Rom Crime

In this weeks episode we welcome very special guest, Adam Folk, aka Vonia’s awesome hubby! We learn how they fell in love, how Averyn fell in love with them, and how much we all freaking love The Office!

Then Averyn tells the true story of Cathy Marlow. Cathy was a bright, travel loving 28 year old whose decision to go into work on a Saturday to get caught up ended with her senseless, tragic murder.

Happy Valentine's Day, Rom Criminals. We are coming at you hot with a pop up minisode to celebrate love in all forms. This week Vonia tells the story of Melissa Dohme and her brutal experience that led her to the love of her life. Spoiler it was the firefighter / EMT who saved her life at the scene of the crime. We are dying over this story.

When the doctors told her she would likely never talk or walk again, Melissa only heard her own voice saying...YES I WILL! And my goodness, she did and while thanking the first responders who saved her. Spark flew! This courageous story ends well. Her positive outlook and determination is so inspiring and we strive to be like her in tough times. Melissa has gone on to speak out about Domestic Violence today.

He was a star football player who’d just accepted a full ride scholarship to play at the University of Texas San Antonio, he had a loving family and a girlfriend he adored. Then, in the summer before his senior year, an accusation was made that would change everything. What followed was a horrifying example of a perverse and corrupt justice system and a long six year fight for freedom.

Then Averyn tells the true story of Amanda Todd. Amanda was just 12 years old when an anonymous online predator started extorting her for sexual content by threatening to share a screen grab he’d taken of her when she, after a ton of pressure, had flashed her breasts in a chat room.  Amanda refused and this piece of shit, internet goblin shared her topless photo with all of her friends and family on Facebook.  The relentless bullying that followed led Amanda to change schools three times before ultimately deciding suicide was her only option. Before Amanda died, she posted a YouTube video describing her horrific ordeal that immediately went viral after her death. Her story brought the issue of cyber bullying and sextortion to an international level.

Then Averyn continues the true story of Alex Murdaugh. When we left off Alex’s wife and son had been been murdered in the family’s hunting lodge. Police are still searching for suspects and a motive when another shocking 911 call came through. A man changing a tire on the side of the road had been shot in the head and that man was Alex Murdaugh. Hang on to your butts kids bc this story is about to get even darker and crazier than anyone could have ever imagined.

In this weeks episode Vonia covers the dark and twisty thanksgiving Rom Com(ish) film House of Yes. This 1997 gem stars an absolutely fabulous Parker Posey as Jackie O, the mentally unstable twin sister of Marty who is bringing his fiancée, Leslie (Tori Spelling), home for thanksgiving to meet his family. A raging storm cuts the power and as the night goes on this families dark secrets slowly start to reveal themselves to Leslie. Let’s just say the movie ends with Leslie running screaming from the family home.

Then Averyn shares the true story of Alex Murdaugh and his family. The Murdaugh’s were a wealthy, powerful family in Hampton County, South Carolina. For nearly a century the Murdaugh men were the law in their town, seemingly feared and respected by the community, until a shocking double murder in the summer of 2021. On June 7th 2021 Maggie and Paul Murdaugh, wife and son of Alex Murdaugh were found executed in the family’s hunting lodge. Then, incredibly, just a few months later Alex Murdaugh was shot in the head while changing a flat tire. Who out there is targeting the Murdaughs? Strap in Rom Criminals because this one’s a Doozy!

In this weeks episode Vonia (and Averyn) strongly encourages everyone to check out Entergalactic starring Kid Cudi and Jessica Williams on Netflix. It’s an animated Romantic Comedy that is more realistic than any live action rom com we’ve seen maybe ever. Come for the Rom and stay for the stunning visuals in this truly magical movie!

Then, inspired by the last moments of Entergalactic, Averyn takes you on a deep dive of The Tinder Swindler. This true crime documentary is as frustrating as it is shocking as we follow the lives of three women whose lives were destroyed by a shitbag scammer.

In this weeks episode Vonia revisits the late 90s Rom Com, Never Been Kissed! While the romance element in this movie hits a little too close to Mary Kay Letourneau’s home to completely capture our hearts, we can’t deny the fun of watching awkward Josie (Drew Barrymore) go back to high school undercover to get the scoop on teenagers these days.

Then Averyn tells the true story of investigative journalist, Nellie Bly. In order to secure a position as a reporter at New York World, Nellie agreed to go undercover at the insane asylum on Blackwell’s Island to report the goings on behind closed doors. After successfully convincing a judge and two doctors that she should be committed, Nellie spent ten days living on Blackwell’s Island where she witnessed the horrific and inhumane treatment of the patients residing there.
