"Attar was the soul, Sanai the two eyes. We walk the road of Sanai and Attar.” In saying this, Rumi acknowledged Hakim Sanai and Attar as his two primary inspirations. Hakim Sanai was a Court poet serving the Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni. When the Sultan decided to attack India, he invited Sanai to join him and write about it. As they left, passing by a walled garden they were mesmerized by the music that came from the other side of the wall. They entered the garden to find Lai Khur, who was known as a mad mystic man. While telling this story, Vasant Swaha mentions not only Hakim Sanai's satori (a sudden state of consciousness) but also brings to light Meher Baba, who experienced a satori as a child when kissed on the forehead by an enlightened woman.

“In search of my love, I will go over mountains and strands; I will gather no flowers, I will fear no wild beasts.”
Arrested and tortured for his beliefs, during his time in prison Saint John of the Cross experienced a spiritual awakening. The Spanish carmelite friar and Christian mystic outpoured his words of encouragement and longing for union with God in mystical poetry and writings. He died in the late-sixteenth century and was canonized in 1726. Considered one the most important poets in Spanish literature, his works have been widely translated. After having talked about “The Dark Night of the Soul”, Vasant Swaha now shares his reading of “The Spiritual Canticle of the Soul and Bridegroom”, also written during Saint John’s time of imprisonment. In these verses – words of transformation – the Christian Mystic expresses the fearlessness of his heart in merging with the Beloved. He is focused on Love and returning home, into the experience of no separation, of Oneness with God.

Recently, Vasant Swaha shared his reading of “The Dark Night of the Soul”, one of the most famous poems by Saint John of the Cross. In his talk, the Master expresses how this is an expression used by mystics meaning the process of going through inner darkness while finding the way back to meet with the Maker. It is a twilight zone, a purgatory, or the “happy chance” which every human being is given while letting go of the old and welcoming a whole new life, realizing their true Self, free from the identification with the body, with the mind.

Stepping out of your comfort zone might make you feel a bit lost and restless. But those sentiments can contribute to your self-knowledge. Swaha talks about how exploring new places can help us let go of the old and, accordingly, feel more relaxed. All it takes is to live the moment and take risks, embracing the unknown as a learning opportunity that will lead to growth. As the Master puts it, there are two ways of being in the world. And he suggests that we all choose the non-doing way, spending more time just being, instead of rushing and missing the essence of life.

A disciple writes sharing how distracted and not wholeheartedly dedicated to the path she has been. Swaha addresses her restlessness by reflecting on the art of being oneself while living in this world. That takes preparing oneself with patience and receptivity in an effort to simply be quiet and listen, so that one’s own silence becomes their guide. Drop the unnecessary things while focusing on meditation and Love. Although being two different paths, both meet at the end, in a celebration of one’s marriage to oneself. Reading a poem by Indian mystic poet and saint Kabir, Swaha reminds us that liberation is here and now, while we are alive.
“It is the spirit of the quest that heals you,” the poet says.

A disciple shares with Swaha her experience of spontaneous visions, such as seeing Osho in the temple, right after Satsang. She felt as if she had been around Jesus. Some people have clearer senses, Swaha tells her. And from his own experience he shares his understanding of this cozy familiar feeling of beingness, which is a timeless connection with the Master, always present inside each one of us. By resting in that cozy familiar feeling and surrendering, sensitivity always helps. Reading a letter written by Osho, Swaha then expresses the urgency of breaking free: “But you have to put your whole being at stake – nothing less will do. Hold back a bit and you will miss.” There is no tomorrow, you shouldn’t wait.
