Rev. Mr. Benjamin Boardman

Rev. Benjamin Boardman is Chaplain to Durkee’s Regiment.—His Diary. 

Benjamin Boardman (1731-1802) was born at Glastonbury, Connecticut to Edward and Dorothy (Smith) Boardman. He graduated from Yale College in 1758 and was tutor there in 1760. In 1762 he was settled as pastor in Middle Haddam, Connecticut and remained there until 1783. He married Ann (Johnson), widow of Stephen Hosmer. Jr. Boardman served as a chaplain in the Revolutionary War. He was with Captain Comfort Sage’s Troop of Horse from Middletown at the Lexington alarm, and was present at the Boston siege, 1775. He was chaplain of Colonel Durkee’s Connecticut regiment in Washington’s army in 1776. He was installed as the pastor of the Second Church of Christ in Hartford, Connecticut in 1784. WILLIAM McKAY TENNENT.

Uncertainty as to his Identity with the subject of the Following Sketch.— Patriotic Sermon delivered before the Troops at Ticonderoga.—His Career after the War.—His Death.

William McKay Tennent was born in 1741. He grew up with New Side influences directing his education at home before he entered the College of New Jersey (Princeton University). The College of New Jersey continued the New Side education provided by the Log College. He graduated at the college of New Jersey in 1763, and was ordained to preach in 1772. He married the daughter of Dr. Rodgers, of New York, a distinguished patriot, and a chaplain in the army, and was settled in Greenfield, Connecticut. He was a man of polished manners, and distinguished for his amiability of temper and generous hospitality.

This is the excerpt of a sermon ‘Delivered at the head of Cols. Mott’s and Swift’s regiments when under arms, expecting the approach of the enemy hourly, at Mount Independence, Sunday, October 20th, 1776.

This week I have you look into the mirrors of history with a focus on 1782. At this time we can see the parallels of economic turmoil, increased luxuries for the wealthy, control by large corporations by using foreign imports over local manufacturing. We also see the envy of the general population looking at the elite. Worse, we see the demise of morality, Foundational Christian principles, common courtesy as well as the harm of Constitutionalism by the suffrage (the votes) of the people.

Compounding this is the generational shift after the war to the influence unitarian/universalist theology or, the lack of Reformation theology and the slow rot beginning of the progressive equity gospel.

Our present began in 1782.

Now as an obscure historian, I will reveal a new nugget. The deep rooted reason the Anti-federalists argued against the Constitution of 1787.

This week is a short followup from last week as I ask ‘What is the Source of Provision’ in our lives? In this time of economic upheaval, the echo chambers all look to the government to provide solutions. Really? The founding era had comparable and worse economic maladies but they had strong pulpit leaderships that looked to the true source of provision.

The majority of this program is a blast from the past. With this being Easter week I was looking for an easy way by doing a program rerun. Well, for technical reasons, I could not get a 2015 program to meet the sound quality I wanted therefore, this is a fresh program. Not only did I want to emphasize the ‘Source of Provision’ but also the historical prophetic writing of ‘Brutus Anti-federalist Revisited.’ Robert Yates, Brutus, argues against the Federal Constitution with this simple thought in mind:

‘But if, on the other hand, this form of government contains principles that will lead to the subversion of liberty — if it tends to establish a despotism, or, what is worse, a tyrannic aristocracy; then, if you adopt it, this only remaining assylum for liberty will be shut up, and posterity will execrate (feel or express great loathing for) your memory.’

Brutus No. 1 is revisited in this program and I do hope that we take note of the warnings such that we have courage to act so as to secure Liberty over economy by first understanding the Source of Provision in all things.

EIC The Originator of Corporate Subsidies to Net-Zero Corporate Forced Behavior and the Ruble Rules

This program on the ‘EIC the Originator of Corporate Subsidies’ is the beginning of a change in how I will be doing the program blog posts from now on. Instead of writing long paragraphs that often are more than the content of the audio and or video, I am moving to an outline format for the blog post. The audio will remain at the top of each post and the links to the video will remain at the top as well.

With the outline format you can get the basic content of what I am discussing on the program. You will be able look at my program notes seeing the content I prepared to talk about. With that, You can jump to the resources that could be associated to the outline and you will see that there is a lot more content in the outline than I have real time to cover in the 45 minute program.

And as always, Sam Adams Wisdom will continue in the blog post between the Outline and the References. For this week, Sam hits it hard regarding the Sovereignty of God and our dependence on Him in his August 1st speech regarding the Declaration of Independence. We need, we must grasp this truth and return to it (period).

For this week I want to emphasize two points regarding the Outline and what is on the actual program.

