T: So, what kind of a student were you at school, Aida?

S: I was very study. (Am I correct, teacher?)

    T: I studied very much.

S: Oh, sorry…I studied very much and I am a very teacher pet student. Is it correct my sentence?

T: Don’t worry about mistakes for now. Just tell me about school time.

S: Oh, ok. But I very naughty too. Naughty is correct?

    T: Yes, it is.

    S: I very talk in class …is it correct?...[fading]

Fluency or accuracy? Fluency…accuracy (3 times different intonations).

I suppose before we answer this question, we need to be clear about the definition of each. I’m Edith, your host and today I’m asking some of our teachers who’re well known for their experience and expertise in teaching English.

    E: Hi Alireza.

    A: Hi.

E: So, how do you define fluency and accuracy? What do they mean?

A: Simply put, fluency is connected speech; speaking with appropriate pace without many pauses, and accuracy is grammatical and lexical correctness.

E: Very precise and to the point. Thank you!

E: So, we understand that fluency is speaking without pausing to find words or structures or to correct ourselves. In other words, connected speech which conveys the message the speaker has in mind.

E: So far, we learned about the definition of each. So, Shabnam, let me ask you. What are the different aspects of accuracy?

Sh: Well, when asked this question, most people will only think of grammar. But the truth is, accuracy is way beyond grammar. It also involves vocabulary, pronunciation and function.

E: Right! It’s like, you took the words out of my mouth! [both chuckle] but can you elaborate a bit more on that?

Sh: Sure. Apart from structural correctness, accuracy also involves using the right kind of words in the right situation, paying attention to how formal or informal it has to be or the right collocation and so on.

A: Exactly. Sometimes, we may use a very informal word in a formal situation, or vice versa, which is not really appropriate.

E: I know, right? Can you make an example about that Alireza?

A: The simplest example I can make is about greeting. For instance, “what’s up” and “how do you do?” are both correct ways of greeting but solely depend on the situation in which we use them. Like, we can’t use “what’s up” to greet our boss or we don’t normally say “how do you do” to holler at our besties.

Sh: Right. It’s like going to a formal wedding party in your pajamas.

E: [laughingly] yeah…or going to bed in your Sunday best!

    [everyone laughs]

E: Alright. So, what can you guys say about pronunciation?

    Sh: Well, may I?

    E: Sure. Go ahead.

Sh: I often feel sorry for pronunciation because it’s usually overlooked while it’s so important that it can cause serious misunderstanding.

    E: Right.

    A: True.

E: A very common example is the pronunciation of desert and dessert. You may hear people say “I ate a very sweet desert.” Grammatically it may look fine but it’s the mispronunciation that can alarm the listener.

E: Now, the question is, which one’s more important? Accuracy or fluency?

A: Well, it all depends on your own objective.

E: Uh huh… and what do you exactly mean by objective?

A: I mean, why do you attend an English course? Do you want to be able to communicate when you travel abroad or are you preparing for a test like the IELTS, for example?

Sh: It also depends on the situation you are in. Like, if you’re lost and you want to find your way around a place, you only want to communicate a question about which way to go but if you’re taking a test, of course accuracy will be as important, if not even more important.

E: Right. It’s like you are an archer in a battle field. Sometimes you need to hit a particular target, so you take your time to focus. And some other times, you only need to shoot arrows as fast as you can, with less focus!

So, to conclude what you both said so far, we need to balance between both accuracy and fluency and our objective can help us in that regard.

    A: Exactly

    Sh: That’s right.

E: Now, there’s this question that comes to mind. Can we ever be a 100% accurate or a 100% fluent, do you think?

    Sh: I don’t think…

    A: Uhm...I’m skeptical about that.

Sh: …right, take for instance native speakers. Do they not make any mistakes? Or do they not sometimes lose concentration and get tongue tied or mispronounce something?

    A: Of course, they do.

E: Of course, now don’t we make any mistakes speaking our own mother tongue? Sure, we do!

Sh: We need to realize that the ultimate aim is communication most of the times and mistakes are also possible or let’s say inevitable.

E: Now, we know that accuracy and fluency are both important and since we talked about fluency in our previous episode, I’d like us to discuss how we can improve our accuracy this time? You both are very experienced and knowledgeable. So, let’s see what advice you can give our listeners.

    A: Well, if I may…

    E: Sure.

A: Read: Reading is probably the best way you can improve your accuracy as when you read well-written sources, you become exposed to proper correct English. If you read extensively and frequently, you start to pick up general patterns in English which you can later use.

E: Hmm…I couldn’t agree more. That’s what helped me big time.

A: Right? And one more thing, have a grammar reference book: Speak to an English teacher and choose a grammar reference book. By having a reference at hand, any time you come across a question, you can look it up and find the correct answer. These days many people choose to just search for their problems online. Although this may be somewhat easier, you cannot always be sure that you are learning the points correctly and accurately.

E: Exactly. As handy as the internet may be, you cannot always trust its accuracy. So, you gotto be careful. What about you Shabnam. What do you advise our listeners to do for better accuracy?

Sh: When you sit down to practice your English have a good dictionary at hand. When you read a text or listen to a recording and stumble upon a new word, look it up in the dictionary check its part of speech, pronunciation, whether the word is countable or uncountable and an example sentence with the word. Try to memorize the example sentence, it helps big time. I can still remember the example with the word “conceal” which I found in a paper dictionary many years ago: “You should conceal your sadness behind a mask of cheerfulness.” Isn’t it great or what?

E: I totally agree on that. Not only dictionary examples, but some well-written sentences from authentic sources. I remember whenever I read something and came across a nice sentence, I would always underline or highlight it so I’d practice and memorize it then I’d ask myself “If I were to say the same thing, how would I do so?” and, from that point on, whenever I needed to communicate the same concept, I’d copy the better version.

