December 31 is the “seventh day of Christmas” - and this year, it’s on a Sunday. The Jewish Law said that a baby boy born to a Jewish family was to be circumcised and named on the eighth day of life, and that would be January 1 (counting December 25 as Day 1). For Jesus, His circumcision would be the lifelong sign on His body that He would be one of God’s people, Israel. It was the angel Gabriel who told Joseph to name this baby “Jesus” because Jesus would save those people - and in fact, all people on earth, forever - from our sins. In this morning’s section from Saint Paul’s letter to the Galatians, we hear some of what that means for us.

As we begin the New Year many people comfort themselves with the possibility that this new year can’t possbily be worse than this past year - things have got to be better. But who really knows? In today’s sermon we instead think about the kind of comfort only God can and does give us, that is able to carry us through whatever the year might bring.

December 17 is the third Sunday in the Church season called Advent. In this sermon, we’ll think about the world Jesus came into, what He came to do - and what is left for us to do until He comes again in glory to bring us to heaven.

December 10 is the second Sunday in the Church season called Advent. Last week, we heard how Jesus was sent by God to save us from all sins, even the ones we do to ourselves. While it’s true that His salvation means we don’t have to be afraid of God’s anger and punishment, Advent is a time when we are reminded that there might be parts of our lives that probably need to be “straightened up” - but we don’t need to be afraid of God - we can know that He loves us!

December 3 is the first Sunday in the first season in the new Church year. This is the Advent season, when we are getting ready for the Son of God to come to us as the human baby Jesus. The Sundays in Advent will help us to think about why the birth of this Jesus is such a wonderful and important event - beginning with this Sunday, when we’ll think about the meaning of His name - “Jesus.”

Today we begin a three-week look at the last three parables (=stories about the Kingdom of heaven) that Jesus taught, possibly the day before He was crucified. All three look forward in time to the day when Jesus will “come again in glory to judge the living and the dead” (as we say in the Apostles’ Creed), and all three encourage us to be ready for that event. Today’s theme is Being Ready.

In the first four Sundays of October this year we're focusing on one model of how the love of Jesus can give you the strength to remain un-hardened by the world around you. When it seems like the world is just getting harder all the time, where can you find true, excellent and praiseworthy things that can also point you to Jesus?
