The Rolling Tape

Mouse is the third feature film by creative duo Kelly O'Sullivan and Alex Thompson following Saint Frances (2019) and Ghostlight (2024). The film is a coming-of-age drama that examines friendship, grief, and teenage identity while set in 2002 Arkansas, and stars Katherine Mallen Kupferer, Chloe Coleman, Sophie Okonedo, and Tara Mallen.

Kelly and Alex join us to discuss how Mouse tackles grief from various perspectives, as well as the process behind their writing-and-directing partnership.  

Mouse opens on November 6th in New York at IFC Center and Los Angeles at the Laemmle Royal before expanding on November 13th.

Y’know, this isn’t going to have a happy ending.

Welcome to a BRAND NEW SEASON of RETRO//RANKED, the Rolling Tape network series in which we discuss various franchises and filmographies that we love and rank their individual entries leading up to some of the biggest new releases. 

Today, we’re back for SEASON 8. We’ve covered a lot of major filmmakers and franchises in our previous seasons, like Paul Thomas Anderson, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, and Star Wars. But, this season might end up being crazier than every other season combined because today we’re beginning our deep dive into the career of David Fincher, a filmmaker whose name holds a lot of meaning to many of us at The Rolling Tape. Among us lies a member whose personal ranking of Fincher’s filmography is so controversial that it’s sparked countless debates and arguments within the team, and it partially led to the idea for this show. 

We’re of course covering David Fincher as we lead up to the release of his latest film, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, which at time of recording this first episode, we were not 100% sure would even end up releasing this year. 

We rolled with it anyway because we live in a crazy world. David Fincher’s directing a sequel to a Quentin Tarantino movie with a script written by Tarantino himself. Aaron Sorkin is directing a sequel to a David Fincher movie that he wrote himself. Maybe we’ll cover it on this show. Who knows? 

We do know that we are discussing David Fincher's first two movies: Alien³ & Seven. Many numbers to think about. Welcome to Season 8.

We're continuing our category-by-category Oscar predictions for the 99th Academy Awards!

So far, we've covered Best Picture, Best Director, and both screenplay categories. Today, we looking at the four acting races: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.

We'll also recap the Chicago and Philadelphia Film Festivals, highlighting some of the standout films we saw and discussing how they might shake up our predictions moving forward.

And in case you missed it, awards season is officially underway! Nominations for the 36th annual Gotham Awards were announced on Tuesday, October 27th. The Gothams are traditionally considered one of the first major stops on the awards circuit, helping kick off the season and build momentum for independent films. We break down this year's Gotham nominations ahead of our acting category predictions.

Thou Shalt Not Judge Families Under Observation!

Happy Halloween from all of us at The Rolling Tape, we hope you have your costumes and horror movies lined up for the weekend. Today, we’re a bit less in the Halloween spirit but we are talking about two major movies in Fjord, this year’s Palme d’Or winner, and Possible Love, this year's Golden Lion loser.

We’re going international this week and assessing legal and moral boundaries across borders from auteurs Cristian Mungiu and Lee Chang-Dong. Last week we moved from Portland to Gotham and this week it's Norway to South Korea for our fifth weekend of double feature cross-programming.

In Greenpeace USA’s recent film, Gaslit, Director Katie Camosy teams up with longtime activist and icon, Jane Fonda, to interrogate and reveal the ugly underbelly of the fossil fuel and natural gas industry. As they travel through Texas oil fields and Gulf Coast communities, Camosy and Fonda interview activists from all walks of life, emphasizing the destructive effects of oil and gas extraction.

Camosy joins The Rolling Tape to talk about her relationship with Fonda, working for Greenpeace USA, the challenges of filming through varying conditions and locations, and her approach to interviews as letting people tell their own stories.

We're continuing our updated Oscar predictions coverage today as we break down three more major categories: Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Two weeks ago, we shared our updated Best Picture predictions, discussing some of the films we've already seen and others we're still eagerly anticipating. It's become a fun tradition here at The Rolling Tape to spend the months between October and January breaking down two or three Oscar categories at a time as we build toward the highly anticipated Oscar nominations announcement. As we continue to see more films throughout the season, we're gaining a clearer picture of how these races might unfold.

With festivals still underway, many of our regular predictors are out of commission, so we welcome back a returning guest to the series. He made his debut back in August during our massive pre-fall festival Oscar predictions episode, where we tackled all of the above-the-line categories. He's the Benoit Blanc of Oscar sleuthing, always ready to investigate the clues, uncover the evidence, and crack the case of the Academy Awards!

It took 16 years to mold this face out of clay! That’s factually true of Laika’s dark fantasy epic, Wildwood, and at least sort of fictionally true of DC Studios’ Clayface. Taking our month of cross-programming into weekend four, we are discussing these two movies directed by Travis Knight and James Watkins, respectively. 

Wildwood is written by Chris Butler and directed by Travis Knight and follows the adventures of Prue McKeel as she sets off to the forests outside Portland to find her kidnapped brother. 

Clayface is written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini and directed by James Watkins following Rising Hollywood star Matt Hagen descends into a horrifying revenge-filled monster when scientific ambition strips him of his identity and humanity.

The Summer 2026 Box Office Draft has come to a close. We kicked off the second annual edition of our draft predicting worldwide gross totals for summer releases back in May around Memorial Day, taking a deep dive into the entire summer release schedule through Labor Day. 

Each of us made our predictions for the top 10 highest worldwide-grossing films of the summer and estimated how much each would earn at the box office. We also did a check-in episode in July at the halfway point of the summer.

Today, we've come to check the receipts. We break down what won the summer, flopped against box office expectations, and preview what's to come in the fall and winter.
