The accidental public release of thousands of asylum seekers’ details could have mixed implications for their safety.  The Immigration Department has inadvertently published online the full names, nationalities and boat arrival details of up to 10-thousand asylum seekers. While there are concerns the information could be used against asylum seekers and their families, the information could also increase asylum seekers’ chances of securing refuge. Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey says the federal government is considering the sale of up to 130 billion dollars’ worth of public assets, expected to be announced in the May budget.

He last year flagged likely agreements with the states and territories on what to sell and how in a wide-ranging privatisation program.

And in a speech at the Lowy Institute earlier this year, he said it was time for the private sector to help boost productivity, jobs and economic development.

Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Australia says his country’s civil war has nothing to do with the rest of the world and there’s no need for an independent investigation into allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Logi Mariathasan is a polio survivor, a mother of three and a grand mother of two.  Her ability to fight all odds has made her an ideal candidate to champion for the cause of differently-abled people.  Working with a charity that helps differently-abled people help themselves, recently she dived from the sky, to raise funds and to campaign for the plight of the intellectually challenged in Canada.  Our presenter, Kulasegaram Sanchayan, chats with her on her recent visit to Sydney.

A follower of former prime minister AB Vajpayee, Tarun Vijay made history by speaking in the Rajya Sabha in support of making Tamil a national language, the first member of Parliament ever from north India to make such a demand. In his written and signed statement Tarun Vijay said, “It is the arrogance and the feeling of a self-styled supremacy of some of my fellows in the North that we have not been able to fathom the real glory and importance of one of our greatest languages, i.e., Tamil, its glory and influence can be felt seven seas across, on the waves and caressing the highest peaks of the classical influence, since ages and in all times.” Our presenter, Kulasegaram Sanchayan, reports on his speech in the parliament, why he has proposed that and the potential implications of the proposal, if implemented.

The similarities between the Tamil Harvest festival Pongal and the Japanese Harvest festival (小正月) koshōgatsu has been established by Japanese scholars.  Tamils and the Japanese celebrate these festivals around the same time – mid January.  Both festivals have similar characteristics in purpose and festivities.

Our presenter, Kulasegaram Sanchayan, discusses the history and the current status of these festivals with Dr John G Samuel of Institute of Asian Studies and a Japanese / Tamil scholar, Masakazu Kono.

The Abbott government’s border protection policy is again raising more questions than answers, with reports that boats are being towed back to Indonesia, and conflicting reports about Indonesia’s response.  Asylum seekers say in recent weeks, the Australian Navy attached ropes to two separate boats and towed them back to Indonesia.  But as Thea Cowie of SBS News reports, the Coalition is continuing to say very little about what’s been happening with asylum seeker boats and the use of the nation’s Navy, citing what it describes as ‘operational security reasons’.