    E: You were saying Shabnam…

Sh: Yeah. You ought to take a course and attend a language school especially when in basic levels where you can only speak or write in English after a fashion. Teachers are sensitive to students’ needs and preferences and they will definitely help you make progress.

E: Exactly. And remember that for accuracy you need to slow down a bit. To pay attention, focus and notice well-written, correct and accurate structures and to practice them.

A and Sh: That’s right. (or any other interjection)

E: so, to conclude our discussion today, let’s review some of the ways suggested to improve accuracy:

1- Read, read and read some more

2- Have a grammar reference book

3- Jot down well-written structures and repeat them

    4- Take courses

And 5- I’d say practice, practice and practice some more as practice makes perfect and accuracy is all about perfection!

A and Sh: Yeah, right (or any other interjection)

When you see someone speaking English fluently, how do you feel or what do you think? Do you envy them and wonder how they made it so far? Well, people, based on their learning styles, may have different study methods, so, in this podcast we are going to ask some of our best teachers for their advice on the topic. Are you ready?

Hey guys and thank you for joining us today. [everyone responds]

E: Edith A: Alireza Sh: Shabnam S: Shirin H: Hossein

E: Let me begin with Alireza. First off, how are you today?

A: I’m doing quite well, thanks for asking.

E: It’s really nice to have you hear. Let me start with this question: how long have you been a teacher?

A: Well, let me see, I’ve been teaching English for more than 15 years now.

E: Oh, wow. Quite a long time and so much experience!

A: [chuckle], well you can say that again.

E: Alireza if you were to give just one piece of advice to our listeners on how to improve their English and speak more fluently, what would it be?

A: English is a skill – just like, say swimming - studying will only get you so far. You have to do it to learn it. If you want to improve your listening, well you have to listen a lot, and you have to listen to different types of material, especially authentic ones.

Sh: Yeah, you’re right. It works wonders.

    Shirin: Yeah.

    Zhubin: Exactly.

The same goes for speaking; unless you actually talk, your speaking will not improve.

E: Hm…very interesting. Now, what type of students will benefit from this type of…I mean from this tip more?

A: I don’t think it’s limited to a certain type of learner. Rather, different learners will find different ways to practice. For example, as mentioned, you have to listen to improve your listening. Now, what you listen to, well… that is up to you.

    .

E: Thank you so much, Alireza. It was such an interesting idea. Now, let me move on to Shabnam.

E: How did you reach this level of English proficiency and how did you begin your journey?

Sh: Well, truth be told there was a bumpy start before I hit my stride.

I must have been 6 years old when I started learning English, in fact I was pushed by my older brother.

    Shirin: Really?

    E: Oh….how sweet!

Sh: Yeah, he bought me a young learner English course book, which I don’t remember its name, and taught me the words and grammar structures out of context. Poor old me! Since he was not trained to be a teacher I didn’t quite relate to the way he used to teach me. But in all fairness I owe my success to him,..

    E: Oh…you’re such a good sister!

and to give him his due right, he did his utmost to hammer home grammar points.

To cut the long story short, when I grew older I planned to learn it in an enjoyable way.

I learnt that progress in a foreign language does not come from fits and starts, so I decided to establish a focused study routine for myself.

E: Hmm…Wow, amazing. But what does a focused study plan mean really?

Sh: In order to learn a foreign language what you need is exposure to that language. Have you heard of passive exposure? By passive exposure I mean listening and reading in the target language. I remember I totally immersed myself in watching American series and listening to songs in English. I picked up a lot of words and expressions and I jotted them down in a notebook, which I still have. In order not to be a passive learner I also recorded my voice and talked in English. A very useful routine…

    E: Yeah, I agree, definitely.

Sh:… Yeah, was to say everything first in my mother tongue and then in English in that way I could find what words or expressions I did not know. Also, one thing to remember is that we should never trade off variety for consistence. What I mean is make your learning fun, joyful and varied to avoid boredom.

E: Oh, I couldn’t agree more on this. The more enjoyable the learning, the more easily you will learn.

Sh: Let me share one joyful way to speak English more fluently. Have you heard of tongue twisters?

Alright. Well, tongue twisters are a great way to practice and improve pronunciation and fluency.

    Listen:

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers

A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked

If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers

Where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?

E: I don’t know. I don’t know how to say that. It really twists my tongue.

Sh: That was pretty hard. So the principle is if you want to master a foreign language you shouldn’t squeeze it between other tasks in fact you need to make it your top priority.

E: Exactly!... incredible tips you shared. Thank you so much, Shabnam.

    Sh: My pleasure.

    pronunciation .

E: Now, Shirin, let me ask you the same question. When and where did you begin your journey and how long did it take you to speak like you do today?

Shirin: looking back at previous years, English was a big concern for me when I was a teenager. Little English did I know, so I was encouraged to give some intensive courses a try. I attended several workshops and courses and despite all odds I could make it to the advanced level. More importantly, through extensive reading I could learn new words and expressions of English in context. I kept on studying and focusing in what I wanted and now I am who I am.

E: And if you were to give our listeners one piece of advice, in terms of fluency, what would it be?

Shirin: Well, fluency is an issue which multitudes of Ss grapple with. I would simply say “don’t be afraid to make mistakes.” If you want to be fluent, you’d better use the TL whenever you are in a multilingual environment. This way, you’ll get to know your strengths and weaknesses better and as a result you’ll be able to feel free to speak English.

    E: Yeah, I agree, definitely.

Don’t forget, your goal is to deliver a message, so do it! I guarantee the progress. However, practice makes perfect and through it you can make sure everything is perfect.

