Shadow Carriers

Somewhere between Chicago and New Orleans, a string of river towns keeps a secret: channels that carry the mermaids home. Our story takes us to Charleston, 1867, where an apothecary named Dr. Trott put a “captured mermaid” on display. The torrential rain & flooding began the next day. The water remembers every debt - and the sea always collects.

Every city’s transit system has its own legends, but few are as chilling as Stockholm’s. In the first of our Four Shadows series, guest writer Andi Bishop traces the story of the Silverpilen, the ghost train said to haunt the Stockholm metro, and the unfinished station where it makes its only stop. When a girl boards the wrong train after a late night out, she learns why the locals say “only the dead get off at Kymlinge.”

Birmingham, AL may not be considered a "big city" - but it is the mother of big cities. After the Civil War, Birmingham became one of the lead producers of the iron that would be used to build New York & Chicago's skyscrapers. The largest manufacturer of this material was called Sloss Furnace, and the harrowing, violent stories that have risen from its past leave no question as to why it is now considered one of the most haunted locations in the United States.

In Glasgow, it was not an adult that sounded the alarm. It was the children. Word spread playground to playground that a seven-foot creature with iron teeth had eaten two local boys and he was coming for more. Hundreds of children armed themselves with kitchen knives, sharpened sticks, and stones and laid siege to the Southern Necropolis. There was a monster on the loose - and they would be the ones to kill it.

In Switzerland, some of the dead don't rest in peace. A headless heretic wandering with his own severed skull, a monk sealed alive in the abbey walls, and an army of the beheaded holding midnight mass for their fallen. This episode, we descend into a land where restless hauntings are measured not in decades, but in centuries.

In 1960s Scotland, eleven-year-old Virginia Campbell became the focus of one of the country’s most documented poltergeist cases as knocking walls, shifting furniture, and levitating desks left clergy, doctors, and teachers searching for answers. Decades later, her story still lingers in the dark, daring us to decide what was truly happening inside that small house in Sauchie, Scotland.
