After Jesus’ disciples had spent the first Easter day full of panic, worry, fear, and doubt, when He suddenly appeared among them that evening the first words He said to them were “Peace be with you!” That peace comforted them, healed them, encouraged them, and assured them that all would now be as it should be, because Jesus was risen from the dead.

In this worship service for Good Friday we will hear, meditate, and pray about the seven times that our Lord Jesus spoke while He was dying on the cross, and we’ll think about how this dreadful day came to be called “Good”.

Today in the church year we remember that Jesus and His disciples gathered in an upper room in Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish Passover. During that meal Jesus gave them a new commandment - that they should love one another - and instituted a new covenant with them, sealed with the sacrifice of His own body and blood that are in the bread and wine that we eat and drink in the Lord’s Supper.

On this fifth Sunday of the season of Lent, the Gospel lesson tells us that Jesus went to the village of Bethany near Jerusalem and performed one of his greatest miracles (and also one of his last while He lived on earth) - raising a man named Lazarus from the dead.

In the Gospel reading for the third Sunday in the season of Lent, Jesus has a conversation with a woman he meets at the community well in a town called Sychar. The conversation starts with a request for a drink, but Jesus soon offers the woman something much more precious than the water in that well - the gift of eternal life.

In the Gospel reading for the second Sunday in the season of Lent, a Jewish leader named Nicodemus has a quiet chat with Jesus about the message Jesus has been preaching. In this sometimes startling conversation Jesus boils the Gospel down into this one timeless sentence: “God loved the world so much that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.”

This is the service for the first Sunday in the season of Lent. In today’s Old Testament lesson we’ll hear how the devil tempted Adam and Eve, way back in the Garden of Eden; they sinnned, and that sin and the death that followed has been passed down to everyone throughout history. In today’s New Testament lesson we’ll hear how the devil tempted Jesus, too. The difference is that Jesus did NOT sin, and because of that He gives us the gift of eternal life with Him.
