“I love Advent Hymn (Watching, Waiting, Longing), which gives newness to the phrases of Isaiah. Watching, waiting, and longing is what we do now, and these songs help us do that in confidence. I anticipate that this album will be received as a great gift by many who will find their faith nourished and awakened by it.”

O Little Town Of Bethlehem (Saint Louis)

Verse 1

O little town of BethlehemHow still we see thee lieAbove thy deep and dreamless sleepThe silent stars go byYet in thy dark streets shinethThe everlasting LightThe hopes and fears of all the yearsAre met in thee tonight

Verse 2

For Christ is born of MaryAnd gathered all aboveWhile mortals sleepThe angels keep their watch of wondering loveO morning stars togetherProclaim the holy birthAnd praises sing to God the KingAnd peace to men on earth

Verse 3

How silently how silentlyThe wondrous gift is givenSo God imparts to human heartsThe blessings of His heavenNo ear may hear His comingBut in this world of sinWhere meek souls will receive Him stillThe dear Christ enters in

Verse 4

Where children pure and happyPray to the blessed ChildWhere misery cries out to TheeSon of the mother mildWhere charity stands watchingAnd faith holds wide the doorThe dark night wakes the glory breaksAnd Christmas comes once more

Verse 5

O holy Child of BethlehemDescend to us we prayCast out our sin and enter inBe born in us todayWe hear the Christmas angelsThe great glad tidings tellO come to us abide with usOur Lord Emmanuel

Musical Advent Calendar With Rick Lee James

Day 6 - The Rebel Jesus (written by Jackson Browne)

Sometimes people on the outside of Christianity are the best ones to give an accurate critique of it. Jackson Browne makes no claim of being a Christian. In fact, in the lyrics of this song he states that he is a heathen and a pagan, but one who is on the side of the rebel Jesus.

Critics of Christianity can often be mean-spirited and biting with their criticism, and while Browne is not easy on the church, he seems to have the heart of a loving neighbor who wants to offer the most generous and loving critique possible, for its own good. You can hear how Browne’s heart for the poor resonates with the heart of Christ, and also Browne’s frustration with the way that the Church has too often aligned itself with Christ’s enemies, guarding its gold with locks and guns, rather than laying down its life for those in need.

We guard our world with locks and gunsAnd we guard our fine possessionsAnd once a year when Christmas comesWe give to our relationsAnd perhaps we give a little to the poorIf the generosity should seize usBut if any one of us should interfereIn the business of why there are poorThey get the same as the rebel Jesus

Proverbs 27:6 tells us that the wounds of a friend are trustworthy and in these lyrics from Jackson Browne, I believe the church has a trustworthy friend, on the side of the rebel Jesus.

Musical Advent Calendar With Rick Lee James

Day 5 - Light of the World (Love Has Come)

Written by Rick Lee James

http://www.RickLeeJames.com

Light of the World

Verse

A King is born in Bethlehem

In a lowly stable

His rule and reign will have no end

And love will be his cradle

Love will be his cradle

Verse

(Through) pain of labor, blood, and tears

On the cold, and holy ground

The King of kings is born to men

and love will be His royal crown

Love will be his royal crown

Chorus:

Light of the world

Born into the darkest days

Cast the fearful night away

Shine your light on us we pray.

Chorus

Light of the world

Born in the darkest days

Cast the fearful night away

Shine your light in us we pray.

Verse

Truly God and truly man

Born that we'd born again

His holy throne is God's right hand

Love will be His great command

Love will be His great command

Verse:

Let the captives now rejoice

Let the slaves sing freedom's song

A king is born to all the world

Love will be his Kingdom's law

Love will be his Kingdom's law

Chorus:

Light of the world

Born into the darkest days

Cast the fearful night away

Shine your light on us we pray.

Verse:

God eternal, Spoke a Word

(And) Broke the silence of the years

The word made flesh will dwell with us

His Love will wipe away our tears

His love will wipe away our tears

Verse:

Jesus is our living way

The path of truth and holiness

A narrow road we walk each day

The light of life from God to us

The light of life from God to us

Chorus

Light of the world

Born into the darkest days

Cast the fearful night away

Shine your light on us we pray.