    .

E: Awesome. You guys have such great tips and suggestions that I really feel like going back to school and studying English. [chuckle]

    A: I know, right?

    Sh: Aren’t you sweet?

A: There are always new things to discover and learn.

E: Exactly, and how excited you feel when you do learn something new.

    E: So, Zhubin, hi again.

    Zhubin: Hi.

E: and thank you for joining us today. You tell us. What do you think is the best way to improve our fluency in English?

Zhubin: Well, as as far as I’m concerned, speaking a language is not producing words and structures. It’s a lucid process of brain.

    Shirin: That’s interesting.

Zhubin: You need to be relaxed and confident while speaking. That’s the main important thing. You have to convey the message. That’s the most important thing.

    Sh: Most definitely.

Zhubin: when we talk about fluency in speaking, it means to produce the language with the fewest pauses. A fluent speaker has the ability to transfer the message in the most appropriate, natural way.

A: You can say that again.

Zhubin: I think one of the most important things to consider in practicing fluency is to put all the anxiety and stress away. The feeling that one might not understand us is a big obstacle. And try to relax and say whatever you want to. Hesitation and doubt is not suggested at all. As a speaker don’t try to think or even make structures in you mind beforehand. Keep that in your mind that you might forget a word. Instead of trying to remember the word try to use another synonym. But don’t make many pauses. Because the one who’s listening to you is getting tired and, to tell you the truth they are not willing to listen to you anymore. Your body language and facial expressions help you a lot to tell others what you really mean.

E: I’ve had that experience too. And it works wonders believe me.

Zhubin: And, in short, don’t think too much and try to let the words and structures come out of your mind without thinking too much about them. The flow goes. Don’t try to correct yourself while you’re producing the language. What I can tell you is, your message has got the first word to say. Then move forward without thinking too much. That’s what I can tell you about language fluency.

E: Wow, wonderful ideas. I believe employing even just one of these methods can push learners forward in their journey to learning English, since they are all tested and tried and can guarantee a great headway. They say the hardest step is always the first step! So, dear listeners, since you’ve already overcome the first step, the rest is just trying and experimenting. Just remember, people have different preferences and learning styles and you need to discover yours. So, never be afraid of trying and making mistakes.

I had a bumpy start .

I hit my stride .

I immersed myself in something .

I grapple with something, with problems .

So dear listeners, thank you so very much for listening to this podcast this far. Please make sure to let us know about your progress and your ways of testing and trying English. Looking forward to hearing your good news. Until then…bye.

[interview] What do you think of the monarchy?

What are your thoughts generally speaking now on the Royal family?

They have a lot of secrets. I think the royal façade needs to be broken down. I think people are really interested in finding out about what their life is really like.

Ah…she’s sweet. Look at her hat!

Well, I think generally, sort of the devilish side of the society. Over privileged, over educated.

What are sort of your general thoughts on the royal family as a whole?

    Ughh…not again.

I think they’re doing a good job.I think they are the royal family. I’m very proud of them. I’m proud to be British. I think they do enough or a lot of good. They bring huge amount of tourists into the country.

That’s splendid! …Which brings enough a lot of revenue into the country.

Do you think we still need them?

Why is she on every single channel? …

I would say not. But I think a lot of people idolize them and see them as massive celebrities…

They pay no taxes, they never get persecuted, they can drive without a license and travel without a passport. Where in our world can you see such a thing? They can exercise their own judgement. On top of all these, is the high cost of their glamorous lifestyle. So, the question is, in what ways are they superior to the rest of the population? What merits do they have that give them the rights to all of these? The answer is simple. Genealogy! Simply, if you are born in a royal family, you automatically inherit all these so-called rights. Isn’t that cool? Well, if you look into it more deeply it’s more controversial than cool and that’s what we are discussing with our friends today. So join us.

E: where’s the remote control? Every single one of them is going on about the jubilee. Isn’t that too much?

    A: just turn it off.

S: Don’t change the channels, don’t change the channels. It’s just so fun.

A: Come on. Just turn it off.

E: Don’t you think it’s unfair that some people are born in a royal family?

B: Well, if I am biased, then I should say, yes, it is unfair. But not for what you may have in mind.

A: So, what do I have in mind, do you think?

B: Well, being a king or a queen is not an easy job.

    A: it isn’t?

S: it’s not an easy job. I mean, it’s not as glamorous as it looks. You see, I’m not talking about what you “can” do, there are so many things you cannot do as a monarch. So, sometimes doing the simplest things would remain a wish for a lifetime.

    A: huh…poor Queen!

E: I don’t think they have any wishes that haven’t come true in their lives.

B: Yeah, particularly that you don’t get to choose to be born a Royal. You know what I’m saying?

C: Right, but you can choose to live a Royal life! Can’t you?

E: Yeah, right. I was going to ask you about what you think about it, Alireza. Can you tell us?

C: Well honestly, I do believe living a Royal life is unfair but unlike Shabnam, I see it from a different angle.

E: Uh huh…and what angle is it?

A: I mean why should just one family have the most crucial rights to themselves while they haven’t really worked to earn them? I mean why should these people be ruling the state just because they were born in so and so Royal Family?

    A: remember I said geneology?

B: Well, I agree that just one family and all these privileges may not seem fair but let’s not forget; living like a Royal means working like a Royal.

A: Oh [chuckle], come on. Working like a Royal? What do they do apart from attending boring parties?

B: The truth is, the Royal Family members have a lot to do and they are not just some iconic figures enjoying themselves lavishing money, although there have been monarchs through history who’ve neglected their duties.

E: all of them do that. All of them…

A: Well, maybe I don’t know about their duties. Please, do enlighten us.