First is the program title component ‘the Ruble Rules.’ I will follow up on this for next week but, You really need to read the associated article because our monetary system is at a critical point. This could be a mechanism that makes inflation look like a gift if the US dollar is forced into deflation. Here is the quick link to the Ruble article.

Second is ending the program way to quickly with the Lords Prayer. I will discuss this further on next weeks program. What hit me in looking hard at the EIC (East India Company) was that they brought in ‘the Consumer economy’ which Sam Adams looked from the perspective that the lust of the flesh were more easily sought. He was praying and hoping that America would maintain its dependence on the God of the Bible, not on economic frivolity and market manipulations.

John Hurst: From Chaplains and Clergy of the Revolutionary

John Hurst was chaplain to the 4th, 5th and 6th battalions of Virginia troops that served in New Jersey in 1777. He was a fearless man and an ardent patriot, while no one more faithfully discharged his ministerial duties than he. No incidents of his life have come to my knowledge that require a particular notice. The character of the man, however, and the manner in which lie performed the duties of chaplain, may be gathered from the following extracts from a sermon preached by him to the Virginia battalions, April 20th, 1777. The sermon is dedicated to General Stephens—the dedicatory note closing with the following pithy sentence: “For after all the definitions of patriotism that ever was or ever will be given, this is the quintessence of it, the opposing ourselves foremost in the field of battle against the enemies of our country.”

 

The Extravagance, Irreligion, and Universal Depravity of The Age

Am I talking about the 20th and now the 21st centuries in discussing ‘the extravagance, irreligion, and universal depravity of the age?’ If you have any inkling of a Foundational Biblical worldview, I believe that you would agree that irreligion and universal depravity of the age are militant, scandalous and, if you are a moral person, would say outrageously taboo. On this program I talk about why those who should be the guardians of Liberty, Faith and cultural/civic decency/morality have allowed these encroachments to prevail.

For those who may not listen to the program, the guardians of Liberty fell into the ‘snares, which their artful, insidious Enemies, a few years ago laid for them.’

As always, I do not have the time to take you through all of the details that are the mirrors of history related to our present time. I am going through the letter that Sam wrote to John Scollay in some detail. I also am making a quick comparative of Sam’s ability to live the full perspective of his Puritanism by taking you on a quick dive into Proverbs and Galatians Chapter 5.

I wanted to discuss the Character of Samuel Adams and his political theory on Constitutional Republicanism as observed and memorialized by the Marquis De Chastellux in his ‘Travels in North-America, in the years 1780-81-82’ De Chastellux makes this observation of Mr. Adams on pages 389 – 390,

‘In him, I saw a man wrapt up in his object, who never spoke but to give a good opinion of his cause, and a high idea of his country. His simple and frugal exterior, seemed intended as a contrast with the energy and extent of his ideas, which were wholly turned towards the republic, and lost nothing of their warmth by being expressed with method and precision; as an army, marching towards the enemy, bas not a less determined air for observing the laws of tactics. Amongst many facts be cited in honour of his country, I shall relate one which merits to be transmitted to posterity. Two young soldiers bad deserted from the army, and returned to their father’s house. Their father, incensed at this action, loaded them with irons, and conducted them himself to their General, Lord Stirling. He did what every other officer would have done, in his place—pardoned them. The father, a.s patriotic, but less austere than a Roman, was happy to preserve his children; nevertheless he seemed astonished,

From the Life and Public Service of Samuel Adams – 1778 regarding his daughter’s education:

‘Some of the letters of Samuel Adams from Philadelphia, towards the close of 1778, especially the familiar ones to his family, illustrate the character of the man better than the most elaborate descriptions. They lift the veil and give an insight into the undisguised sentiments of his heart, as he might unbosom them in the confidence of his home. Those to his wife and daughter are full of affectionate solicitude for their happiness, and show that the name of tender father and husband, which his daughter delighted to use when describing him to her children, was well merited. His wife he usually addressed as ” my dear Betty,” and to her he often confided the more particular matters relating to his political associations, relying on her discreet good sense to communicate with his intimate friends who might visit the house. His social relationship with his daughter, whose education he had personally conducted, and whose devoted love never failed him to his dying day, appears in some of these letters.’

1781 in a letter to John Adams –

‘…The Academy of Arts and Sciences is in a flourishing way. A new society is incorporated by the name of the Medical Society; and this metropolis has lately appointed a committee to consider the present management of the schools, and report what further improvements may be made, in which the better education of female children is designed to be comprehended. All these things, I hope, are pleasing to you. Our people treat foreigners of merit who come among them with good humor and civility, being desirous of adopting the virtuous manners of others and engrafting them into our stock. Laudable examples on their side and ours will be productive of mutual benefit. Indeed, men of influence must form the manners of the people. They can operate more towards cultivating the principles and fixing the habits of virtue than all the force of laws. This I think is verified by the experience of the world, and should induce the people who exercise the right of electing their own rulers to be circumspect in making their choice. You are well enough acquainted with the character of our first magistrate, to judge what effect his influence may have upon manners.’

