How debt payoff apps can help you

Debt payoff apps help you reduce and eventually eliminate your debt. The way this works depends on the app. Here are the most common features of apps to help you pay off debt:

    • Payment planning: Gives you a step-by-step plan for paying off debt based on how much you owe, the interest rate, and your monthly payment amount. These apps often include different payoff options and compare their results. For example, the Debt Payoff Planner app lets you compare different strategies, including the debt snowball and debt avalanche methods.
    • Automated debt payoff: Some of the most popular apps to help get out of debt automate the process as much as possible. Qoins rounds up debit card transactions and then sends that cash as an extra debt payment at the end of the month. Additionally, Digit analyzes your bank accounts and makes withdrawals that you can afford to assign to the financial goals you've set.
    • Tracking and reducing spending: Debt payoff apps that connect to your financial accounts can record your expenses and make recommendations on how to budget. If you follow these tips, it will free up more money for paying off debt. Also, these apps can help you decide which debts to pay off first, like credit card debt and other high-interest debt.

Learning about your options and making goals to pay off debt and learning can reap big benefits. By paying down your debt more quickly, you could save money on interest. You could also find ways to consolidate your debt.

Debt consolidation is when you get either a personal loan or a balance transfer credit card to pay off your debt. Then, you just need to worry about the single monthly loan or credit card payment, instead of multiple. You may get a lower interest rate, too.

Another benefit of paying off debt is that it can increase your credit score. Debt can hurt your credit, especially credit card debt. As you pay it off, your credit score should go up. Some debt payoff apps, such as Mint, even allow you to track your credit score.

How to pick the best debt payoff app for you

To pick the best app for debt, think about what you need help with the most. After you answer that, you'll know which type of app to look for. Here are the most common examples:

    • Are you looking for the fastest or cheapest way to pay off debt? A debt payoff app that lets you compare different payoff methods, such as Debt Payoff Planner, is exactly what you need.
    • Do you have trouble paying more than the minimum each month? You should

It’s common to think of intelligence as something that you’re simply born with. Some people, after all, make being smart look effortless.

Intelligence isn’t a set trait, though. It’s a changeable, flexible ability to learn and stimulate your brain that can improve over time. The key is to practice lifestyle habits that support and protect your brain.

Practicing certain lifestyle habits may help improve your overall intelligence, which includes two types:

    • Crystallized intelligence. This refers to your vocabulary, knowledge, and skills. Crystallized intelligence typically increases as you get older.
    • Fluid intelligence. Also known as fluid reasoning, fluid intelligence is your ability to reason and think abstractly.

Read on to learn what science has to say about the different ways you may be able to boost both your crystallized and fluid intelligence.

    1. Exercise regularly
Staying physically active is one of the best ways to improve brain functioning.
    According to a 2018 study
Trusted Source, light exercise promotes activity in the hippocampus, which is involved in memory. It also enhances the connection between the hippocampus and other brain regions that regulate memory.
    A 2014 study
Trusted Source also found that exercise increases the volume of the hippocampus. The authors of the study speculated that aerobic activity promotes the growth of neurons, which boosts brain structure and function.
To enjoy the cognitive benefits of exercise, it’s important to do it regularly. The good news is that you don’t have to exercise vigorously to reap the benefits.
    Beginner-friendly exercise ideas include:

    • walking
    • yoga
    • hiking
    • bodyweight workouts

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

    I'm buying my first E-Bike... Here's why.

    1. They'll help you go further, faster, longer

Of course, electric bicycles offer many of the same benefits that regular cycling does but because you’ve got an added bit of oomph on board, you’ll be able to travel greater distances and ride for longer.

They’ll also allow you to go faster than most cyclists and in some cases cars. Although modern motors can travel at 50 times faster than cars of 100 years ago, gridlocked roads mean that the average car speed in traffic hasn’t increased at all.

You can get up to 15mph almost instantly on an e-bike, while the average speed of cars in central London is 7.4mph!

    2. They get you riding more

According to a recent report by the Transport Research Laboratory, regular bikes make it out of the shed fewer than 25 times a year, with 46% being used just once or twice a week.

In comparison, 30% of people with electric bikes use them once a day, while a whopping 81% ride them at least once a week. Which means that e-bike users are twice as likely as regular riders to get out there and ride.

    3. They can help keep you fit

Because you’re riding more, you’ll be pedalling more – even if that electric motor is helping you out on occasion.

Which is good news for your heart, your lungs and your blood pressure because endless scientific studies have proven the link between regular exercise and reduced stress levels.

E-bikes are great, too, for people who love the idea of riding a bike, but feel they can’t because their fitness isn’t what it could be, or isn’t what it used to be due to age or illness.

    4. They can help save you money

You can pick up a new, decent quality e-bike from as little as £650 while upkeep costs are roughly the same as running a regular bike (for consumable parts like tyres, chains and brake pads).

