What David and Saul discuss in this episode:

  • Children have a keen way of helping you see the world through a new lens.
  • Saul offers his perspective on life and death. There's an old piece of Jewish wisdom that says if you have the choice to go to a wedding or a funeral, go to the funeral. Why? When you go to a funeral there's an unconscious awareness that each person will go through that someday that's going to be me. Some day we are all going to die. When we leave the funeral we have the potential we have tendency to embrace life even more. The closer we come to death, the more we choose to live.
  • Do you want the pain of regret or the pain of becoming a better human being?
  • David offers his perspective on giving reverence to someone's intellectual property that has been left behind when they leave the world.
  • "I don't care what you do, what you make, what you drive. I do care about who you are."
  • It is critical to treat everyone with the utmost respect and kindness regardless of their status, job title, or otherwise.
  • We're not human beings. We're human becomings. Children have a vision of what they want to accomplish. They don't live in reality they don't live in cynicism. Children are a blank slate with a red crayon. They make a mark.
  • Saul remembers seeing ET as a kid and wanting to be a director. Watching that movie changed the trajectory of his life. Saul recalls going to the library and getting books all about cameras and equipment and storyboarding. He invested every waking moment into learning what is now his craft.
  • Every step of the way, Saul was confronted by his shoulder angel and shoulder demon. Each of us has them. How often do we allow other people to define how we feel about ourselves?
  • One person's hell is another person's heaven. David believes that each of us has something innate in us that allows us to create something.
