Today was day zero, preparation day before officially starting my mission to run 40,075 kilometres over 16.5 years while raising £1 million for children's causes. No actual running today, just deep thinking about the routines that will carry me through nearly 6,000 consecutive days of 10km runs.
I've learned that the energy you spend on daily decisions is energy stolen from what truly matters. When I was building Operations Director, my most productive days were the ones with the fewest micro-decisions. The same principle applies to this mission. Every decision I can automate today is one less opportunity for failure over the next 16.5 years.
This isn't about personal achievement, it's about showing up consistently for children at Great Ormond Street Hospital and BBC Children in Need who can't pause their challenges. Routines don't just create efficiency, they create identity. You stop being someone who runs daily and become a daily runner.
Tomorrow, the real work begins. Today was about building the systems that will get me there.
