You know he went wandering in the Catskills, drank from an enchanted flask, and fell asleep for 20 years. What you probably don't remember from the story is how miserable Rip's marriage was. Rip was a lazy dreamer, allergic to a day's work. His wife was a loud, impatient shrew who never had a kind word. Wait - what? Yup. Matrimonial misery is all over this classic tale. No wonder Rip drank the magic whiskey - and it's a good bet Mrs. Van Winkle never missed him.
