What is Juneteenth? What Significant Thing Happened Today?
Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday.
Confederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered at Appomattox Court House two months earlier in Virginia, but slavery had remained relatively unaffected in Texas—until U.S. General Gordon Granger stood on Texas soil and read General Orders No. 3: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

Pranayama breathing is both a meditative practice in itself and a core feature of yoga (on a comparable level with asanas, in terms of importance). I had no idea pranayama was a thing, until a trip in Brazil opened my eyes and a subsequent trip to India educated me on the different types of practices.
I was aware of things like yoga and meditation, but I had not heard of pranayama breathing before. I was genuinely amazed at the impact it had on me. Through simply focusing on the breath, I felt a powerful calming effect throughout my body. For that reason, I want to share these techniques with you.
What Is Pranayama Breathing And Where Does It Come From?
'Pranayama' is a Sanskrit word that loosely translates to 'control of breath. 'Prana' means breath or life force and 'Ayama means to control. So, you can think of it as a set of practices to control the 'prana' within your body through breathing techniques.
Pranayama breathing techniques are thought to have come into existence around the same time as yoga and meditation – in India, around 5000 BC. They are recorded within ancient texts from around this time, such as the Yoga Sutras, and these texts mention pranayama as a foundational aspect of yoga practice.

The term "fight or flight" is also known as the stress response. It's what the body does as it prepares to confront or avoid danger. When appropriately invoked, the stress response helps us rise to many challenges. But trouble starts when this response is constantly provoked by less momentous, day-to-day events, such as money woes, traffic jams, job worries, or relationship problems.
Health problems are one result. A prime example is high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease. The stress response also suppresses the immune system, increasing susceptibility to colds and other illnesses. Moreover, the buildup of stress can contribute to anxiety and depression. We can't avoid all sources of stress in our lives, nor would we want to. But we can develop healthier ways of responding to them. One way is to invoke the relaxation response, through a technique first developed in the 1970s at Harvard Medical School by cardiologist Dr. Herbert Benson. The relaxation response is a state of profound rest that can be elicited in many ways, including meditation, yoga, and progressive muscle relaxation.
Breath focus is a common feature of several techniques that evoke the relaxation response. The first step is learning to breathe deeply.

How to watch the annular solar eclipse June 10th, 2021
2021’s first solar eclipse
The new moon will sweep in front of the sun to create this year’s first solar eclipse on Thursday, June 10. On that day, the moon in its elliptical orbit of Earth will lie too far from us to cover over the sun completely. So a bright annulus – or ring – will surround the new moon silhouette at mid-eclipse. It’s the outer rim of the sun, not quite hidden from view. People have taken to calling these “ring of fire” eclipses. Essentially, they are partial eclipses, albeit very dramatic ones. As with any partial eclipse, you need eye protection to watch an annular eclipse. Watching with the unaided eye will cause eye damage.
All in all, this eclipse lasts for about 1 2/3 hours (100 minutes). It starts at sunrise in Ontario, Canada (on the north side of Lake Superior). Then the eclipse path circles across the northern reaches of the globe. Midway along the path, the greatest eclipse occurs at local noon in northern Greenland. Afterwards, the annular eclipse path swings by the Earth’s North Pole. It ends at sunset over northeastern Siberia.
From any one point along this annular solar eclipse path, the middle or annular or “ring of fire” stage of the eclipse lasts a maximum of 3 minutes 51 seconds.

Cold Shower Udpate
A lot of the research into the benefits of cold showers suggests that the water does not necessarily need to be cold for the entire duration of the shower for the person to experience positive effects.
A person can start by taking a warm shower and then switching the water to cold for a brief time. This could be anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
Some people prefer to take just a brief cold shower of around 5–10 minutes. This may also be a practical approach to cold water therapy.
Several studies cite a target cold temperature of about 68°F (20°C), according to an article in the journal Medical Hypotheses.
However, most of the time, a person’s own perceptions of cold water are enough to make changing the temperature effective.as

