Welcome to a brand new season of RETRO//RANKED, The Rolling Tape seasonal series in which we discuss various franchises and filmographies that we love and rank their individual entries leading up to some of the biggest new releases. Today, we lift off with Season 6 to the Star Wars galaxy. Over the course of the next several episodes, we’ll be covering every single theatrically released Star Wars film ever made, including one or two that may surprise you. We are, of course, doing this to lead up to the release of The Mandalorian & Grogu, the first Star Wars movie to hit theaters since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

Episodes IV and V, A New Hope & The Empire Strikes Back, are two of the most important and storied entries into the Star Wars franchise. A New Hope was released on May 25, 1977 and directed by George Lucas. The film was nominated for a whopping 10 Academy Awards at the 50th Academy Awards ceremony in 1978, and won for Visual Effects, Sound Mixing, Film Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, and Score for John Williams. Off a budget of around $11 million, the movie grossed over $300 million. At the time, it was the highest-grossing movie of all time.

Star Wars: Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back is the second entry in the Star Wars franchise. It was released on May 21, 1980. The film received three nominations at the 53rd Academy Awards Ceremony in 1981. It was nominated for Production Design, Original Score, and Sound mixing, only winning the latter. The movie made over $200 million off a budget of slightly over $30 million.