A: Yeah, that’s what I was going to ask. Can you tell us?

B: sure. They have a variety of duties from throwing and attending formal parties to replying mails and inaugurating new projects.

E: since when parties have become a job?

A: Ok, so you’re telling me that these parties are necessary? I mean entertaining tens of thousands of people every year, what good does that do for the people? I mean, can you even imagine the economic load it imposes? Where does all that money come from?

E: you know I hear that last year, last year they hosted about 12000 people in those parties.

    A: on people’s money.

B: The thing is, the attendees are usually the officials, ministers and governors who need to meet and socialize. So, what better place than the royal party?

    E: Oh…

    A: Oh, come on!

E: Now…suppose these parties are essential, what other duties does the monarch have?

S: Actually, the queen brings about most of the UK’s alliance with other countries. Isn’t it great of what?

    A: you mean other colonies!

    E: If that’s true, then that’s Ok.

A: You see, it is said that in the UK the king or queen has very limited power and it’s the parliament that runs the country but that’s not true. You see, the funny thing is that the monarch has the authority to elect the MPs. I mean, isn’t that ridiculous?

A: It is…I guess that’s why it is believed the monarch is just a symbolic figure.

A: Well, I’m not so sure about that.

S: See, this is why I believe their life is unfair. Imagine you’re called the king or queen of a country but have no power over the parliament?

A: Well, it’s not like they have no authority. They get to choose the members who get to decide in your stead, right? And you have the power to disapprove any decision made by the parliament.

E: Yeah, they can even change the prime minister, I hear.

    A: See?

E: Ya, ya, and concerning what you said…I’ve heard the monarch is expected to always approve any decision made by the parliament, but I don’t think that’s the case in the modern era.

    A: I don’t know.

S: And one more thing, the monarch is the head of so many charities. I read somewhere that the Queen of England is in charge of over 600, 600 charities and attends to all their activities.

A: Yeah, but I mean this is more of a show than a real act of charity, I mean, it’s just to remain popular among people.

S: It’s not. Not at all.

E: Well, I think the show is OK as long as they can really help those in need.

S: But I don’t think these are merely shows, because they are established and official organizations and thousands of ordinary people are also involved.

A: I mean it’s just a money laundering scheme. And in any case…compared to the wealth they accumulate, these charities are nothing!

    S: They have great importance.

E: By the way, I hear Queen that Elizabeth has quite a bizarre daily routine. Do you know anything about it?

C: Well, yeah…I read somewhere that her majesty wakes up at 7:30 and is served Earl Gray tea in her bed while listening to the radio on BBC4.

S: I’m sure you’ve noticed how elegantly she dresses up. She has 3 personal assistants and wardrobe curators who help her with her outfit every day. And you know what? She has little say in picking her outfit. Oh, and besides her outfit, she’s had the same hair style for decades. [chuckles]

    A: That’s such a first world problem.

    E: Now that’s so boring.

C: I also read somewhere that she enjoys her breakfast while her favorite music is played for her “live” by the Royal bagpipers.

    E: Now with such a routine…

A: I mean who listens to bagpipe?

    E: Wow…with such a routine, I’d live to be at least 200.

    B: [chuckle] you bet…

S: [chuckle] So, when does she work? And what does she do exactly? [sarcastically]

گفتیم they accumulate wealth کلمه accumulate یعنی

I’ve accumulated a lot of knowledge .

she has no say

B: Well, there are a lot of correspondence she needs to attend to. There are also some visitors she receives every day. And she makes over 200 trips to other countries or states every year. Isn’t this work or what?

    A: No it’s not.

E: So traveling first class is a job, right?

    S: It sure is!

A: I think her routine is pretty much the same everyday…only the visitors change or the places change. Just imagine you do the same things almost everyday for “decades”. How doesn’t she get bored?

C: So, maybe this is how you think life treats her and her family unfairly? [sarcastic]

B: In any case, I don’t think they have an easy life.

C: Oh come on, they do. People are having trouble surviving. What’s so hard about leading an extravagant and glamorous life?

A: Well, well, well…..seems we’re not going to reach any agreement soon. So, I’ll leave this to our listeners. Whose side do you take in this argument? What do “you” think about monarchy? Let us know in the comments.

And, if you’ve come with us this far, it means you have been listening to the entire episode, for which we are really grateful and would be even more grateful if you could leave us your reviews on the podcast.

Now, here, this is the conversation I had with her last night, she was “heartbroken” [everyone laughs]….just listen

I: Can you even imagine? I’d been chatting with an old woman all this while.

G: Well, you made the bed, now lie in it! How many times did I warn you?

I: But he, I mean “she” never sounded suspicious!

G: Why would she? You were a part of her plan from the beginning. God knows how many other people like you have been deceived by her so far!

I: Oh, what am I to do now?

G: But I just hope you didn’t have any financial give and take with him, I mean her?

I: I did [crying]. She borrowed some money from me. [fading]

How different are you from who you like to be? Do you ever pretend to be someone else? Or, let’s say do you know someone who does so? Well, the thing is all of us do it, willingly or unwillingly, but have you ever thought what the world would look like if we all faked our identities?

[2 seconds of the voice message]

    A: Oh my God, I can’t even …

B: Well, such things have been happening since the beginning of the Internet, chat and stuff.

A: I think, like those who fake their identities, some people also “like” to be deceived. I mean, you have to be an idiot to believe someone you can’t even see in the real life.

A: Well, yeah but seems we don’t tend to learn from our past mistakes and this Metaverse thing is going to make things even worse.

B: But what is the Metaverse in the first place?

A: Well, I’ve been browsing here and there to see what it exactly is but seems no one, even the creators, are so clear about it.

B: You bet. Like the onset of any new phenomenon.

