  • EP 69: India- The Real Mother

    Another story from Himachel Pradesh and the Shimla village area, as gathered by Alice Dracott (Simla Village Tales).

    This story tells the tale of a rich Rajah and his six rich wives and his one poor one. Unable to have kids, he asks a Fakhir to help him. Only his poor wife listens to the instructions and so only she has children, six boys and one girl. The jealous wives bribe the midwife to get rid of the kids any way she can, and so she does three times. Will there ever be justice?

    This time the story comes from ancient Persia. It is the story of a mouse who insults a cat and is killed for his offense. The cat then prays to Allah and promises to reform himself. The mice believe that he has repented and thus bring him gifts to thank him for not eating them anymore. The cat thinks that Allah has blessed him with a feast after fasting. This leads to all out war between the cats and the mice. Who will prevail in the end?

Animals scare away the thieves. Thieves come back and get their butts kicked. And everyone lives happily ever after.

    This is the story of an king who wants to build the perfect church, but he is lacking one thing. When he finally gets the monk to tell him what he is missing, his three sons have to set off to find it. The youngest does the hard work of finding it and bringing it back, only to be stuck in a well by his two older brothers. Will the church ever have the right ingredients?

    The story of a young woman who is left an orphan after her parents pass away. The last thing her mother does for her, is to place a bowl on her head, to hide her beauty from the world. The woman is diligent and works hard, focusing all her energy on being a good person. She is hired into a house to take care of a sick wife, and there, meets the son of the house who falls in love with her. Will she ever lose her odd headpiece?

  • EP 64: Ghana- Three Anansi Tales

    Here are three tales from the West African country of Ghana, traditional to the Akan people.

    The first story tells about the trickster Anansi, who get the great god Nyankupon to rename the stories in Anansi's honor.
    The second story tells of how Anansi wants to keep all of the knowledge in a jar, but finds out that there is still more knowledge out there.
    The third story is of Anansi and his neighbor Nothing. Anansi is poor, but when he borrows Nothing's fine clothes, he is able to trick many women into thinking he is rich. Anansi grows jealous of his neighbor, and kills the man. That is why the children weep for Nothing.

It is not easy to find them, even harder to keep them, and with the help of an evil hearted and somewhat spotted servant, he almost loses everything.
