S6E16 - 320 Nuclear Power Reactors in our Sewers

Listen Later

There are 320 Nuclear Power Plants in our Sewers

Wastewater contains at least seven times the energy needed to clean it. Said differently, what we call "pollution" is, in fact, a type of chemical energy we struggle to tap into.

The point where it becomes utterly stupid is that we pour a lot of energy into treatment processes to destroy that said chemical energy.

If you take the blowers alone, you know the ones that turn biological basins into brown jacuzzis; they account for about four percent of our energy use.

So if we managed to tap into the chemical energy of wastewater, we would first save that blowing energy and then start being energy positive, turning treatment plants into power stations, which - and it doesn't harm - would be at least carbon neutral.

And that's not science-fiction! With technologies like Microbial Fuel - or Electrolysis Cells, or Supercritical Water Oxidation, we could shift the paradigm, and this already today.

And if we do so, we'll swiftly realize that there are 320 nuclear power reactors in our sewers!

Wanna dive deeper into the topic? I reviewed how Wastewater is Liquid Energy!
