Raz has been running for many years (back to his youth as a 400m track runner). Recently running has brought him to appreciate the joys of participating in the context of something beyond himself. When he moved to Los Angeles he found himself using running to explore the expansive city. After a while, he found what he loved about certain groups and what drew him to enjoy the groups he attended. This led him to create a group that meets together.
With his experiences of participating and experiencing community, combined with his background as a journalist he sought to tell the stories of running communities far and wide. Through "Running Sucks 101," Raz writes and tells stories.
Listen to this episode as we follow Raz's journey and hear more about his passions and writings.

This sermon is from July 7, 2024, and was preached at Beech Grove United Methodist Church in Suffolk, Va.
Scripture - 23 For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ 25 In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. - 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
In this sermon, we explore Communion as a profound expression of grace within our faith practice. Rooted in the scriptural foundation provided by 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Communion is described as a means of grace, a holy mystery, where Christ is spiritually present and the invitation is open to all.
We emphasize that Communion is not about our worthiness but about Christ's invitation to share in this sacred meal. Paul’s concern for the Corinthian church reminds us of the meal's holiness and the importance of engaging with it respectfully and frequently. We are transformed as Christ’s body through the meal, becoming more Christlike in our daily lives.
Rachel Held Evans beautifully illustrates the inclusivity and transformative power of Communion, reminding us that this meal is about grace, presence, and the communal act of dining with Christ.
Join us as we delve into the significance of this holy meal and its role in our spiritual journey. AMEN!

This episode features Candace Broaddus, a member and coach in the Richmond Running Community.
Candace walks us through her journey of her love for running and how that love, drive, and passion led her to begin to coach in this different way. We explore the Richmond running community and what sets it apart from others. We talk about how she went from participating in a Marathon training program to becoming one of the coaches who helps to support runners.
For the Sportsbackers program, she coaches with, coaching is more than just getting folks through the miles before the starting line. Sportsbackers (organizers and directors of the Richmond Marathon, Half Marathon, 8k) have created a program that draws in hundreds of folks from the Greater Richmond Area. This program not only supports you up to the starting line, but to the finish line as well.
Listen to how Candace has seen her role as coach unfold in this program and why it is amazing to help runners in the lead-up, and all the runners out on the course meet their goals (whatever they might be).

This sermon is from June 30, 2024, and was preached at Beech Grove United Methodist Church in Suffolk, Va.
Scripture:
12 As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13 Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. — Colossians 3:12-17
I delve into the concept of "Conferencing" within the United Methodist Church. Holy conferencing emphasizes the power of laity and clergy coming together to discuss and discern challenging topics under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This practice serves as a powerful witness to the world, showcasing the strength of Christian relationships and communal decision-making.

She passionately revealed how she finds purpose in running for her son and those close to her, emphasizing the profound joy she derives from this heartfelt commitment. Of particular interest is Paisley’s transformation as an introvert, as she candidly shared her evolution in finding fulfillment in running alongside others and building genuine connections within the running community. Tune in to immerse yourself in Paisley’s captivating narrative and the invaluable wisdom she graciously imparted during our conversation.

In this episode, we welcome Katie Wax-White. Katie is a native of Hampton Roads, VA, but currently resides and runs in Atlanta (ATL). However, the journey to be where she is, running as an adult, was once considered impossible. An injury in her senior year of High School put her on the sidelines, almost permanently, and began a painful journey of just trying to be comfortable. For her, running today means so much more than time, it is a reflection of where she has come from. The joy she brings to the community and running is a reminder of the gratefulness we have in movement.
Check out this episode, hearing Katie’s story and what she is up to now.

When life gets busy, it is amazing to know you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. I went back into my previous podcasts archive and found this gem.
Ray is a runner local to the Hampton Roads area, and has become a leader when it comes to helping folks understand the importance of running and movement in general.
Take a listen to Ray’s journey, and I hope to get Ray an official “Run Build Grow” recording to talk about what community has done for his journey at every step.
