Riddle Me That! True Crime

On this episode Robin & I dig into the disappearance of Bryce Laspisa. This is a really puzzling case from 2013 where Bryce begins to exhibit some strange and erratic behaviors, as well as drinking too much and using the prescription drug Vyvanse to stay up all night and play video games. Bryce attempts to give away some of his most meaningful possessions before mysteriously becoming stranded in Buttonwillow, California. Bryce resists driving the few hours to his parents and is confronted by the police at one point and the man who initially brought him his gasoline, at the behest of his parents. Bryce would eventually crash his car, in what was determined to be a purposeful crash that involved acceleration. A later search of the area would turn up no Bryce, his scent was lost at a truck stop, leading many to believe he hitched a ride. What happened to Bryce? Robin and I attempt to parse through the evidence and the theories.

On this episode I speak with Charlie from Crimelines for her aftershow. We focus primarily on a case I covered early on out of the UK: The disappearance of Claudia Lawrence in 2009. Claudia was a chef at the University of York, she was 35 years old at the time of her disappearance and had an active social life with plenty of friends. Claudia's personal life would be seized upon by the British press when it appeared that she had carried on relationships with married men, judgement from the public followed and then a general sense of disengagement in finding her. Her father always maintained that these accusations were blown out of proportion. We discuss if they are even relevant and if police made a major misstep in choosing the words that they did.

June 2nd 1986 16 year old Elaine Doyle was walking home from a Disco when she was attacked a short distance from her home. There was no shortage of suspects, there would eventually be a conviction, but did the prosecutor and the police get it right?

In this episode I discuss a famous 2008 case out of Florida with Kevin from the Jury Room that is unique, in that the general consensus is that Casey Anthony got away with Murder or at the very least Manslaughter or neglect in the death of her 2 year old daughter Caylee. Over the years I have watched and listened to everything available on this case. I will link sources and other suggested relevant materials below.

In the next couple of weeks I am going to be discussing this case with Kevin from the Jury Room, so if you want some extensive background please give this episode, as well as part two a listen.

In Orlando 2008 little three year old Caylee Anthony's life would be taken from her, despite the fact that Casey Anthony walks free and was determined to be 'not-guilty' by a jury after a 6 week trial, many still believe it's obvious who responsible for the death of Caylee and she somehow has gotten away with murder. This case has complex family dynamics and a pattern of pathological mistruths by Casey.

Kate from the Ignorance Was Bliss podcast tells me all about how Serial Killer Dorthea Puente subverted the expectations of the being the kind older lady who ran a boarding house for those down on their luck in 1980's California. Dorthea took advantage of the vulnerability of her tenants with 9 confirmed kills and 6 unconfirmed.

Check out this episode of my good friend Paige's podcast Reverie True Crime (Paige has one of the most soothing & lovely voices in podcasting). If you listen to this I promise you will be hooked! So Paige will be telling us about Gunn-Britt Ashfield & Austin Allan Hughes: Stolen Life of John Ashfield in Nowra, Australia

John Ashfield was only six-years-old when his innocence, his joy, and the gleam in his bright eyes were stolen. His mother and her boyfriend, sadly, took it all from him on August 5, 1993.

Thank you to J.T. Hosak for helping me write this episode!

In this episode I speak with one of the most interesting people I have ever met: Andrew Gold. Andrew spent a great deal of time living in Argentina working on this project amongst many others. In this two part series we speak about language and accents, Psychopathy, Andrew's work on infidelity in Argentina, non-offending pedophiles, cancel culture and what offends people in 2022.
