Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century philosopher John Rawls' work of ethics and political theory, A Theory of Justice

Specifically it examines his discussion of the two main principles of justice that he thinks rational agents in an initial condition, deciding behind a veil of ignorance, will settle upon

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century philosopher John Rawls' work of ethics and political theory, A Theory of Justice

Specifically it examines his discussion of one of the key insights of the work. This is what Rawls calls the "initial situation" or "condition" in which people would choose basic rules of justice governing a fair society. He envisions this as taking place behind a "veil of ignorance", in which nobody knows who they would be in that society.

This lecture focuses on the conclusion to Hannah Arendt's 1955 course lectures on the History of Political Theory, in which she uses the metaphor of the desert for our late modern condition. She also discusses the sandstorms of totalitarian movements, the lure of escapism, and four types of "oases" - Art, Philosophy, Friendship, and Love.

This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher Aristotle's work of moral theory, the Nicomachean Ethics

Specifically it focuses upon his discussion of a feeling or emotion (pathos) that is not itself a virtue, but does have a mean or middle position, in book 4. This morally relevant emotion is that of shame(aidos), and Aristotle tells us why the virtuous person will feel shame only "by hypothesis", and how this differs from the shameless person. He also discusses why shame is appropriate for younger people, but not for older people.

his lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher Aristotle's work of moral theory, the Nicomachean Ethics

Specifically it focuses on book 4 of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics (and some parallel discussions in the Eudemian Ethics), where he discusses the Virtue of Magnanimity or Great-Souledness, the opposed vices of Small-Souledness and Vanity -- and a fourth state of Modesty or Humbleness.

This is a particularly important virtue for Aristotle, since it ties together the other virtues (like Justice and Prudence do in their ways). Since Magnanimity is associated with pride, it is also a prime example of a fundamental difference between earlier Greek-Roman ways of understanding the virtues, and Judeo-Christian ways of understanding the virtues.
