தமிழ் எழுத்துகளில் சீர்திருத்தம் தேவை என்று குரல் எழும்புவதால், அப்படிக் குரல் கொடுப்பவர்களில் ஒருவரான மதன் கார்க்கியை கடந்த வாரம் நேர்கண்டிருந்தோம்.இந்த நேர்காணல் குறித்து சில நேயர்கள் எம்முடன் தொடர்பு கொண்டு, தமிழ் எழுத்துகளில் மாற்றம் எதுவும் தேவையில்லை என்றும் தமிழ் எழுத்துப் பாதுகாப்பியக்கத்தினரின் வாதங்களையும் நாம் ஒலிபரப்ப வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். அந்தவகையில், தமிழ் எழுத்துப் பாதுகாப்பியக்கத்தின் நிலைக்குழு உறுப்பினர் நாக இளங்கோவனின் கருத்துகளை எடுத்துவருகிறார் குலசேகரம் சஞ்சயன்.

Though the call to reform Tamil scripts is gaining momentum again, some advocates against that are adament that no change is required.One such advocate Naga Elangovan is a key member of “Tamil Script Preservation Movement” voices his opinion with Kulasegaram Sanchayan. Naga Elangovan articulates why there is no need for change.

தமிழ் எழுத்தில் சீர்திருத்தம் வேண்டுமென்ற குரல் மீண்டும் வலுப்பெறுகிறது. இந்தியா சுதந்திரம் பெற முன்னரே தந்தை பெரியார் முன்வைத்த எழுத்து சீர்திருத்த யோசனைகளில் சிலவற்றை திரு MGR முதல்வராக இருக்கும் போது நிறைவேற்றி வைத்தார். அப்போது கூட, அதனை சிலர் எதிர்த்தார்கள்.

கணினியிலே தமிழ் பிரபலமாகியிருக்கும் இந்த வேளையிலும், தமிழ் எழுத்துகளில் சீர் திருத்தம் வேண்டுமென்ற குரல் மீண்டும் எழுந்துள்ளது. இதனை முன்னெடுப்பவர்களில் முன்னோடி ஒருவர், மதன்கார்க்கி அவர்கள். இதன் தேவை என்ன, இதனால் என்ன பலன்கள் என்பது குறித்து குலசேகரம் சஞ்சயனுடன் மதன்கார்க்கி பேசுகிறார்.

The call to reform Tamil scripts is gaining momentum again. Prior to Indian independence, E. V. Ramasamy (Periyar) put forward a proposal to reform Tamil scripts. Some of which were implemented when MGR was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, about four decades later. Even then, some Tamils opposed the changes.

Though the use of Tamil in computing is very popular as is, the voice for further reform is on the rise. One of the people leading that call, Madhan Karky talks to Kulasegaram Sanchayan on the need for change.

அப்படியான ஆராய்ச்சியில் ஈடுபட்டிருப்பவர்களில் ஒருவர், குவீன்ஸ்லாந்து பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் பணியாற்றும் முனைவர் சிறீனிவாசன். அவர் தனது ஆராய்ச்சி பற்றியும், பாடாசாலைகளுக்கிடையில் நடைபெறும் Formula One என்ற மோட்டார் வண்டி ஓட்டப் போட்டிக்கு எப்படி உதவி புரிகிறார் என்பது பற்றியும், குலசேகரம் சஞ்சயனுடன் அலசுகிறார்.

Have you ever wondered how bees return to their hives? How do birds know which direction to fly to get to their nests? How do we balance in a moving vehicle? You probably know that there are scientists doing research on these…. but did you know that one of them is a Tamil?

Dr Srini Srinivasan of University of Queensland is one such researcher. Dr Srinivasan talks to Kulasegaram Sanchayan about his research work and how he is helping a team of high school students in a national competition run by Formula One.

Who should you thank for the ability to write in Tamil and share documents on your on a computer, or the mobile phone? Not Bill Gates, nor Steve Jobs.  It is the effort of a few pioneers like Dr Kalyanasundaram that laid the foundation for Tamil in computing.

A resident of Switzerland, Dr Kalyanasundaram continues to involve himself in archiving and digitising Tamil documents and works with computing standards and other institutions to ensure that Tamil keeps up with the work done in other area.

During Dr Kalyanasundaram’s recent visit to Australia, Kulasegaram Sanchayan interviews him on the early work and on what is planned for the future.  The concluding part of this interview will be brought to you in the near future.

An Indonesian judge has adjourned an appeal mounted by lawyers for the two Australians facing the firing squad.

The lawyers went before a state administrative court which had ruled last month that it didn’t have the authority to hear a legal challenge against President Joko Widodo’s refusal to grant the pair a reprieve.

The convicted drug smugglers, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran are among prisoners from several countries that Indonesia wants to execute.

As the legal appeals continue, a delegation of Australian Islamic leaders is in Jakarta making the case for clemency.

Virgin Airlines founder Sir Richard Branson says he wants to speak to Indonesian president Joko Widodo in an effort to save those facing the death penalty in Indonesia.

But as Kulasegaram Sanchayan reports, Mr Abbott is still waiting to hear whether his request to speak again to President Widodo about the fate of the two men will be accepted.

Since retiring from the University of Batticaloa, Professor Maunaguru has started a theatre workshop and is exploring further dimensions of the Tamil theatre.

Last August, Dr Pachaivathy launched a new program titled, “Annai mozhi anbu vazhi” (mother language taught in a loving way). The program encourages youngsters who do not study at structured Tamil language schools to learn Tamil in a fun and creative way.
