    Poem of the Day:

    Fields for miles
    Tall grass
    Mighty trees
    Wide-open space
    A road in between
    Red-winged blackbirds
    Dive, dip—alongside
    Birdsong fills the air
    Stride for stride their
    Presence my guide
    Crows curious
    Caw-Caw-Caw
    Deer looks up
    Dashes out of sight
    What a delight.
    First light—glorious
    Comfort covers me
    Inhale joy
    Exhale worry—
    No need to hurry
    Space in between
    Chaos, calm
    Noise, peace
    Nature to reassure me
    A road in between
    will always be
    waiting
    waiting
    just for me.

  • A blessing, or a curse? Can't tell.

Hey! So I’m new to trail running and I’m not sure yet about all the roots. During last Saturday’s run, I didn’t fall but I had plenty of trips and stumbles.

    A blessing or a curse? I don’t know yet.

What I do know is the trails are challenging me to slow down and pay attention. Both of which I want to do more of in this season. The blessing, the unexpected gift from the roots on the trail.

How about you? What do you want more of? Share with me in the comments below.

    Poem of the Day:

    WILD AND FREE

    Reckless runner
    coming through
    I’m new on the trails—
    have no idea what
    I’m getting myself into
    The woods are great
    The pine needles too
    But boy are these
    Roots slowing me down
    Higher than you think
Sticking way up from the ground
    Lift your knees
    Pay attention
You don’t want to fall in the mud
Get those sneakers over the root
Or you’ll land with a thud
    Roots rule the trail
    An obstacle each run
    Trip stumbles
    Won’t stop me
    I respect what I’m
    Up against
    I say
    Run wild and free

Here’s the link again if you want to check it out: Running Into Poetry-An invitation to be present on your path.

Thank you so much for your support and for spreading the word.

Now to the Poem of the Day:

It’s called- well actually I don’t have a title yet.

Help me out…what title would you give this poem? Share in the comments below.

    Poem of the Day:

What did you spot on your run?

I saw three deer munching some grass
They looked up at me as I passed
Two cardinals a flash of red
Flying by me as I sped
What did you find on your run?
    Some trash that I shoved
    in my pockets—oh wait!
    That’s a dime
    Look at it shine.
    Heading home I looked down
A crumpled up paper on the ground
As I got closer to pick it up
    One dollar
No wait two dollars! That I get
    to snatch up!
    Running is an adventure
    Everyday—
    You never know what you
    Will find or spot
    along the way.

  • Five Mile Wink

Listen to the Poem of the Day out loud or read it below.

    Poem of the Day:

    FIVE MILE WINK

    Five miles steady
    I am ready—
    Sneakers double laced
I will stick to my pace.
    Breathe in confidence
    Exhale doubt
    I will not back down
    I’m in the arena now—
    Resilience shining through
    Fight and courage too
My legs charge with every stride
My arms glide at my side
    Body, heart, mind in sync—
    I give a wink
A secret I know for me
To run with joy and be free
    I’m on the move
    With nothing to prove
    Strong like a mother
    I am no other
    I am a runner

  • Heartbreak Hill

    Hey RWC!

In celebration of The Boston Marathon I want to read two poems today.

But First…did you see that finish! WOW! I had goosebumps watching the women's race, they were shoulder to shoulder (literally) most of the 26.2 miles.

It was amazing and what a finish to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the women’s race. Only eight women toed the line 50 years ago, on Monday 12,100! OH YEAH!

Now look at us! Go! Go! Go!

    Poems of the Day:

    HEARTBREAK HILL

    They call it Heartbreak Hill
    And now I know why
It’s perfectly placed in the marathon
    To make you dig deep
It may even make you weep
    It will be hard
    It will be tough
    You're running in Boston
This is what you signed up for
    Your dream coming true
The yells and shouts from the crowd
Keeps you going and feeling proud
Your legs want to slow down
    but your mind says NO!
    Let’s go, don’t stop
    You’re almost to the top
    Don’t back down
    Pump your arms
    Shorten your stride
    Lean forward and
    Enjoy the ride
As you take in the view
    You feel a pull
    It’s your heart—
    Not breaking
    But full
    WILLOW TREE
    I saw a beautiful graceful
    Willow tree
    Hanging down— inviting me
    To jump up and
    give it a high five
    You made it to Boston
    Your dream of running
    has come alive
    I couldn’t be happier
    A smile across my face
    Feeling connected with
    Every runner
    With each stride I make
    The camarderie is intensifying
    The count down to
    The marathon begins
    Just like the willow tree
    Standing tall, marvelous, strong
    We are together and unified
    We are Boston Strong!

