The juice is loose! Tim Burton returns to the afterlife with a sequel to his iconic 1988 classic Beetlejuice. After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter, Astrid, accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife. The film stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, and Jenna Ortega.

Tim Burton's career is a journey through the surreal and the gothic, where the ordinary meets the bizarre in a visually stunning blend of emotion and imagination. Emerging in the mid-1980s, Burton quickly established himself as a director with a singular vision, blending elements of horror, fantasy, and humor to create unforgettable cinematic worlds. His signature style—marked by eccentric characters and stop-motion aesthetics—has carved out a unique place in Hollywood. From Beetlejuice to The Nightmare Before Christmas to Big Fish, Burton's films have consistently challenged the conventions of mainstream cinema. This retrospective looks back on his prolific career, tracing his evolution as a filmmaker, his influences, and the lasting impact of his distinctive creative voice on both popular culture and the film industry before looking ahead to his latest effort in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

This month, in the wake of Gladiator 2 thirst traps, the ladies come back to the studio to break down “girl marketing” and the female gaze when applied to film distribution. They also tackle the micro-trend “older woman-young man” and how this trope has progressed since the 40s.

With a World Premiere at Sundance in January, Sean Wang's Dìdi has now been capturing the hearts of audiences as the film has gone into wide release in theater. In 2008, during the last month of summer before high school begins, the film follows an impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy who learns what his family can't teach him: how to skate, how to flirt, and how to love your mom. We discuss the making of the film with editors Arielle Zakowski and Christopher Tennel who detail the post-production process and highlight the multiple formats the film operates in including rebuilding the 2008-era Facebook, MySpace, and skater videos.

In honor of our 100th main show episode of the podcast, we hosted a bracket on social media asking you all to vote between 32 films selected by our team, with the winner being the selection for this review episode. All of our team members were assigned by random draw one year within the last 32 years, and asked to choose between that year’s Best Picture, Palme d’Or, Golden Lion, TIFF People’s Choice, and Indie Spirits Best Feature. After running the bracket on social media, our followers chose The Silence of the Lambs from 1991 as the film for the day. We review the Best Picture winning classic from Jonathan Demme, as well as reflect on the past 100 episodes of The Rolling Tape podcast.