In other words, far cheaper than buying, insuring and maintaining a petrol or diesel car, and a lot less than forking out for a season ticket or taking regular trips on public transport.

As for the cost of recharging your bike’s battery, we’re talking pennies when it comes to what it’ll add to your electricity bill.

Read about the advantages and disadvantages of e-bikes on our sister site Driving Electric

    5. They're great for commuting

Not only will they save you cash, they can also free you from the misery of either stalemated traffic or overcrowded trains and buses.

Even though you’re effectively a motorised vehicle, you don’t need a licence yet you’re still allowed to use the cycling lanes.

And because you can lean on that motor a little, you won’t work

Good news: You don't need to rake your leaves. Experts explain why

Autumn is upon us, and that might mean the leaves in your yard are starting to change color and fall to the ground.

But if you were planning to add raking the yard and bagging up leaves to your weekend to-do list, think again. Experts say raking and removing leaves can be worse for your yard – and for the planet, too.

Leaving at least some of the leaves in your yard can help fertilize your grass and other plants, provide shelter for animals and even reduce emissions from landfills. Here's what you need to know about managing the leaves on your lawn this fall.

How can leaves help my yard?

Fallen leaves can serve as a natural fertilizer for plants, David Mizejewski, a naturalist at the National Wildlife Federation, explained to USA TODAY.

“The leaves fall around the root zone of these plants, where they do things like suppress weeds or other plants from growing that that would otherwise compete with the trees and the shrubs,” he said.

“They slowly break down and compost right there at the base of the of the tree of the shrub, right above its root zone, where they return nutrients that the plant can then recycle and reuse next spring,” he said.

10 Ways to Take a Stress Free Family Vacation

If your trip involves air travel, eliminate stress from the get-go by opting for a direct flight. Short layovers can be agonizing as you hurriedly navigate your children through unfamiliar airport terminals in search of food and restrooms. On the other hand, long layovers generate tiredness and boredom. Taking a direct flight will also help you avoid spending money on airport food and unnecessary shopping purchases.

In an era of air travel when basic economy fares offer tempting prices, it’s easy to ignore the add-ons. Pre-flight seat selection is one addition that is fundamental for families. When the time comes to choose your seat, make sure you select this option regardless of whether the airline offers the service for free or not. Most airlines will sit families together, but it isn’t a foolproof system. Waiting until check-in to find out where your seats are can lead to being separated throughout the cabin. Even if flight attendants can rearrange you, it’ll probably involve having to convince another passenger that they’d be better off sitting elsewhere.

A sound night’s sleep is essential to successful traveling. Guarantee you get some much-needed shuteye by sticking to your home sleeping arrangements and find accommodations with individual bedrooms. At the end of the day, you can put the children to sleep and then enjoy some uninterrupted downtime before turning in. You’ll all wake up fully refreshed and ready to embark on the day’s adventure. To achieve this, you might need to veer away from the standard open-plan hotel room. Vacation rentals on websites such as Airbnb and VRBO offer apartments at rates lower than many hotels.

    What Is a Hernia?

A hernia occurs when an organ or fatty tissue squeezes through a weak spot in a surrounding muscle or connective tissue called fascia. The most common types of hernia are inguinal (inner groin), incisional (resulting from an incision), femoral (outer groin), umbilical (belly button), and hiatal (upper stomach).

In an inguinal hernia, the intestine or the bladder protrudes through the abdominal wall or into the inguinal canal in the groin. About 96% of all groin hernias are inguinal, and most occur in men because of a natural weakness in this area.

In an incisional hernia, the intestine pushes through the abdominal wall at the site of previous abdominal surgery. This type is most common in elderly or overweight people who are inactive after abdominal surgery.

A femoral hernia occurs when the intestine enters the canal carrying the femoral artery into the upper thigh. Femoral hernias are most common in women, especially those who are pregnant or obese.

In an umbilical hernia, part of the small intestine passes through the abdominal wall near the navel. Common in newborns, it also commonly afflicts obese women or those who have had many children.

A hiatal hernia  happens when the upper stomach squeezes through the hiatus, an opening in the diaphragm through which the esophagus passes.

    What Causes Hernias?

Ultimately, all hernias are caused by a combination of pressure and an opening or weakness of muscle or fascia; the pressure pushes an organ or tissue through the opening or weak spot. Sometimes the muscle weakness is present at birth; more often, it occurs later in life.

Anything that causes an increase in pressure in the abdomen can cause a hernia, including:

    • Lifting heavy objects without stabilizing the abdominal muscles
    • Diarrhea or constipation
    • Persistent

How to Finance A Tiny House

There are two types of tiny homes: a home on wheels, which could qualify as a recreational vehicle, and a home built on a permanent foundation.

