  • 71 | The Power Of Purpose with Jayne Warrilow and Jessica Huie

Our guest on the podcast this week is Jessica Huie MBE, Founder of The Purpose Academy, entrepreneur, and the Author of PURPOSE, published by Hay House. Jessica has enjoyed a glittering career as a journalist working with some of the world’s best-known stars. In 2006 Jessica launched Color Blind Cards, a multi-award-winning multicultural greeting card company that drove an early conversation around the importance of ethnic representation in retail and became the first independent brand to secure a high-street presence for black cards in the UK. Labeled one of Britain’s Most Inspiring Entrepreneurs, Jessica was honored with an MBE for services to entrepreneurship and contribution to diversity and inclusion. In 2017 having recognized a lack of books written by authors of color in the personal development space, she spearheaded the Diverse Wisdom Initiative with Hay House. The program is designed to attract and elevate more writers of color in the holistic health and spirituality space.

Today Jessica shares her own unique path to purpose, from being a teenage mum in the UK, and a successful publicity career to following her calling to become more of herself, and a move to live on the island of Jamaica. Jessica speaks with passion about the ‘magical’ power of purpose, not of something new to be learned but as an inside-out process, stripping away everything that isn’t us, until we are left with only what is, and we find ourselves at our very essence. She talks about creating space for the truth.

Listen in as we talk through how purpose is connected to service, as Jessica states “I am of most service when I heal and expand.”  And we explore how the world would be very different if everyone stepped into the power of their purpose. Jessica speaks with rare humility and gratitude about how the ‘magic’ shows up when she lets go of the ‘white knuckle’ ride of life.

If you have ever felt the “niggle” that there is a greater purpose inside of you just waiting to be expressed, then I encourage you to listen to this resonant dialogue for insights. I suspect you’ll enjoy Jessica’s perspective on the power of purpose as much as I did.

    Key Takeaways

    • Jessica’s journey from a publicist, shaping perceptions to her work today in the Purpose Academy peeling away those perceptions to live from essence.
    • How to begin to uncover your true purpose
    • What it means to allow love to lead your life
    • When we do our own inner work, we show up in service of the whole
    • What is your deeper purpose?

    Memorable Quote

“My greatest work is in surrender, in letting go of the agenda and the need to control where I go. And that goes against a lot of what we were taught, in many ways, it goes against the idea of ambition, but, but I think they can coexist”—Jessica Huie

The Reasons We Don’t And The Resources Needed To Invite Change

Our guest on the podcast this week is visionary leader Janet Harvey, who is also a coach, author, educator, speaker, and CEO of inviteCHANGE LLC, a coaching organization for enterprises. She has trained leaders at Fortune 500 companies across six continents, for nearly 25 years. As a result of her cause-driven work, Janet believes corporate leaders and coaches are the ideal groups to drive change due to the diversity of perspectives and tested approaches to problem-solving. Janet is also an Enterprise Board Director, Certified Mentor Coach, ICF Master Certified Coach (MCC), and an Accredited Coaching Supervisor.

Today Janet shares the unique life path that has brought her to become an advocate for deep change and transformation. From innocent beginnings in the heart of America, she learned very early in life the pain and trauma that others can bring your way if you show up differently; “I had no conscious awareness before kindergarten that I was different in a way that would be uncomfortable for other people.” As a result, she learned self-love, a theme that continues to be core in her life today.

Listen in as we talk through the “inflection point” we find ourselves in at this moment in time and what this means for us as humans and changemakers. Janet speaks with true wisdom and insight about how she believes we can best navigate this emerging new world, including the 5 things that hold us back that can actually become the resources that set us free.

If you have ever asked yourself “What’s the inspiring experience I want to have with my life?” then I encourage you to listen to this resonant dialogue for insights. This is a conversation you don’t want to miss. I suspect you’ll enjoy Janet’s perspective as much as I did.

    • The 5 reasons we resist change and how the same 5 resources are actually needed to invite change

    • How will we re-imagine this next period of time?

    Memorable Quote

“We’re so caught in dualistic thinking. Right, wrong. Black, white. That’s not what the body knows. That’s not what the Earth Knows. They only know unity. We made this up and it really is getting in our way”.”—Janet Harvey

She started her career as a corporate attorney, graduated from the Wharton School with an MBA, and worked in investment banking. Her curiosity led her to write about business as a force for good. Her book the Altruistic Capitalist brings together conversations with leaders at for-profit corporations, entrepreneurs, and investors, and her personal experience, all in service of the changes the world needs. As Lynn says we can no longer rely on governments and non-profit organizations alone to solve our social and environmental problems.

Lynn speaks with a deep passion about having an open mindset, about curiosity and its role in social impact, and about the value of collaboration and partnerships. As she says “It’s not about profit only, it’s about growing the pie”. • 62 | The Power Of Social Enterprise To Address Complex Social Issues with Karen Lee

Our guest on the podcast this week is Karen Lee, Chief Executive Officer of Pioneer Human Services, Karen leads one of the nation’s largest nonprofit social-enterprise organizations in the United States. Under Karen’s leadership, Pioneer successfully operates several revenue-generating businesses that provide living-wage jobs to mission-related employees and help fund its mission of empowering people who have been involved in the legal system to build healthy, productive lives. Headquartered in Seattle, Pioneer serves over 10,000 people a year through its diversion, treatment, housing, and job training programs. Karen is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Law and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Today Karen shares her experiences of being an African/American woman in America, the discrimination she suffered from early childhood and how that instilled in her a desire to dedicate her life to fight racism directly and really make a lasting change in society. Karen shares some shocking statistics that we may often assume there is equal policing and equal punishment and she asks the all important question of how we can be more forgiving and loving, to change attitudes particularly around incarceration and race.

Listen in as we discuss the challenges that exist. Karen speaks with a passion about how discrimination is personal, it’s not a generalized issue; how the complexities of our societal systems perpetuate an unnecessary fear in society that makes people afraid of ‘difference’. She makes it clear that we need to change and Pioneer Human Services, where she is CEO, is helping to make that change reality with their incredible work in the state of Washington. This was such an insightful conversation for me, and I felt so humbled by Karen’s perspective and work giving people a real chance for change. If you’re interested in a fairer future for all, I think you’ll really enjoy our conversation.

    Key Takeaways

    • Karen’s perspective on discrimination, how it is so personal and experience.
    • The opportunities for change, to commit to systemic changes and big picture, sustainable solutions.
    • The need for the basic human rights of fairness, equality, and access, to change the outcomes of so many who live underneath the poverty line.
    • What we can do to change attitudes in the hearts and minds of every American citizen.

    Memorable Quote

We need to get to the root of why people don’t behave the way society expects because everyone can be successful if given the right opportunity and support. there’s hope in creating safer communities that impact families and generate positive outcomes.”—Karen Lee, CEO, Pioneer
