They’re the new eyes in the sky, taking human vision further than ever before.  Remotely piloted aircraft, also known as drones, have become more affordable for hundreds of Australians, and they’re growing in popularity.  Search and rescue operations could be among the areas to benefit from the new technology. Kamahl is an Australian singer of Tamil Heritage. Kamahl is the stage name of Kandiah Kamalesvaran, a Malaysian-born Australian singer and recording artist, perhaps best known for “The Elephant Song”, and his repertoire of popular music.

China is accusing Australia’s Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, of overstepping the mark with her comments on a restricted flying zone over the East China Sea. And East Timor is calling for a response to allegations Australia spied on Timorese leaders during negotiations for a lucrative 2006 resource-sharing treaty. It comes as the Abbott government appears to be smoothing over relations with Indonesia, but is failing to stop tensions from rising with other regional actors. Maps have changed the world over centuries.  Lands have been fought and won, concurred and colonised by the use of maps.

A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analysing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information.  GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualise data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts.

Dr Lalith Kumar is an Associate Professor in Ecosystem Management at UNE, where he teaches GIS and Remote Sensing subjects at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.   Dr Lalith Kumar was a guest speaker at the Australian National Library, which is holding an exhibition of rare and unique cartographic treasures from around the world.

Hidden Kitchens of Sri Lanka is far more than a collection of traditional recipes. It’s author, Bree Hutchins, a Sydney-based photographer and writer began her career as a criminal lawyer. Since 2010, she has been focusing her energy on what she loves most – food and travel.

She seized the opportunity to travel to the island of Sri Lanka and document the work of a local charity. During this trip, the idea for Hidden Kitchens of Sri Lanka was born.

With stunning photographs, stories of ordinary people from all walks of life, and authentic recipes directly from their kitchens, this book is different to other cookbooks.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and U-S Secretary of State John Kerry have remained tight lipped over allegations the two countries colluded to tap the phone of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Meeting in Washington to discuss bilateral operations in a grouping known as AUSMIN (oz-min), Mr Kerry told the press that the United States enjoys an “unbreakable and a critical” working relationship with Australia and that the two would continue to work together on global counter-terrorism activities.

But when pressed on U-S involvement in the Indonesian phone-tapping allegations, both Ms Bishop and Mr Kerry declined to comment.

Dr Britta Hardy has come up with a peptite to help blood vessels grow.  Our producer, Kulasegaram Sanchayan talks to her and finds out that her work in Cancer research has led her to this.  Dr Logan Kanagaratnam, a heart specialist at North Shore Hospital and Ryde Hospital, explains her findings in simple Tamil.

Our producer Kulasegaram Sanchayan talks to Prof Arun Dharmarajan about his recent discovery – a new approach to cure cancer.  Prof Dharmarajan’s discovery has shown positive results in containing cancer and he is getting ready for clinical tests.