7 U.S. Beach towns that You Should Visit
When you think “beach vacation,” you may picture yourself relaxing in the white sand on a Greek island or sipping a pina colada under a palm tree in the Bahamas. While there’s nothing wrong with dreaming of a luxurious international vacay, you may be surprised to find that you don’t have to leave the continental United States in order to enjoy cute beach towns. In fact, there are tons of options for a beach vacation that, for some U.S. residents, might just be a road trip away.
In 2013, National Geographic listed Cannon Beach as one of the most beautiful places in the world, and it certainly deserves the title. The beach is famous for Haystack Rock, which sits 235 feet above sea level and is a protected Marine Garden, teeming with all kinds of wildlife. However, it’s not just its gorgeous shoreline that makes this beach town special; it’s home to a number of resorts and spas, such as the Surfsand Resort, which is nestled right on the shore and gives you a fantastic view of Haystack Rock. Those looking for activities in Cannon Beach can take a stroll into town to enjoy art galleries and quirky kite shops on the windy coast. And, if you are a traveler who won’t go anywhere without your beloved pup, you’re in luck: Cannon Beach prides itself on being a very dog-friendly town.
Block Island is about 30 minutes off the coast of Rhode Island by ferry, and well worth the journey. It’s full of cute bed and breakfasts to make your home base while you explore all the activities of the quaint town. While you’re there, you can check out the Southeast Light lighthouse, eat at one of the more than 40 restaurants, and take a bike or moped to explore the coastline.
Sure, Santa Barbara and Big Sur get all the love, but Pacific Grove is one beach town to visit for scenic beauty alone. It’s not quite as developed as many of the beach towns surrounding it, and many visitors marvel that the views on Ocean View Boulevard and Sunset Drive are unobstructed. Turn to Pacific Grove’s historic downtown area for shopping and dining, taste test at the local farmer’s market, or check out Point Pinos lighthouse — it’s the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast. For those excited to get outdoors, kayaking, scuba diving, and even Segway tours are all on the table.

Does Wearing Earbuds cause hearing loss? ...what about Bacteria in the ear?
The source of this idea seems to be a 1992 study from the medical journal Laryngoscope in which Itzhak Brook and William Jackson measured bacteria levels found on 20 audio headsets of the type provided on commercial airline flights. At the beginning of the experiment, the typical headset had 60 microorganisms on its surface; after an hour’s use of the headphones by a volunteer, that number went up to 650 – roughly 11, not 700, times more. This could suggest that headphones make germs procreate like crazy, an icky enough image, but the authors say it’s more likely that the heat and humidity created in the user’s ears cause “resident organisms from the deeper skin layers and the sweat and sebaceous glands” to congregate out in the open, which to some might seem far ickier.
So we’ve got the general idea that headphones use for an hour = lots more bacteria, but where did that 700-times thing come from? Here we turn to the “Practical Traveler” column in the New York Times of January 3, 1993. Addressing the topic of germs lingering on airplane pillows, headrest covers, and headsets, writer Betsy Wade summarizes the Brook and Jackson report as saying their “research showed a 100- to 700-fold increase in bacteria” on the headset. Now, the Straight Dope staffers and I have turned that study upside down and can’t fathom how Wade got her numbers. Whether they arose from a cryptic reading of the data, a misreading, or a proofreader’s slip, it’s of such that Internet factoids are born.
The bigger question is: fine, wearing headphones causes the ears to teem with bacteria; other than grossing us out, does this affect our lives? Unclear. Though they warn of potential risk, Brook and Jackson couldn’t tie the germ increase to actual health trouble; a Malaysian study of 118 phone-support workers who used headsets seven hours a day found that 11 had chronic ear, nose, and throat problems, but in only four cases were those were related to ear infections. Other ear research suggests that pretty much anything you stick in there – stethoscopes, hearing aids, audiological gear – comes out covered in microbes, but those microbes don’t necessarily make anyone particularly sick. So unless you’re prone to getting ear infections – or you’re one of those germ freaks we all know and love – the headphones-bacteria effect may be more curiosity than wake-up call.
