The problem with shortcuts is that they're often developed by people with lots of experience but end up getting used by people with almost no experience. The result? When something interrupts the shortcut or rule of thumb, the less experienced person doesn't know what to do. We need to understand there are moments when shortcuts help us and other moments when they can hurt us.
