For years maps were collected from every city, state and Welcome Center all across the United States. If you wanted it all in one book, you purchased the road atlas. You had to have good eyes to locate yourself and plot your way to get where you wanted to go. There were so many highways and side streets. We stacked them up in the study like history books in a library. From there we graduated to a GPS device where we could plug in our destination and it would give us turn-by-turn directions. That was magical. It took away much of the anxiety, saved us a ton of time, and eased our mind that we would actually arrive at our destination by a certain time.  But what about those of us who want to venture off of the paved road?  What is there for us?  Why should we use it?  Let's talk about it.