How to Buy a Foreclosed Home

Prices vary as widely as home styles. The average tiny house costs between $10,000 and $30,000 if you build it yourself, according to the tiny house blog The Tiny Life. Costs double if you hire a builder. The price can hinge on how many bells and whistles you add and may even reach six figures.

If you're planning to put a tiny home on your property, says Matthew Davies, founder and CEO of real estate management company Harmony Communities, "your first step would be going to your local building department, whether for the county or the city, and finding out the zoning regulations."

Home Equity Loans or Lines of Credit

If you already own a home and want to add a tiny house to your property, you may be able to tap your home equity to get the money you need.

Instead of a home equity loan or HELOC being secured by the new tiny house, it is secured by your primary residence. This means that if you have trouble paying back the debt, your main home could be seized to satisfy the loan.

Also, keep in mind that you may be limited in how much you can borrow. Many home equity lenders only allow you to borrow up to your combined loan-to-value ratio. This is the amount of debt between your first mortgage and home equity loan or HELOC, divided by your home's fair market value.

The terms of your financing can vary, depending on whether you choose a home equity loan or HELOC. Home equity loans, for instance, typically have fixed interest rates with repayment terms ranging from five to 30 years.

A HELOC often has a variable interest rate and a draw period when you can pay down your balance and borrow again from your line of credit, as with a credit card.

After this initial period, you'll make full payments until your debt is paid off. HELOC terms can range from five years up to 30 years, depending on the lender.

The interest rate on a home equity loan or HELOC can be higher than what you might pay on a traditional mortgage.

Self-care is the act of engaging in activities to gain or maintain an optimal level of overall health. There are 8 main areas of self-care: physical, psychological, emotional, social, professional, environmental, spiritual, and financial.

Research shows that a lifestyle including religion or spirituality is generally a healthier lifestyle.

Nurturing your spirit, however, doesn't have to involve religion. It can involve anything that helps you develop a deeper sense of meaning, understanding, or connection with the universe.5

Whether you enjoy meditation, attending a religious service, or praying, spiritual self-care is important.

As you consider your spiritual life, ask yourself:

    • What questions do you ask yourself about your life and experience?
    • Are you engaging in spiritual practices that you find fulfilling?

Self-care describes a conscious act one takes in order to promote their own physical, mental, and emotional health. There are many forms self-care may take. It could be ensuring you get enough sleep every night or stepping outside for a few minutes for some fresh air.

Self-care has been defined as, "a multidimensional, multifaceted process of purposeful engagement in strategies that promote healthy functioning and enhance well-being."1

Self-care is vital for building resilience toward those stressors in life that you can't eliminate. When you've taken steps to care for your mind and body, you'll be better equipped to live your best life.

Unfortunately, however, many people view self-care as a luxury, rather than a priority. Consequently, they're left feeling overwhelmed, tired, and ill-equipped to handle life's inevitable challenges.

It's important to assess how you're caring for yourself in several different domains so you can ensure you're caring for your mind, body, and spirit.

DrugMaker Merck, announces COVID-19 Pill - Can be taken at home.

In a potential leap forward in the global fight against the pandemic, drugmaker Merck said Friday that its experimental pill for people sick with COVID-19 reduced hospitalizations and deaths by half.

If cleared by regulators, it would be the first pill shown to treat COVID-19, adding a whole new, easy-to-use weapon to an arsenal that already includes the vaccine.

The company said it will soon ask health officials in the U.S. and around the world to authorize the pill’s use. A decision from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration could come within weeks after that, and the drug, if it gets the OK, could be distributed quickly soon afterward.

All other COVID-19 treatments now authorized in the U.S. require an IV or injection. A pill taken at home, by contrast, would ease pressure on hospitals and could also help curb outbreaks in poorer and more remote corners of the world that don’t have access to the more expensive infusion therapies.

“This would allow us to treat many more people much more quickly and, we trust, much less expensively,” said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University who was not involved in the research.

Merck and its partner Ridgeback Biotherapeutics said early results showed patients who received the drug, molnupiravir, within five days of COVID-19 symptoms had about half the rate of hospitalization and death as those who received a dummy pill.

The study tracked 775 adults with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 who were considered high risk for severe disease because of health problems such as obesity, diabetes or heart disease. The results have not been reviewed by outside experts, the usual procedure for vetting new medical research.

Among patients taking molnupiravir, 7.3% were either hospitalized or died at the end of 30 days, compared with 14.1% of those getting the dummy pill. After that time period, there were no deaths among those who received the drug, compared with eight in the placebo group, according to Merck.

The results were so strong that an independent group of medical experts monitoring the trial recommended stopping it early.

Company executives said they plan to submit the data to the FDA in the coming days.

Even with the news of a potentially effective new treatment, experts stressed the importance of vaccines for controlling the pandemic, given that they help prevent transmission and also reduce the severity of illness in those who do get infected.
