detox, and makes your gut feel full, and activates it to get things moving. Try this, and if you want to add some water, that makes it a little less thick. Mix one lemon, apple, and ginger with a pinch of pepper to signal to the body to "start your scrubbing:"

The Apple Lemon Ginger Detox Drink:

    • 1 apple (juiced with a few slices left whole)
    • 1 lemon (peeled and juiced
    • 1 inch of raw ginger (peeled)
    • pinch of cayenne pepper
    • apple

How to Get Ahead of Your New Years Resolutions

Tired of setting goals year after year and not sticking to it? Sick of hashtagging #NewYearNewMe every December 31st when in reality nothing changes at all?

Well listen up, Boost Friends! We hear you, we see you, and WE'RE READY to help you make your New Year's Resolutions stick. These 3 SUPERCHARGED Steps may not be easy or fun...but trust us when we tell you they #WORK.

    Step 1) Start With Gratitude

    First thing's first, Boost Friend.

In order to get boosted, you’ll need to start with a grateful attitude. 2020 was a hard year for all of us, so first take a moment to acknowledge everything you've done to get to this point—no matter how big or small these accomplishments may feel.

Before we get deep into goal setting in 2021, you need to remind yourself that NOBODY—not even our Billionaire Boost Friend Kwanza Jones—succeeds alone. Set up your 2021 for success by having the right people by your side.

Step 2) Surround Yourself with Like-Minded Dreamers and Doers

Say "ba-bye" to the haters and Debbie-downers of 2020, and say HELLO to friends and mentors that live in the present and future. TBH, nobody ever got to their destination by looking in the rearview mirror the whole trip.

If you feel like a supportive social circle is not in the cards for you right now, think again cuz as usual, we've got you covered. Apply now for our Boost Friends community so that you can start 2021 off with a bang! Our Boost Friend inner circle is exactly the self-motivated, positive, dreamers and achievers you always wished you could call up for advice. The only difference with SUPERCHARGED Boost Friends is that you actually can.

Step 3) Set and Get those New Year's Goals!

Ok, ok. Now that you've given yourself some #TLC and surrounded yourself with others who will do the same, it's time for us to dish out the deets. How can you *actually* set a New Year's Resolution that works?!

Well, TBH, the advice we're about to give you has been kept on the DL for quite some time now. In fact, it's the *actual* goal setting guide that Kwanza and her partner in life and business Jose, use to reset and recharge their intentions each and every year. And considering that they invest millions for impact and inspire millions of others every day, we'd have to say it's working pretty well for them.

The secret is...some real, deep self-reflection. None of that cookie-cutter, surface-level stuff, but real, deep, meaningful, self-questioning and course correcting. In the words of Jose, "you can't be afraid of reinventing yourself."

Sometimes the hardest part of making New Year's Resolut

In such a competitive world, the last thing you need to do is undercut yourself. But that's what a lot of us are doing when we communicate in ways that make us sound less confident, less determined, and less sure of ourselves.

But there's an effective solution: Swap out weak words and phrases for ones that will make you come across as more professional and capable.

When you enter an unfamiliar environment or ponder a difficult decision, what do you feel? Do you second-guess yourself or agonize over what to do? Confident people are not immune from self-doubt, but they enjoy a strong sense of security, clarity, and trust in themselves. Confidence affects every area of your life, including work and relationships. Many experiences can damage your confidence, but it’s worth making the effort to build it back up again. Here are ten reasons why confidence matters:

#1 Confidence can make you healthier

Studies indicate that confident people tend to be healthier and live longer. It could be due to the positive effects of emotions associated with confidence – happiness, optimism, and satisfaction. People who lack confidence often struggle with emotions like fear, depression, and anxiety, which are associated with negative health effects. Confidence can also help you with fitness goals. If you have the desire and confidence to exercise, you’re more likely to see success than if you doubted your ability to rise to the challenge.

#2 Confidence can keep you safe

Confident people are less likely to do things they don’t want to do. This can include risky, dangerous activities that others are pressuring you into. Consider why teenagers are at a higher risk for poor decisions or reckless behavior. It’s often because teenagers are still building their confidence and sense of self, which makes them more vulnerable to peer pressure. Anyone without a healthy amount of confidence is more likely to cave to peer pressure, even when they know better.

    #3 Confidence helps with decision-making

Many people struggle with making decisions. If you lack confidence, it’s natural to doubt yourself, try to reverse a decision, or criticize yourself if things don’t go according to plan. Confidence helps keep things in perspective. You’ll feel more secure in your ability to make decisions and if the outcome isn’t exactly what you want, you’re more likely to be able to adapt.

5 sensations that might indicate a medical emergency

    1. Sharp pain rather than a dull ache: This could indicate a torn muscle or ligament, or a problem with an internal organ in the back or side.
    2. Radiating pain: This pain "moves" or shoots to the glutes or legs, which could indicate a nerve compression condition.

Radiating pain could be a sign of nerve damage.

    3. Sudden weakness in the legs: Limb weakness can be caused by compressed nerves in the spine due to conditions like sciatica or spinal stenosis. However, sudden leg weakness could also indicate a stroke.
    4. Incontinence: Back pain paired with inability to control the bowels or bladder might be a sign of serious nerve compression or a spine infection, such as discitis or meningitis.
    5. Numbness or pins and needles in the groin or glutes: This is known as saddle anesthesia and is also a sign of a serious nerve or spine condition.

If you have leg weakness, incontinence, and numbness together, you might have cauda equina syndrome, a serious illness characterized by spinal cord nerve damage. This is a medical emergency, and patients usually need surgery immediately to decompress the nerves and reduce permanent damage.

Other conditions that cause back pain in older adults

We often see a range of less serious but still painful spine conditions in seniors. Most patients with these conditions will not require surgery. Physical therapy, medication, injectable anesthetics, or a combination of treatments usually can control symptoms.

    • Degenerative disc disease, which can cause whole spine pain, and lumbar arthritis, which usually causes low-back pain, commonly develop with age and are considered wear-and-tear conditions.
    • Sacroiliitis is an inflammation of the joints that connect your spine and pelvis. This condition can cause pain in the low back, glutes, and upper legs.
    • Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory arthritis that causes patients’ spines to become inflexible, resulting in a continual hunched forward position and spine pain.
    • We also check for adult degenerative scoliosis and kyphosis, spine-curving conditions that can result in back pain and weakness in the lower extremities.