C: Well, an internet that you’re not just looking at through a screen but you’re actually inside of.

phenomenon .

A: Wow, that’s kinda cool and somehow scary.

B: So, what are the things that you can do in the Metaverse?

C: Take anything you could think of doing right now, shopping, chatting with friends. Now imagine in the time that takes you to just snap your fingers, you could be doing that thing in a way that feels real with other people who feel present in a setting that’s whatever you want it to be.

A: But apart from the fun, what are the advantages of having this so-called virtual world?

B: Exactly, haven’t we had enough of everything virtual?

C: Yeah, and also this is pretty damn cool. Then there are some undeniable positives.

it’s pretty damn cool – damn cool

    A: Ok, like what?

C: The Metaverse will allow you to live out your fantasies but at the same time the reassurance that you yourself are safe at home.

B: Now what about the character you define your self as? Is it going to be your real self or???

C: You in the way that you would want to be.

A: So, a fake world with fake people, or let’s say avatars.

B: But these avatars are sort of creepy. They look and feel like lifeless robots.

C: Your avatar’s not gonna look like these cartoon people. Meta is also working on the tech to create completely life like avatars, with every hair on the head and every pore on the skin.

A: Wow, so in the Metaverse even your disabilities; if you have one, cannot stop you from living the life you like.

C: I’m not even exaggerating. In real life you could be someone with severe disability in a wheelchair, but in the Metaverse, forget walking, you can be able to fly.

    B: Oh, it’s amazing.

    A: Tell me about it.

B: So, I think in terms of more serious life-related issues, the metaverse can function well too. Like business meetings, customer service, shopping and so on.

A: You bet. Just imagine you want to shop for clothes. Your avatar can try on anything you want to buy and it will fit exactly like when you wear the item in real world. So, you won’t have any of those online shopping issues.

B: And you hear nowadays that some celebrities are buying plots of land in a world that doesn’t yet exist for millions of dollars. Isn’t that crazy?

A: Yeah, like Snoop Dog I heard.

A: Well, I don’t really know who’s crazy and who’s not anymore. Only tomorrow can prove it.

B: and one more crazy thing about the metaverse is that, besides being who or whatever you choose to be, you can interact with anyone or anything you like. You can interact with people, you can interact with things, with buildings…

A: Why would you wanna do that?

    B: Exactly!

C: Do you wanna know what my fundamental fear is about the metaverse? It’s that we talk about all the cool things it will enable for our avatar. That they will be able to do what they want, look how they want, experience anything but it all leaves a big question about what happens to us?

    B: Exactly.

A: Right…When you get to think about the answer, it may sound creepy.

    B: I know right?

C: As incredible as technology is, we’re still people. We still need to be healthy, we need to drink lots of water, we need to work out, meet a partner, have a family and I’m not convinced that metaverse is going to help us to continue to do that.

B: That’s exactly what I was going to say. We are already facing the consequences of the sedentary isolated lifestyle we’ve gotten ourselves into.

A: Right, all the obesity and anti-social behaviors and the environmental problems…

C: The harassment in a way that feels far closer and more uncomfortable, misinformation is more convincing and activities that are more addictive.

B: And also, data leakage; which is already a problem, can cause serious issues if not managed well.

A: It seems that in the future our virtual appearances and our virtual homes are actually going to matter more than the real ones.

B: And that can cause us to lose touch with reality and surrender it our imagination.

A: But I believe the day will come when it will become no less than a necessity, like the internet now!

C: Anyways, it’s not a question of if we’re going to get there or how we’re going to get there. The metaverse is actually here, it’s now and it’s only going to keep evolving towards what the company Meta is talking about.

A: So, we’d better brace ourselves and the reality, so we won’t get lost in a world which is, in reality, unreal!

    [everybody laughs and reacts]

درسته to lose touch with reality.

So, back to you dear listeners. Are you prepared for the metaverse? Do you think the virtual world is going to take over?

If you’ve come with us this far, it means you have been listening to the entire episode, for which we are absolutely grateful and would be even more grateful if you could leave us your reviews on this podcast.

You’re listening to cyber podcast episode 3.

Good evening, everyone and welcome to another episode of Cyber Podcast. I’m Edith your host and today we are with Oliver Anderson, the biographer of famous political figures and I am asking him about the life of a world known politician.

    • - Hi and thank you, Oliver, for joining us, we have a lot of questions about Sir. W. Ch., because I am sure he was the one who changed the fate of the world in the Europe’s darkest hours during WW2.
    • - Good evening and thank you for your invitation. To answer your question, I have to say that yes indeed. An inspirational leader who managed all the events at the time cleverly.
    • - Do you think he was a great leader?
    • - Well, he was able to manage situations skillfully but there were some flaws, as well. Nobody is
    • perfect, anyway.
    • - Let’s start with when he was younger, can you tell us about his childhood?
    • - He was born on 30th November 1874 in Oxford shire to a wealthy, aristocratic family, he was
    • Anglo-American as you know. Yes, he was. His father was British and mother was American.
    • - Oh, I didn’t know his mother was American?!!
    • - Yes, she was. He joined the British army when he was only 21. He participated in Britain’s war in
    • Sudan, India and Second Boer War.
    • - Wow really, I never dreamt he was in the army.
    • - Yes, sounds unusual to me as well to some degree, but don’t forget that during his service he
    • would write his experiences about war so, later he became a famous war correspondent.
    • - Oh, another surprise! A soldier and now a journalist.
    • - Actually, he wrote books about his campaigns.
    • - But, what made him a politician? I think this is a question for me and our listeners.
    • - Well, he used to have different positions in the government during the WWI and WWII and since
    • he was born into an aristocratic family so, he easily paved his way through politics.
    • - Hm...quite expectable. Oliver, we would like to know more about his life style. What was it like?
    • - I should say that he had some exceptional habits.
    • - You mean he was strange in some way?
    • - Well, I can’t say they were unusual habits as you said. I think everyone has a different life style
    • which relates to their personality, and he was not an exception in this way. However, some of his habits were considered peculiar.

