Birmingham, AL may not be considered a "big city" - but it is the mother of big cities. After the Civil War, Birmingham became one of the lead producers of the iron that would be used to build New York & Chicago's skyscrapers. The largest manufacturer of this material was called Sloss Furnace, and the harrowing, violent stories that have risen from its past leave no question as to why it is now considered one of the most haunted locations in the United States.