  • You Will Glow

The audio is a recording of the poem of the day- Glowing. Feel free to read or listen.

Hi RWC! This poem I wrote a few days after I ran the 125th Boston Marathon in October 2021. I thought it would be cool to share this poem today to celebrate The Boston Marathon coming up this Monday, April 18!

I’m also running a free promotion on Amazon for my Run to Boston poetry book on kindle. Check it out here and share it with a friend. It’s free until Saturday, April 16.

Good luck Marathoners! You will glow!

    Poem of the Day:

    GLOWING

    Finishing the Boston Marathon
    You will glow
Light will shine from your head
And the tips of your toes
Your smile is contagious and passersby want to know
    How did the race go?
    How did you do?
It’s a great day to celebrate and everyone
    Congratulates you!
    Is it the unicorn?
    The medal around your neck?
    Could be
Or is it more the tradition, the history,
    Boston Strong and the comeback
    That connects us
    The passion over fear
    That brings us together
The light is spreading through the city
    Connections being made
    And sparks flying all around
    We are glowing
    Glowing

  • Second Chance

Listen now or read below a section of my memoir: My Road-A Runner’s Journey through Persistent Pain to Healing.

My alarm goes off. It’s 4:21 a.m. I’m three months into my training for the Wineglass Marathon. Some days it’s hard to lace up and get out the door. It’s so dark and cold. I want to hide back under the covers. My mind starts.

Maybe I can run later today. My back feels so stiff, maybe I should wait.

My thoughts are already trying to talk me out of it. There goes my mind again. I know the pattern. A pep talk is needed. Managing my mind is becoming a daily practice. I’m getting better at recognizing the thoughts that aren’t serving me, and finding ones that will.

You’ll feel better after moving, you always do. It’s a beautiful morning, let’s go see the stars.

I step out of bed and put on the running clothes that I had laid out the night before. This is a trick I do, the faster I get dressed the less time my mind has to talk me out of it.

See, I’m ready. Time to run.

It’s when I’m pounding the pavement I do my best thinking. It’s quiet, the stars are out; it’s just me and my thoughts. I download the day and what I want to get done. I sing songs and write books in my head. It’s my time, and as a mother of two small children, it’s required time. I recognize if I don’t get up and move, my pain is louder and I’m short with my children. This training isn’t just about Boston, it’s also about motherhood. My children don’t deserve a cranky mother, and I have control over that. When I get out of bed and run or walk, my pain is better. Some days it’s gone! Getting out of bed before they get up is a priority. I’m ready. I can be the mother I want to be. It’s not easy, but training for a marathon is training for life.

Have a great Thursday RWC! Happy running, reading, and writing!

    Poem of the Day:

    BRIGHT

    Stars are shining bright
Staring at the great big sky
    I could stay in bed
Glad I love to run instead
Outside time to clear my head

  • Mud of Life

    Poem of the Day:

    Mud of Life

Bound up the trail of life
    Peer around the bend
    Leap over rocks
    and roots
    Your legs in pursuit
    Zig zag the turns
    Mud puddles appear
    How deep is the bottom?
    Will I get sucked in?
    My sneakers will get wet!
I’m not sure I’m ready yet
    Questions spin
Yet you must keep your pace
    No time to stop
    keep on moving
    Even if you face-plant
    don’t say you can’t
    You’re still in the race
    One big adventure
    Time to embrace
the mud and mess of life
    It’s what brings us to
    the other side

  • Dream

We have a guest today on RWC- Brindsley Hughes.

He will be reading the poem Dream from the book Run to Boston.

Enjoy and keep chasing your dreams!

    Poem of the Day:

    Dream

    To run the Boston Marathon
It was going to be great!
I was eager to run in 2003
Yet my body and mind didn’t agree
    The pain took over
    It consumed my days
    I wanted to keep running
    Yet I couldn’t find a way
    The shame was rooted deep
    Yet God had a plan
He gave me the strength to look inward
Face my fears and not hide
    He never left my side
    To follow my dream
I would need to let go
The burdens I was still carrying
    Too many, I know
    I held tight to courage
    And began to unpack
    My load getting lighter
As my runs were coming back
I will not give up on my dream
I am brave, strong, and free
    I choose love
    And connection is key
