  • Cicero On Duties Book 1 - Courage, Public Life, And Private Life - Sadler's Lectures
This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher and statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero's work, On Duties (De Officiis), which presents a largely Stoic view on ethics, virtues, relationships, and duties or moral obligations
Specifically it examines where in the course of discussing the virtue of courage (which includes greatness of soul) - he raises the question whether private life or public life provides a better field for exercising the virtue of courage. Although he does think that public life provides a fuller context, it is also beset with more temptations and obstacles to developing or maintaining virtue.

  • Cicero On Duties Book 1 - Courage, Fear And Other Emotions - Sadler's Lectures
This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher and statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero's work, On Duties (De Officiis), which presents a largely Stoic view on ethics, virtues, relationships, and duties or moral obligations

  • Cicero On Duties Book 1 - Beneficence And Degrees Of Relationships - Sadler's Lectures
This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher and statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero's work, On Duties (De Officiis), which presents a largely Stoic view on ethics, virtues, relationships, and duties or moral obligations
Specifically it examines the different ways in which human beings are related to each other - from belonging to the same human race or species, to being members or fellow citizens of the same political community, to being members of the same local community, to being family or friends with each other.
Each of these types of relationships - which can be understood in terms of concentric circles - involves some duties of beneficence (one form of the virtue of justice) between people. Which of them has a higher or more stringent demand upon us? Cicero views the state or political community as having the highest, but also includes family as well.

  • Cicero On Duties Book 1 - Just Limits On Revenge And Punishment - Sadler's Lectures
This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher and statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero's work, On Duties (De Officiis), which presents a largely Stoic view on ethics, virtues, relationships, and duties or moral obligations
Specifically it examines the duties that we owe towards those who do wrong, harm, or insult to us or those we care about. In Cicero's view, punishment, retribution, or vindication ought to be maintained within limits, or it becomes unjust. He focuses particularly on deterrence as a main reason for punishing. He also affirms the Stoic position that anger is a bad thing, so that this emotion is liable to lead us to punish in ways that are unfair, inconsistent, or excessive.