    - So, what are those strange habits?

    • - Well, you cannot believe it but unlike many people in high-ranking positions, he didn’t use to be an early bird, he would stay in bed late. He would wake up at 11:00 in the morning and would have his breakfast in his bed.
    • - That sounds incredible.... A prime Minister who wakes up at 11:00.....Odd, isn’t it?
    • - Well, for your information, I should say that he used to work hard but in his own way.
    • - Blimey, difficult to figure it out.
    • - Well, I agree.
مثل .he used to work hard یا ”.he would have his breakfast in bed“ زمانی که در مورد کارهایی حرف می زنیم که در گذشته بصورت مکرر و از روی عادت یا روتین تکرار میشده ان ولی دیگه اتفاق نمی افتند و ترک شده ان از ساختار used to یا would بعلاوه فعل استفاده میکنیم.
    • would و used to هم در اینه که would بیشتر در بیان خاطرات گذشته استفاده میشه و فقط با action verbs بکار میره اما used to هم با action verbs و هم با state verbs استفاده میشه.
    • - To tell you the truth he was a night owl, he would stay awake all night long....
    • - (Chuckles) just like me, not an early bird at all...
    • - You know he used to work efficiently.
    • - Then, I think he did not sleep much, did he?
    • - Well, listen to this. If I say that he had an afternoon nap for an hour you may get even more confused, I suppose.
    • - Siesta! That is what they call in Spain! But wait a minute, getting up at 11:00 a.m. and then again afternoon nap.... ?!!
    • - Yes, he enjoyed his siesta as you said.... and being the wartime Minister....hard to believe.....
    • - Yes maybe a catnap refreshed his mind.
    • - It is possible.
    • - Now, I’ve listened to some of his speeches in the Parliament, he was quick witted without a
    • doubt....
    • - He was, and a great orator, he made very inspiring speeches at the Parliament, and this one that
    • you’re going to listen to is one of the very nice ones, fantabulous I can say! He made this speech
    • to the House of Commons on 4 June 1940.
    • - So, let’s listen to it.
    • - Yeah, that’s a good idea.
    • (The speech)
    • - Very encouraging indeed, I think his speech mobilized the whole nation against any offensive.
    • - I think so too. Very strong and you know that we can find the will in his voice.
    • - Exactly, yeah.

    • - Now, what other characteristics made him different from other politicians of his time?
    • - Sense of humour. As simple as that.
    • - Sense of humour???!!!! How come?
    • - I think it is quite obvious, he was a skillful orator, and also a writer so, his mastery in language
    • made him have a quick wit.
    • - Wow...very interesting. Can you tell us a story of his sharp wits?
    • - As a biographer I cannot verify it is real or not, but it’s become one of the funny conversations
    • between him and Lady Nancy Astor when he was a member of Parliament, let me tell you about it... Once they had an argument, with this lady I mean and the Lady told him:” If you were my husband I’d poison your tea.” And guess what the answer was.
    • Churchill: If you were my wife, I’d drink it.
    • - Yeah, that’s very funny.
    • - (laughs) So quick witted, I really didn’t want to be in her shoes. I heard another one as well
    • when he said:” The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes."
    • - Oh yes, you cannot underestimate fools. But yes, it is believed he said that. And did you know
    • that he used to paint?
    • - Did he? Strange, it is!
    • - Yeah, yeah...he was a great painter in his way and also, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for
    • literature in 1953 for his historical and biographical work.
    • - Marvelous!!! that is just wonderful. He was one of a kind I believe . I always remember him with
    • his iconic cigar.
    • - Yes, his iconic cigar, the Cuban. This is another habit or I should say bad habit he had, he’d
    • smoke 8 or 10 cigars a day. Can you believe that?
    • - No way!!!! 8 to 10!!!
    • - It is unbelievable. And you know that, he was a legendary drinker, he used to drink a lot.
    • - Wow, heavy Drinking and heavy smoking, they must have affected his health, I suppose.
    • - Yeah, probably, once he was talking to Gen. Montgomery and general boasted that he never
    • drank and he never smoked and he was 100 percent fit. Do you know what answer he gave him?
    • - Well, I don’t know maybe he said “I envy you?”
    • - No way, you know that he was much more stubborn than this. On the contrary, he replied “I
    • drink and I smoke and I am 200 percent fit”.
مثلا he was a legendary drinker یعنی به نوشیدن خیلی زیاد معروف بود.
    • - Well, I think we can talk about him for hours and hours but unfortunately we are running out of time.

Oliver, I should thank you so much for attending this interview.

    • - That was my pleasure.
    • - So, back to you dear listeners, could you guess who the interview was about? I guess the clues
    • were quite obvious.....and I believe you guessed it right; Sir. Winston Churchill the former Prime minister of England.
    • Well, if you’re hearing this message, it means you have been with us through the entire episode, for which we are absolutely grateful and would be even more grateful if you could leave us your reviews on the podcast. This podcast was brought to you by, Safir Language Academy’s content development department. All the scripts can be found on Castbox.

[riding / driving a car- ambience]

A: Oh, not again. What is this traffic saying? What are all these people doing outside this time of the day? I need to get to work on time. I don’t really want to be running late again.

B: You won’t, don’t worry. Of course, only if you don’t have me drive back again to check the locks or whatever.

    A: Wait a minute! I don’t remember turning off the A/C. Did I?

