Australian Navy is commemorating the centenary of the first entry of the Royal Australian Navy’s Fleet into Sydney.  On 4 October 1913 the flagship, HMAS Australia, led the new Australian Fleet Unit comprising HMA Ships Melbourne, Sydney, Encounter, Warrego, Parramatta and Yarra into Sydney Harbour for the first time to be greeted by thousands of cheering citizens lining the foreshore. This was a moment of great national pride and importance, one recognised as a key indicator of Australia’s progress towards national maturity.

The Greens still haven’t given up hope of snaring one last Senate seat, and it’s from the Palmer United Party (PUP) in Western Australia.

The declaration of the result in that state has been postponed as the electoral commissioner decides whether to grant an appeal by Greens senator Scott Ludlam and allow a recount.

Senator Ludlam wants a partial recount after a 14-vote difference between micro-parties, the Shooters and Fishers Party and the Australian Christians, handed a third senate seat to the P-U-P.

The Australian Electoral Commission denied the initial request but is now considering an appeal.

But as … reports, whatever the decision, Prime Minister Tony Abbott will almost certainly have to negotiate with the Palmer United Party to pass crucial pieces of legislation.

At number 14, Australia could be considered to be reasonably well-placed on a new index comparing the wellbeing of older people around the world.

But lobbyists for older Australians say if a closer look is taken, it can be easily seen that all is not well for Australia’s seniors.

And they say the nation is under-prepared for looming challenges being brought on by an aging population, including among our migrant communities, who have special needs as they get older.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is preparing to make his first visit to Indonesia since winning government amid a growing diplomatic storm over his policy to turn back asylum seeker boats

Indonesia has repeatedly warned against the policy, which is part of Operation Sovereign Borders, the Coalition’s regional action plan against people smuggling.

In an unusual step Indonesia has ramped up the pressure by issuing a statement warning the policy could jeopardise the relationship between the two nations.
