Ruddle Me This! with Taylor Ruddle

Hell of an episode for you today as Ray O'Leary is back and he's let me pick his brain for about an hour about stand up comedy. The bulk of what we cover is how to develop yourself from just telling a bunch of jokes to getting to the place where you are offering something different and giving the audience your version of the world. How to get some perspective, I think he called it. Great listen for up and coming comics, hope you like it!

This time I'm joined by Cyn Shrader Hill, an Author/Editor, Founder of Elk Valley Paranormal (EVP) and Storyteller. Cyn was put in touch with me via Jen of Paranormal NL Podcast so we were chatting for the first time but it ended up being a lovely wee cosy chat about pizza and rain on the roof as well as some paranormal stuff in there too!

The 3 tiny joys we covered

1. 1st bite of pizza
2. Rain on a tin roof
3. Sinking a combo pool shot

The two we didn't have time for

1. Head boops from my cats
2. Putting on brand new fleece-lined socks

In Line By Line, I'm having a shakespearian actor or expert walk me through every line of the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare in an attempt to understand what's going on. The expert adds context and other tidbits to the dialogue and it's a super fun way to go through one of the longest lasting plays of all time.

This week on Line By Line, my guest is Jonathan Samson, a comedian, actor and club booker in Thailand with a heap of experience playing Shakespeare, as luck would have it the very monologue that we covered in this episode by Mercutio was one he's studied extensively and there's so much depth to it!

Another episode of The Cost Of Greatness where Geoff Wilson and I break down the 2014 cult classic film Whiplash and talk about the themes explored in the film and whether the cost of being a great jazz musician is really worth the sacrifice.

Content Warning: Whiplash deals with the topic of suicide at one point and some listeners may find it upsetting.

This is mad, today I have the pleasure of hosting Ray O'Leary, probably the biggest comic I've got on the show so far! Ray and I yapped about the 2009 TV show Glee. I've always been fascinated by the dark and sordid drama surrounding such a positive and uplifting TV show from multiple deaths to the reveal that one of the cast members was a tyrant to work with. Ray talked about why this show was meaningful to him and of course there's a bit of comedy chat along the way. We are planning a proper deep dive into stand up, which will come out in a month or so but for now I thought it'd be fun to defy expectations and release a podcast about Glee with Ray.

Ray's touring all around Australia and NZ in 2025, definitely do yourself the treat and see him live he is hilarious!

Today I'm joined by Vasu Premkumar, one of my day 1's here in the Christhchurch comedy scene. We recorded this podcast real avant garde in a weekend Vasu was visiting Christchurch and we talked about why we enjoy the anime One Piece, who his favourite character is and why it's special to him before being very abruptly ended because I had to move my car and then go and pick up a bookshelf off facebook marketplace. Hope you enjoy it!

As I've gotten older I've found myself disliking the constant bombardment of social media feeds and enjoying signing up to the newsletters of people who's work I enjoy. I genuinely look forward to them each month.

Also, with the recent potential ban of TikTok it's reminded me that while social media platforms rise and fall like empires, having a good mailing list is rock-solid (like investing in the housing market).

Each month I'll be including stuff like upcoming gigs, episodes of the podcast that were released as well as audio snippets, one-liners I'm working on, comedy special reviews, media I've seen that I'd like to recommend, video games I'm playing, basically whatever's bringing me joy at the time.

So if you'd like to read along, give me a follow at taylorruddle.substack.com where once a month I'll post a new article with a voiceover option to listen to, it's basically a secret episode of the podcast!
