  • Fyodor Dostoevsky, Notes From The Underground - Revenge, Anger, And Justice - Sadler's Lectures
This lecture discusses key ideas from the 19th century novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky's work, Notes from Underground, which raises a number of issues concerning human freedom, progress, rationality, and desire.
Specifically it examines the emotion of anger, the impulse towards revenge, and the conception of justice. Ordinary people, and "people of action", precisely because they don't think or understand much, think that they are justified in their anger and the revenge they take. For the reflective intellectual, things are not so clear cut.

  • James Rachels, The Challenge Of Cultural Relativism - Relativism And Criticizing Cultural Practices
This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century philosopher James Rachels' essay, The Challenge of Cultural Relativism, found in his Elements of Moral Philosophy.
Specifically it examines whether we can or cannot criticize the practices or moral norms of other cultures or not. The relativist is committed to the view that we cannot - and should not - criticize them, without simply imposing our own culture's viewpoint. Rachels argues that this is mistaken.

  • James Rachels, The Challenge Of Cultural Relativism - Universal Values In Differing Cultures
This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century philosopher James Rachels' essay, The Challenge of Cultural Relativism, found in his Elements of Moral Philosophy.
Specifically it examines the issue whether - as cultural relativists tend to claim - moral norms really are not shared across differing cultures, so that each culture would have its own set of moral norms. Rachels argues for a form of soft universalism, which holds that, while cultural practices may differ considerably, there are some general moral norms acknowledged by the different cultures.
