சிட்னி, வில்லாவூட் தடுப்பு முகாமிலிருந்து 83 புகலிடக்கோரிக்கையாளர்கள், மேற்கு ஆஸ்திரேலிய Curtin தடுப்பு முகாமிற்கு மாற்றலாகிப் போகிறார்கள்.  ஆஸ்திரேலிய அரசுக்கெதிராக இவர்கள் தொடுத்துள்ள வழக்கு விசாரணைக்கு வர முன் இவர்களைப் பொது மக்களின் பார்வையிலிருந்து அப்புறப்படுத்தும் நோக்குடனேயே, அரசு இவ்வாறு செயற்படுகிறது என்று, புகலிடக் கோரிக்கையாளருக்காகக் குரல் கொடுப்பவர்கள் சொல்கிறார்கள்.

இதே வேளை, ஆஸ்திரேலியாவுடன், பிராந்திய மீள்குடியேற்ற ஏற்பாடு என்ற உடன்படிக்கையில் கையெழுத்திட்டு எட்டரை மாதங்களின் பின் பப்புவா நியூ கினி அரசு, புகலிடக் கோரிக்கையாளர்களுக்கு வீசா வழங்குவது குறித்த மாற்றங்களைக் கொண்டுவந்துள்ளது.

இந்த மாற்றங்கள், சட்டமாக இன்னமும் அங்கீகரிக்கப்படவில்லை.  ஆனால், இந்த மாற்றங்கள் கொண்டுவரப்பட்டு, மானுஸ் தீவிலிருக்கும் ஆஸ்திரேலிய தடுப்பு முகாமிலிருப்பவர்களுக்கு ஜூன் மாதத்திலிருந்து வீசா வழங்கப்படும் என்று அரசு சொல்கிறது.

Advocates have accused the Federal Government of trying to hide 83 asylum seekers from public view by transferring them across the nation a day before their case was due to be heard in court.

The government began (thurs) moving the group from Sydney’s Villawood detention centre to the Curtin centre in Western Australia one day before a court hearing they are bringing against the Commonwealth was to start.

In the meantime, eight and a half months after signing the Regional Resettlement Arrangement the Papua New Guinea government has approved a visa that will allow it to settle refugees.

The visa still needs to be passed into law, but the government says it hopes the first refugees will be resettled from the Australian detention centre on Manus Island in June.

Australia’s 26th Governor General has indicated he plans to play a role in the nation’s public discourse. Upon being sworn in as Governor General, Retired Major General Peter Cosgrove has pledged to serve in a bipartisan manner. Kulasegaram Sanchayan reports in Tamil, a feature by Thea Cowie of SBS News that his first speech in the job suggests he may not be a quiet Governor General.

An Australian-born judge, who now works in Papua New Guinea, is pressing on with his own inquiry into the conditions at the Manus Island immigration detention in the face of attempts by the PNG government to stop him. Justice David Cannings is with PNG’s National Court which is able to conduct investigations independent of government. He’s examining whether the conditions on Manus comply with the human rights standards of the PNG constitution and any other relevant and applicable human rights laws. But the PNG government has accused Justice Cannings of being biased and unsuccessfully tried to convince him to abandon his investigation. Tamils in Australia gathered in Canberra to lobby support for the motion proposed by USA at United Nations Human Rights Council meeting.  Our presenter Kulasegaram Sanchayan reports on the event.

Dr.T. Dr. T S Subbaraman holds a doctorate in Physics and was a former Head of the Physics department at Anna University, Chennai. Though his specialisation is Physics, his heart favours Tamil. He had been passionate about Tamil theatre. He has performed on stage from the age of nine. He has also performed in various TV and radio dramas. He has the credit of making the science show “Maanudam ventradu,” which was aired in All India Radio for three continuous years. In recognition of Dr. Subbaraman’s passion for Tamil, Anna University appointed him as the first Director of the Centre for Development of Tamil in Engineering and Technology in 2001. He has aesthetically explained concepts in Physics through simple and short Tamil prose (venpA).
