This lecture discusses key ideas from the early medieval philosopher and theologian, Augustine of Hippo's work, The City of God.
It focuses specifically on his discussion in book 19 focused on a universal desire for peace in living beings, specifically among human beings. • Augustine Of Hippo, City Of God Book 19 - The Four Circles Of Relationship - Sadler's Lectures
This lecture discusses key ideas from the early medieval philosopher and theologian, Augustine of Hippo's work, The City of God.
It focuses specifically on his discussion in book 19 arguing that we do not find any lasting peace or happiness in this life. In the course of this discussion, he sets out four concentric circles of relationships that we human being can have.
The first of these is most intimate, and includes the family or household, and our friendships. The second of these is our political or social community, the city. The third is the world as a whole, encompassing all of the peoples and members of the human race. The fourth extends to the cosmos, and includes spiritual beings such as the gods (as understood by pagans) or the good and bad angels (as understood within a Christian perspective).

  • Augustine Of Hippo, City Of God Book 19 - Why Virtues Are Not The Supreme Good
This lecture discusses key ideas from the early medieval philosopher and theologian, Augustine of Hippo's work, The City of God.
It focuses specifically on his discussion in book 19 bearing on whether the virtues - prudence, justice, courage, and temperance - are the supreme good for human beings or whether they are instead something that can lead us towards the supreme good and happiness.
In examining this, Augustine is criticizing ancient pagan virtue ethics, in particular those of the Stoics, but also those of Aristotelians and Platonists. One of his main arguments is that, in this life, virtues carry out a perpetual war with their opposed vices, and that they do so within us.

  • Augustine Of Hippo, City Of God Book 19 - The Supreme Good And The Present Life
This lecture discusses key ideas from the early medieval philosopher and theologian, Augustine of Hippo's work, The City of God.
It focuses specifically on his discussion in book 19 focused on the present life's prospects for human happiness and enjoying the supreme good or final end for human beings. As rational beings, our nature and our desires cannot be entirely fulfilled by the things and goods of this life. Augustine examines this matter in terms of the vulnerability of the body and the soul, the struggle of the virtues with the vices, and the strife and conflict involved in social existence.

  • Augustine Of Hippo, City Of God Book 19 - Philosophical Sects And The Supreme Good
This lecture discusses key ideas from the early medieval philosopher and theologian, Augustine of Hippo's work, The City of God.
It focuses specifically on his discussion at the beginning of book 19, setting out a vast number of philosophical "sects", based on a variety of distinctions. This classification is taken from Marcus Varro's now-lost work, De Philosophia, and has to do with what each sect thinks human beings desire, how they vide virtue, whether they adopt stances from Academic skepticism or Cynicism, what type of life they adopt, and so on.