Christianity in Corporatism?

Is there Christianity in Corporatism? I am using the broad definition of Corporatism here: ‘the control of a state or organization by large interest groups.’ Can Christianity be the active morality in state or organizational, including corporate business, ethics? Who is determining business ethics at the corporate level and at the small/medium business level? What about the responsibility of every person who is in leadership or management? Are you not, by the classical definition, a magistrate? That being true, Are you not responsible before God for the moral determination of all persons and ethical decisions that are in your managerial realm?

Therefore, is it not true that the elected, the bureaucrats, corporate executives and managers, business owners, middle managers and so on, have a responsibility to uphold true and faithful righteousness and morality (period).

This week I don’t hold back the full charge of Reformed Biblical truth regarding ‘taking the Kingdom by storm’. I take us through a quick survey of Foundational ethics and morality in governance, be it a governing entity, educational system or business related to economy as well as liberty. My Foundational references are, of course Samuel Adams, but I also look at a couple of the other founders and pastors that influenced the American Puritan work ethic.

I am hitting it hard from the work by Thomas Watson, ‘The Christian Soldier Or Heaven Taken By Storm.’ Grab the saddle horn because Watson shakes the very core of your being with truth. If this does not affect how you will be a leader in your family, work and even in the executive/corporate wheelhouse, then you are allowing the present evil.

Watson Not Sherlock’s Dr.

I was reading a book written by a modern Reformed minded pastor, ‘Against The Church,’ that called my attention back to Thomas Watson.

I dug back into my Reformer / Puritan library on Watson and the book ‘The Christian Soldier, or Heaven Taken By Storm, shewing the Holy Violence a Christian is to Put Forth in the Pursuit After Glory’ jumped out as appropriate for this week. It is quit a read at 225 pages but the application of truth is formidable for our present time.

Let me begin with with a quote from ‘The Publisher’s Preface’ regarding Thomas Watson and this particular work.

‘In this little work, it is readily confessed, that there are some expressions, which may be construed to manifest a particular enmity to a certain sect. If any should think so, let them remember the words of the Apostles, Acts v. 29. We ought to obey God rather than man; and like the apostles, our author’s care seems to have been, to set the fear of his Creator constantly before him; and in what he delivered from the pulpit, or issued from the press, to be much more anxious to gain over souls to the kingdom of Heaven,

Twisted Sisters Russia and US

I’m not talking about the 80’s heavy metal ‘Twisted Sister,’ although their song ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ would be applicable lyrics for a lot of conservative activism at this time. My discussion of the Twisted Sisters Russia and US is the cultural hegemony of Antonio Gramsci, which has been mostly fulfilled in all the US.

I am going to take a wide swipe at the ideological Twisted Sisters Russia and US. Initially I was including China but that is to wide of a swipe for today and will have to be picked up another time.

Now a few years ago I heard a major nationally renowned N. E. Ohio pastor once say that ‘communism is dead’ so there is no reason for Christians to be political activists and everyone should focus on ‘the Bible only.’ I have no clue what he says now since I no longer attend that fellowship or bother to listen to him on any of his digital media. My retort to anyone that says ‘communism is dead’ is – they are naive or they are just plain ignorant of their surroundings or worse, they are responsible for participating in the cultural hegemonic agenda and ideologies of the Twisted Sisters.

Experts Everywhere

I will not claim to be an expert in the Ukrainian debacle. Yet I will claim that I have been a student of Marxism and Gramsci-ism since the late 60’s with in-depth study since the mid-80’s. So I will inject some of that into this program. But I still do not claim some title of deep Sino-Russian analytics that makes me one of those has-beens who are gushing a stream of babble, you know, an ex-spurt. There are the growing list of virtuoso’s in modern events. I see and hear a plethora of digital and media pundits, academic pile it high and deeps (Phd’s) as well as every blogger with opinions like the chipmunks scurrying to and fro. I have trusted sources that I will talk about in this program.

What I want to present this week is some expertise from the Founding Era, some deep reasoning Christian critical thinking. I am conveying the details from these sources during this program. The links for these sources are in the references below.

Twisted Sisters Raised by Gramsci’s

Now the Twisted Sisters Russia and US are related through different fathers with the mother being Marxism. Russia is progeny of Lenin where as US, being the United States is a spawned by Gramsci.

I hope the shock factor of US being a Gramsci spawn really hits home. I want to quote from Antonio Gramsci: the Godfather of Cultural Marxism in the references below that substantiates this argument.
