Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast ) Episode 495
The Biggest Thing I learned In 2022
In my work as a chaplain this year, in all the books I read, patients I visited, and learning I received through didactics, this piece by Parker J. Palmer stayed with me more than any other. I think about it every day and it has transformed the way I look at doing ministry. I am grateful for it and I hope it will be meaningful to you as well.
Below is a written excerpt from the full article, which is linked below, and which I read on this episode.
“The human soul doesn't want to be advised or fixed or saved. It simply wants to be witnessed - to be seen, heard and companioned exactly as it is. When we make that kind of deep bow to the soul of a suffering person, our respect reinforces the soul's healing resources, the only resources that can help the sufferer make it through.
Aye, there's the rub. Many of us "helper" types are as much or more concerned with being seen as good helpers as we are with serving the soul-deep needs of the person who needs help. Witnessing and companioning take time and patience, which we often lack especially when we're in the presence of suffering so painful we can barely stand to be there, as if we were in danger of catching a contagious disease.
We want to apply our “fix,” then cut and run, figuring we’ve done the best we can to “save” the other person.”
—Parker J. Palmer
If this short excerpt intrigues you, I would encourage you to read the whole article at the link below while you listen to the song above. If you need me, I’ll be walking the halls.
Happy New Year,
Rick Lee James

Merry Christmas Friends!
The light of the world has come!
Shine A Light In The Darkness
Rick Lee James
CCLI Song Number:7177171
Lyrics
Verse 1
You’ve been ignoring the truth you know
Been a pretender for way too long
You’ve gotta be what you claim to be
Are you a son of hell or a child of the King
Verse2
After the lies you said were true
The compromise you waved on through
I know you’re wishing for something new
But The ancient roads are calling you
Yeah same old love is crying out to you saying
Chorus
Where there is hatred let us love
Where there is doubt let us trust
Where there is cursing let us bless
Let us bravely walk through the shadow of death
Shine a light in the darkness
Verse 3
You’ve burned bridges and destroyed the roads
There’s nowhere left for you to go
You’ve held grudges and their dragging you down
If you don’t let go then you’re sure to drown
But it’s not too late to turn it all around
Chorus
Where there is hatred let us love
Where there is doubt let us trust
Where there is cursing let us bless
Let us bravely walkthrough the shadow of death
Shine a light in the darkness
Bridge
It’s time to let all the fighting cease
Take up your cross and follow me
Come on and see what see what love can bring
The lame to walkThe blind to see
The deaf to hear
The mute to speak
The mourners cheer
The lepers clean
The prisoners set freeChorus
Chorus
Where there is hatred let us love
Where there is doubt let us trust
Where there is cursing let us bless
Let us bravely walk through the shadow of death
Shine a light inthe darkness
Shine a light in the darkness
Shine a light

"Christmas Time Is Here" is a popular Christmas song written for the 1965 TV special A Charlie Brown Christmas, One of the very first animated Christmas special produced for network TV in the United States, Since the song had become a hit, it was then released on the album A Charlie Brown Christmas as two tracks: an instrumental version by the Vince Guaraldi Trio and a vocal version as sung by the cast of the television special. This is simply my tribute to a great songwriter and musician, Mr. Vince Guaraldi. I play all the instruments and sing all the parts on the track.

Chorus
My Deliverer is comingMy Deliverer is standing by (2X)

Joseph took his wife and her childAnd they went to AfricaTo escape the rage of a deadly kingThere along the banks of the NileJesus listened to the songThat the captive children used to singThey were singing
Verse 2
Through a dry and thirsty landWater from the Kenyon heightsPours itself outOf Lake Sangra's broken heartThere in the Sahara windsJesus heard the whole world cryFor the healing that would flowFrom His own scarsThe world was singing

He will never break His promiseHe has written it upon the sky
Bridge
I will never doubt His promiseThough I doubt my heartI doubt my eyes
