The dome of St Peter's Basilica in Rome is not only an architectural marvel but also represents the birth of modern engineering practices.

The dome may not have survived if it wasn't for the intervention of a tenacious pope and three mathematicians. It is a story recounted in a new book Saving Michelangelo's Dome by University of California academic and engineer Wayne Kalayjian.