    B: No, you didn’t. I did!

A: Oh, thank goodness...but what about the stove? I’m sure I didn’t turn it off. The kettle will burn to nothing by the time we get back at night.

B: Oh, not again. I’m sick and tired of this mess. I’m not driving back home again! You hear that? I won’t get back. You keep making this same mess all and all again!

A: But, what do I do? There are a million of things for me to do before I leave the house and I’m the only one doing them all.

B: Whatever. You need to be more organized and careful.

A: Oh, thanks for the advice! Turn the car round and let’s go back.

    B: No way, no way!!!

A: What do you mean “no way?”

B: Get off and go by yourself. I don’t wanna be late for work, and that because of you again!

    A: [car door slamming] ughhhh....

Does this sound familiar? Are you too one of those handling a million tasks all at the same time and sometimes miss out on or mess up some? You don’t have to worry, you’re not alone. I’m Edith your host and in this podcast, we’ll be discussing an interesting solution to this problem.

Almost everyone is affected by the fast-paced and action-packed lifestyle we have these days. We’re getting busier and busier and more and more tasks fill up our days, and our schedules get tighter and tighter. And forgetting things or missing out on some seems inevitable.

در انگلیسی این نوع تغییر رو با دوتا we’re forgetting یا we’re getting busier and busier نشون میدیم. مثلا گفتیم comparative and comparative یعنیcomparative

more and more things.

But the good news is, the solution to all this is easier and more achievable than what you might think. No wait, I’m not gonna advise you to be more organized or improve your memory or management skills. No! the solution

    we

    ’re

talking about is nothing of that kind but something that’s supposed to make our life easier and more comfortable without putting much responsibility on your shoulder. You might say such a solution does not exist, but... it does.

So, if you’re ready I’d like to introduce to you our special guest today, an IT and technology expert who will give us clues on how things can be operated and managed through technology.

    Interviewer: Hi Interviewee: Hi...

Interviewer:... and welcome to our program. We are really pleased and excited to hear from you about the golden key to a better life!

Interviewee: Hi and thanks for the invitation. It’s a pleasure to be on your program.

Interviewer: Thanks. It’s like you have the key to a more comfortable and less stressful life, do you?

Interviewee: [chuckles] not exactly like that. I’m afraid I don’t have the key to that, but I know some ways that can help you with your tasks, and make your life easier.

Interviewer: [chuckles] well, we are all ears and ready to learn from you. Tell us about the magic. What is it that can help us in our tasks?

Interviewee: Well, there’s no magic as such. The solution however is IoT.

    Interviewer: IoT?

Interviewee: Uh-huh. IoT or in other words internet of things.

Interviewer: [laughingly] I know of the “internet part”. But what is the internet of things exactly?

Interviewee: Well, imagine you just start your work in your office when you suddenly think “Did I lock the front door??” but since you have an important meeting that you cannot miss, you are not able to go back and check. And, you have no one else to do this for you, either. So, what happens? You are stressed the whole day until you get back home.

Interviewer: Oh, tell me about it...just a typical day for me.

Interviewee: I know right? But the thing is, we all have a cellphone and the internet at least, right?

Interviewer: Uh-huh, almost everyone does have them now.

Interviewee: Right, but most people think that you get connected to the internet through your phone, PC or tablet only for communication purposes. I mean to call or message someone. But the thing is, through IoT, devices and appliances can get connected to one another too. This way they can be monitored or operated remotely.

Interviewer: Wow, amazing. So, you mean you connect your home appliances like the fridge or the A/C to the internet and check or operate them through the internet, right?

Interviewee: Yes, exactly. The IoT is shaping our lives. In fact, IoT is a network of devices and appliances working automatically through the internet.

    Interviewer: Wow, absolutely incredible.

Interviewee: Well, take smart homes, for instance. In a smart home, you’re A/C, refrigerator, washing machine and the door lock are all smart and connected to the internet. So, if you want to check the status of an appliance while you’re away, you can simply do it through your smart phone, which is also connected to the device through the internet. And this is called the internet of things or IoT!

Interviewer: That’s wonderful. You see, we thought the internet connects only people to one another but now even our appliances can interact with each other. Absolutely amazing!

Interviewee: Exactly. For instance, when your alarm clock goes off in the morning, it sends signals to the coffee machine to start operating, so, by the time you get up, your coffee is also ready. And you can expand this network of appliances to your liking.

Interviewer: Now, this sounds almost too good to be true.

Could you tell us some of the drawbacks to IoT?

Interviewee: Well, you might have guessed one already. The internet connection and the related problems.

Interviewer: Yeah, and that’s kinda scary. Like, imagine you are away and want to turn something on or off at home but the connection fails, so there’s nothing you can do but to either return or run the risk of getting things out of hand.

Interviewee: Exactly. This is a big problem for places with unstable internet connection. Perhaps a more serious drawback could be security issues. We’ve all heard of, if not experienced, hacking. When using IoT, hacking one device may give access to another device as well, and this can endanger your privacy or confidential information.

Interviewer: Oh, that would be disastrous. But how do you see the future of IoT? Do you think it will become safer or

    otherwise?

Interviewee: Well, I believe there won’t be much change any time soon. The security may get better but so will the hackers, so I don’t think much will change, but I do believe IoT will be more widely used than now.

Interviewer: Hmm...I see. So, to conclude our discussion today, what advice would you give our listeners concerning IoT?

Interviewee: Well, I’d say enjoy smart technology but be smarter than the technology!

Interviewer: [laughingly] Wow, thank you so very much for the information you shared and the great advice.

Interviewer: So, back to you dear listeners. What smart technology do

    you

use? How do you think IoT can make

    y

    our

life easier? Let us know in the comments.

