In the first story, a boy displays the ideals of being a good son and student. In the end he turns out to be a great man. The story illustrates the confusionist ideals of the time. In the second story, a hunter is moved by the bird's generosity and thus gives up hunting. The moral is to take care of one another. No podcast or listener shout out on this one because I recorded it before I started doing that. Enjoy~

These three stories all have Jackal as a main character. Some are too short to be their own story, so I lumped them all together. The stories are: The Jackal and The Wolf; A Jackal and A Wolf; and The Lion, The Jackal, and The Man. From the book South African Folktales by James A Honey. In the first story Jackal is smart, but wolf isn't so lucky. In the second story, Jackal is just mean to wolf. In the third story, Jackal tells Lion that Man is the strongest and Lion sets out to find out.
The music is a traditional wedding dance by the Shaghoken Ensemble from Rwanda.

This is the story of a one of the emperors of China, whose ancestors were Manchu, who was embarrassed because his family did not have a good origin story. So an old woman of the court tells the story of how his ancestor is born from the gods. Fancha lived in Manchuria and after his family was killed he fled south to the Tumen River. When that was was not recorded. There is a lot of overlap with this story from Chinese/Jurchen legend.

These are the second and third stories I have read from the book. The Monkey works for his uncle for a while and gets some pretty cool toys. Wolf and Jackal are a bit jealous and try to steal the magic bow away from him. It all ends in a wild mess in the courtroom. In story two, Tiger has never seen a Ram before and is a bit frightened by the loud animal. When Jackal tries to convince Tiger to eat the Ram, Ram's wife Ewe tells him a trick that will scare away tiger forever.
In this space I am going to start doing podcast recommendations as I love to listen to pods, and you might like the stuff that I listen to too. If you like legends from South Africa, you should check out Legendary Africa hosted by Theshira. She is often reading stories that she has adapted from traditional lore and put her own spin on. Her voice is awesome and I'm sure you will like her stories. She is also on youtube, instagram, and twitter. Find her and say hi.

This is the third installment of the Loss of Friends book in the Panchatantra. In this story the Jackal finds out that not all things that make noise are powerful. At the same time Victor finds out that the awful animal making all of the noise is just a Bull. He decides to play the Bull off of Rusty the Lion King and take advantage of the situation. Rusty feels reassured, but is doesn't completely trust Victor.