This is Cyber Podcast episode one.

    [Intro music]

Welcome to the first episode of our new podcast series “A Day in the life of E.M .” I am Edith your host and in these series we will be conducting imaginary interviews with famous characters based on their real life stories, but won’t be telling you their names. We would like you to listen and guess who the character is.

    [music]

    [music]

[background music] Learning about famous people’s lives is always full of insight and can give us some ideas or even life lessons and that’s why we have decided to ask our special guest today about their life. So, ladies and gentlemen, time to roll out the red carpet for our featured guest ...

    [music]

Hey Jake, what happened to the contract? Yea, yea, yeah...bring me the paper as soon as possible. I have to go to the meeting in two minutes time. yeah...hold on, hold on...I’m thinking about a problem. No, no, no...I’m just thinking about the contract. Just wait a moment please. Tell him that I’ll call him later. Yeah, yeah....I’m so busy. Yeah...hold on, hold on, hold on. Tell him that I will see him tomorrow at 12:00 for lunch. Uh...lunch, yeah...that’s right. Ok, where should we go for the meeting? Which, which room is that? Ok, yeah...you just look for the project Alfa. Ya, ya, ya....and tell me. They’re just telling me something about the prices. I have to think about it. Just talk to our lawyer about it. Yeah, babye...let’s go let’s go.

Interviewer: Hey, ...! How are you today and thank you for accepting our invitation. It’s really nice to see you here with us.

Guest: It’s nice to meet you too and it’s a pleasure to be here today.

Interviewer: Oh, the pleasure is all mine. Knowing how busy you are and how tight your schedule is, I’ll go straight to the first question. Tell us a bit about how you start your day. Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Guest: Well, I get up at 7:00 am and I always make sure I have 6 hours of sleep. Interviewer: Oh, so you are a morning person?

Guest: well, you can say that I am.

Interviewer: So, what’s next after you wake up?

Guest: I immediately take a shower and then have coffee. I love this part, and I never skip my morning coffee.

Interviewer: What about breakfast then? Do you eat breakfast too?

Guest: Well, depending on how busy I am for the day, I may or may not have breakfast. It’s not a must for me.

Interviewer: Anyway, do you read news or see what’s going on in the world or around you before you start work?

Guest: No, not really. I even try to avoid phone calls and minimize the time I spend on checking emails. Interviewer: Wow, surprising! What about exercise? Do you work out every day?

Guest: Well, frankly speaking, although I am a martial artist and have tried taekwondo, karate, judo and ju jitsu, I’m not a big fan of exercising at all. I mean, I wouldn’t exercise if I didn’t have to.

Interviewer: So, you mean you have no fixed work-out routine?

Guest: Exactly, I only lift weights on my own and whenever I can. I may also run on the treadmill only if there’s anything nice I can watch on TV at the same time.

Interviewer: I see, so you start work right after your morning coffee, am I right?

Guest: Yes, right. I start work as soon as I reach my office.

    I get up at 7:00 a.m. I take a shower. I have my coffee.

Do you eat breakfast? Do you read news و غیره.

Interviewer: I hear you work 80 hours a week. Is that so?

Guest: Absolutely. I’m a firm believer of hard work. There have been times when I worked 120 hours a week and I think if you want to change the world everyone should work over 80 hours a week.

Interviewer: Woww....I’m stunned actually. But how do you make it? I mean such a busy schedule and all that. How do you manage your time?

Guest: I work in 5-minute blocks. I mean, I break my tasks and I do them in 5-minute blocks and cover them one at a time.

Interviewer: That’s very clever. So, your tasks become more manageable and you can save more time. Guest: Exactly.

I’m a firm believer I’m a firm believer

اصطلاح اول keep in shape اصطلاح دوم regular meal

Interviewer: You said breakfast is optional for you, how about lunch and dinner. I hope they’re not optional too[laughingly and surprised]?

Guest: I may skip my lunch and have a 5-minute break for lunch but dinner is the only regular meal I have.

Interviewer: Oh, so you may go one meal a day only and on that busy schedule? You’re really something! [laughingly]

Guest: Well, that’s me! If there was a way I could not eat and work instead, I would be very happy but...

Interviewer: That’s too much I guess, isn’t it? But since we are on the topic, you said you don’t like working out. Do you try to eat healthy to keep in shape?

Guest: Well, when it comes to food, I prefer to eat tasty food and die earlier than healthy food and live longer. I think that says it all!

Interviewer: Oh, my goodness....I can’t believe you’re the one saying this! I know your mother used to be a registered dietitian. So how come?

Guest: Well yeah, I hope she won’t be listening to this podcast! [laughingly]

Interviewer: Ok, we won’t tell her, don’t worry [laughingly]. But I’m kind of scared to ask my next question. What about sleeping? What time do you go to bed? Don’t tell me you don’t like sleeping! Guest: Well, as I said earlier, I always make sure I have at least 6 hours of sleep. But there are times when I work over 80 hours in a week with not much time to sleep. Nevertheless, I do believe the quality of your sleep can improve the quality of your work and life.

    Interviewer: Phew...I’m relieved [laughingly].

Ok, as my last question, what is one piece of advice you’d give our listeners?

Guest: I’d say If something is important enough, you should try it- even if the probable outcome is failure!

Interviewer: Wonderful advice to conclude our interview with. Thank you very much again for joining us today and hope we can learn from your example of hard work and make good changes in the world. Guest: Oh, thank you for inviting me and I believe together we can make the world a better place!

[Bg music] So, back to you, dear listeners. You listened to an interview with a famous character, prominent figure, business investor, CEO and product architect at Tesla based on the daily routines which are actually true about him, can you guess who it was?

    [music]
